Untitled by Mark Reimer Via Flickr: Sleeping outside! The temperature bottomed out at -14C. It was so humid outside so it felt a bit colder. When we woke up, there was frost hanging from all the branches. This is a new take on my winter sleeping setup: - Against the snow is the ground sheet from my Big Agnes Fly Creek Platinum 2 tent. It's stupid light and keeps the moisture away. - Next is a Thermarest Z-lite SOL foam pad. This is new to me. It really boosts the insulation from the cold ground, and weighs almost nothing. - On top of that is a Thermarest ProLite air mattress. For that plush comfort :) - Then it's a North Face synthetic -30C mummy bag. It's very large, but I guess that's what you get when you don't have down. - Last is the ultralite rain fly from the same tent. That was just to minimize the frost buildup overnight. And maybe it added some warmth, not really sure. Probably could have left that at home. I slid off the mattress halfway through the night and woke up with really cold feet. Once I was back on, I warmed up but never regained all the warmth I had earlier. I think I need to add some kind of warm booties for nights like this. Wool socks just aren't enough.
