AU where Arthur finds out about the prophecy and pieces together that "his closest ally Emrys" must be Merlin because who else would it be, but incorrectly assumes that Merlin doesn't know and therefore has never practiced magic before.
Even better if he finds out early season 1 so He's just so devastated the entire time and he's just like "I can't believe this, this prophecy is going to turn my best friend into a sorcerer, and it's all my fault for being the once and future king" and Merlin's in the back just murdering a sidhe

Arthur rolled his eyes slightly. “I was going for a swim,” he replied, “you simply decided to follow me.”

“Pretty, as they always are,” said Arthur.
It was a truthful answer, which he hoped Gwaine wouldn’t probe him too deeply on. If it had been someone else, he would have tried to summon up more enthusiasm. He hoped, however, that Gwaine was bright enough to realise the circumstances Arthur found himself in by now.
“Well, let me know if you ever have your eye on anyone, and I’ll be sure to steer clear to give you the best chance.”
Arthur scoffed, his pride ruffled.
“As if I couldn’t have any woman I wanted,” he groused.
He was not about to let Gwaine think he would ever consider him as a rival.
“Ah, well, that’s the problem right there, isn’t it. You never seem to want one, Arthur.”
Imagine some guy overheard at the tavern that Arthur has a favorite manservant and like, plans to impersonate Merlin in order to kill Arthur.
He's like: if the King likes him so much, he must be the most efficient, kind, proactive servant to ever exist. Then he magically turns into Merlin, assumes Merlin's identity and tries to take over.
Attempt: poison the king.
Arthur: Merlin... What are you doing?
Imposter: Bringing you breakfast, Sire.
Arthur: *looking at large variety of food*... All that?
Imposter: Does this not please you, my Lord?
Arthur: is this... Is this revenge because I knocked you over at training the other day?
Imposter: no? Your majesty, I assure you-
Arthur: are you mad at me?
The imposter lasts for about 10 minutes until the real Merlin, supposed knocked out but of course fine because he's Emrys, walks back into the room.
Merlin: You're gonna eat all that? Don't you think you're fat enough?
Imposter: *blanches*
Arthur: *visibly relieved* Merlin, you're back!
Merlin: ... Arthur, I think you traumatised the assassin.
Arthur: it's not my fault! He did a shoddy job at impersonating you!
