Florence and the Machine - Shake It Out
lilvbishop:
there were a lot of people crammed together in the same space, was the first thought that entered lily’s mind as they stood leaning against the wall, waiting for tino to come back. they tried to not look too out of place, even though it had only been a few months since they last sat foot inside the four walls of the stone harbor high school. everyone was chatting around them, and lily tried to find someone in the mass of people that would make them feel a bit more at ease. their face brightened when they saw someone who never failed to make them feel better, and after making sure they had their phone with them, they approached slowly.
“hi, marley,” lily said softly, voice almost getting lost in the sea of noise coming from all sides. “i never thought the storm would be this bad. i hope everyone’s okay.” loud thunder could be heard just as they said it. lily pushed down a shiver and held onto the edge of tino’s hoodie. it would probably count as their hoodie now, since lily had begun wearing it ever since they moved in with him. “how are you?” they continued. “we haven’t spoken in a while. if you’re not terribly busy i was wondering if maybe i could ask you for some help.” ( @marleyhq )
marley expected her her last days in stone harbor high to be the last time she had to step foot into the place, especially after moving back to new york. but as fate should have it, marley found herself back in the small town where nearly everyone knew one another. she missed that kind of familiarity. new york city was amazing, and marley seemingly fit right in but by any means, she was a close-knit family kind of girl. and that’s exactly what she had here. there’s a magazine atop her lap as she lays back as comfortably as the bleachers will allow. it isn’t until there’s a quiet, yet familiar voice that she’s tearing her concentration from the glossy pages. “lily!” the realization of who the voice belonged to evidently brightens the brunettes mood. her gaze shifts to the other, watching as they cling to the oversized sweater that hugged their frame. “so do i. i heard it’s nothing out there compared to what’s going on around the world, but i guess it’s just enough rain and wind to keep us locked up here.” she’s offering lily a smile as she closes the magazine on her lap. “i’ve been pretty good aside from the whole lockdown thing. how about you? how are things with tino?” she feels annoying asking one question after another, but they weren’t wrong when they said the two hadn’t spoken in a while. “is that his sweater? it’s just the best, isn’t it?” she can recall from her own experience with zander and even harry, wearing their clothing that was a few sizes too big. marley couldn’t tell whether it was the warmth, the scent, or just knowing it belonged to someone they cared about that made them so fun to wear. “you can ask me anything, angel. what’s on your mind?”
wcndychoi:
wendy, who had been eyeing the commotion going on all around her, didn’t react at first when marley started talking. it was only when she felt the insistent tugging on her arm that she finally let her gaze fall on the younger woman. she listened carefully before raising her hand. “stop,” wendy said, interrupting what seemed to develop into a full on begging session. “you had me at ‘drama’ where is this magical place?” instead of letting herself get tugged along she grabbed marley’s hand and dragged her through the nearest exit. “suggesting the fact that i would turn down my very own dress-up montage. shame on you marley valentine.”
it was so crazy to marley that she and wendy must’ve thought and functioned on the same brainwave. the two were constantly thinking exactly what the other was, always down for a little mischief here and there. “shame, shame!” her tone is sing-song as she’s being dragged out of the gym. “just down the hall, that’s the auditorium.” her head nods forward toward the double doors at the end of the hallway. “behind the stage there’s racks and racks of these beautiful costumes. i should know, my dad donated a bunch of them when i did theater way back when.” she offers the other a bright smile as she presses the doors open, tugging wendy and her own frame through it. “woah,” marley was no stranger to the auditorium, more importantly, the stage - but seeing it empty like this after so many years was a bit odd. “what are you gonna look for? there’s this stunning princess gown back there. i hope they kept it after all these years.” her words are hopeful as she’s tugging the other up the steps of the stage. “do you have stage fright?” she asks, brows raising as they step toward the middle of it.
minajvng:
mina, who had been quietly dozing on and off as marley had gently been playing with her hair, slowly opened her eyes when she felt a pair of lips touching her forehead. “koala bear,” she mumbled, voice raspy from not being used for what felt like hours, a small smile stretching across her lips. “you’re gonna make me get up? after trying to sedate me with ur hands for the past hour?” still, she started getting off the floor, grabbing her phone and extending her hand to help marley get up. “well, what are we waiting for?”
there’s a fit of laughter that is leaving the girl as the other seems to shake from her nearly asleep state. marley didn’t want to bother mina, but she was beginning to feel restless. she either needed to go off on a walk or a large bag of skittles in order to keep herself semi-functioning throughout however long they’d be locked in. reaching for the others’ hand, marley pulls herself up to her feet, adjusting the skirt around her hips as she does so. she’s keeping in grip on the others’ hand to interlock their fingers, swinging their hands absentmindedly. “being here is so weird, isn’t it?” she comments, azure hues taking in the decor of the gymnasium that hadn’t seemed to change much since marley attended stone high. pushing open the large door that lead into the hallway, she’s exhaling in a sigh. “it’s bittersweet. i... have a lot of great memories here, with you, with indi and zander. after i left i didn’t think i’d miss this place but... i guess i kinda do, in a way?” she knows that if anyone will tolerate her ramblings, it’s mina. she breaks the contact between their hands briefly to retrieve a few singles from bag, slipping them into the machine. her fingers work against the buttons to punch in the appropriate code for skittles. “i would’ve loved to graduate alongside everyone, but... i guess it’s too late for that.”the words are said in a tone that is reminiscent instead of regretful. “i was gonna get three packets of skittles, do you want anything else?” she motions vaguely to the machine before them, shelf after shelf littered with colorful snacks.
there’s a knot forming in the pit of her stomach. whether it’s from excitement or nerves is lost to the brunette as she’s shoving open the large door that lead out into the hallway. it was all coming back to her now. there are flashes of memories before her eyes - memories she was sure she shoved deep in the back of her mind. she was no longer the girl who owned the halls with either savas twin at her side, chin held high, not a care in the world. marley wouldn’t dare give up the life she has today, but she couldn’t help but wonder from time to time how things would’ve turned out should her past had been a little different. she can almost hear the lockers slamming shut, the hustle and bustle of students rushing to their next class. the very same set of noises was her soundtrack for nearly three years. though, if marley had anything to say about it, she’d tell you she was far too occupied otherwise to notice such trivial things.
she recalls mornings, breaks between classes, or after the dismissal bell when she’d wait by zander’s locker, helping him pack up and eventually either carpooling to her place or saying their goodbyes amidst the sea of students. they were young but marley doesn’t dare doubt that they weren’t in love. what she felt back then begins to rise up in her, like an uncontrollable tidal wave, making each inch of her body tingle with nostalgia. she remembers it all like it was yesterday. there’s a small sitting area at the end of the hallway that she finds herself gravitating to. this was yet another place the two found themselves after the last bell. it was the same spot they’d hold hands and exchange smitten glances, and the place where marley met his gaze and was positive that she was in love with him. there’s a slight hitch in her breath as she’s seating herself on the bench, azure hues taking in the familiar scenery around her. it isn’t until she’s looking down the hall that she sees him - almost like clockwork. her bottom lip is taken between her teeth briefly as she’s tucking back a strand of hair. “do you remember?” she asks softly, head cocking to one side. / @zanderffs
ofrobbies:
high school hadn’t been robbie’s fondest time, deemed the class clown at best. he wandered aimlessly down the empty halls, reminiscing on the times he’d done the same while classes were still in session. the glory days perhaps, or perhaps just another chapter in the fucked up novel he could never write on his life. he’d always felt misunderstood, mostly by himself. he was rounding the staircase, the same one he’d spent countless days getting high beneath, when he stumbled upon a familiar face. “you found me.” he chuckled, extending his arms as if in surrender. he’d always had a soft spot for the female, an unexplained desire to keep her safe and out of harm’s way. he’d recalled countless talks in high school, blowing off steam about the chaos surrounding them in the moment. “what’s up shortstack?” he teased, oddly at ease despite the storm brewing outside. he was in his element, chaos, though truthfully already stoned out his mind as bloodshot eyes glanced over at the other.
there’s an inexplicable solace that marley feels in the others’ presence. she wasn’t sure exactly what it was of the mysterious boy that made her feel safe, but she was grateful of that fact nonetheless. she recalls back to the moment she and robbie’s relationship turned into what it was. she and indigo had just found out that she was pregnant, and although she hadn’t shared the news with anyone else, she put on a brave face when attending the next big party in order to keep up with appearances. truthfully, marley was terrified. she didn’t know who to tell or how to tell them, she felt disappointed in herself for letting such a thing happen. she was scared to tell zander, she was scared to tell her father. her mind wouldn’t shut off, eating at her until she inevitably exploded in a fit of tears against the others’ chest. he didn’t pry, didn’t ask her to explain herself. instead robbie was there for her. she’ll never be able to thank him for that. “i was wondering if you had anything on you that might take the edge off of my anxiety. this stupid storm has me on edge. never been a fan.” she keeps her wording brief, knowing robbie will most likely just nod and go along with what she’s saying. she appreciates his lax behavior, as it shows sharp contrast to her own most of the time.
with the others’ head in her lap, fingers gently combing through long brown tresses, marley seemingly loses herself in the hustle and bustle. there’s a moment where her hands stop their movements, instead reaching to cover her mouth in a yawn. “min,” she mumbles tiredly, leaning forward to press her lips against the others’ forehead. “i’m seriously lacking any kind of energy right now. let’s get some skittles, on me?” her head cocks to one side, azure hues bright and eager. / @minajvng
being confined in the walls of her alma mater made marley feel nostalgic. there wasn’t a time she didn’t strut down the halls as if she owned the place. it’s weird to think that how different she was from then compared to now. she chews on her bottom lip as she watches the busy event coordinators bounce around from group to group, making sure everyone okay despite the blackout. “wennie,” she whines - somewhat of a marley valentine staple - as she begins to teasingly tug at the others’ arm. “there’s a whole drama department full of costumes just begging to be tried on. come and be my partner in crime?” / @wcndychoi
the lights had gone out and to say marley was spooked was an understatement. storms were never her strong suit. many of her friends enjoyed the rain, telling the brunette about the calming effects the sound of it all had on them. for marley, storms meant chaos. they meant loud crashes of thunder, dark hallways, and small feet padding against the hardwood floors of their apartment as she’d sprint towards her fathers room. there was nothing calm about the rumbling of walls to marley. wandering around the high school, she can’t help but feel nostalgia in the pit of her stomach. there were so many amazing memories shared here. from being inseparable with zander, ruling the halls with indigo, and keeping her friend group from killing one another, it all came flowing back as she wanders the halls. she was looking for someone in particular, though she wasn’t surprised to find robbie lingering elsewhere while everyone lost their minds in the gymnasium. “just the man i was looking for.” the brunette is offering a sweet smile as she stops in her tracks, head cocking to one side. / @ofrobbies
