Sometimes I hear songs playing that I used to absolutely belt into my hairbrush as a kid, and I have to stop and think to myself...our parents really just let us listen to anything, didn't they? I mean...they were definitely not supervising us lol. I Wanna Love You Forever came on while I was driving home today, and somehow I still knew every single word. Every. Single. Word. I think I was maybe twelve years old when that song came out? And I had absolutely no business belting out things like "pour yourself all over me" and "cherish every drop here on my knees" with so much enthusiasm. So now I'm curious. What's a song you loved as a kid that you absolutely had no business singing? Because I know I'm not the only one who was singing things I absolutely should not have been singing.

Dude! That's so awesome! Consider the kid version of me super jealous. It would have been so damn cool to have one of my teachers do a whole Star Wars week for my class, so I hope all those tiny Jedi are firmly calling you their favorite teacher now. I definitely would be.

I didn't organize anything, sunshine. You know how kids are. They saw the duel between Luke and Vader, found some sticks and BAM! Lightsaber duels on the playground, and me trying to split the kids up when it just explodes into a genuine fight.

Hobby - what hobbies do you have or want to get into?

I’ve always loved music, obviously anybody who knows me knows that — songwriting, piano, making playlists for literally every mood imaginable and cycling through them all in a twenty minute time span because I can't pick what I want to listen to because they're all so good. I read a lot too. Since having coming home, I've had a lot more time to catch up on my reading so I'm making a slight dent in my TBR list. And lately I’ve been trying to get back into gardening without accidentally killing everything in sight; I don't know how successful I've been, but like I tell my students — you'll never know if you don't try. I think I’d also like to get better at photography someday. Nothing super professional, just capturing the little moments in life before they're gone. The kind you don’t realize you’ll miss until later.

Since we're near the end of the year and don't have much left, I decided to do a Star Wars Week with my class — showing movies on the 4th, 5th, and the 6th. Episode IV: wonder and excitement Episode V: lightsaber duels at recess Episode VI: officially lost control of my classroom I started this just thinking it would be a fun, low-key thing for the end of the school year. Instead, I now have a room full of tiny Jedi, one very passionate Sith Lord, and at least six kids making “woosh woosh” noises at all times. I regret nothing.

I was talking about research for essays today and mentioned how we used to rely on encyclopedias and actual library cards...cue the blank stares. One kid asked, “You mean, you couldn't just google it?” I almost laughed out loud. Explaining that you had to physically pull books off shelves and write down citations by hand felt like a full-on history lecture. Honestly, I didn’t even have it in me to try and explain the card catalog system too. It’s wild realizing some of these kids have no idea what research looked like to all of us growing up.

See, this would be the perfect opportunity to teach your kids about genuine research, though. Especially if you have the older kids. Give them an essay, but make it a requirement that they research like we used to. Make them go analog; heck you could even make it extra credit if they write it by hand or use a typewriter or something like that. Make the assignment research on the card catalogues or development of encyclopedias or even how research has evolved over time.

The history of it all — that’s incredible. I feel like I’d want to go just to understand it better. Marley: ...but also, absolutely NOT alone. Because the second it gets too quiet down there, I WILL start convincing myself something is watching me and that’s how I end up running back towards the stairs like my life depends on it. I think you'd be a great judge! Would that make your work load heavier or a bit lighter? I figure it would make it a bit lighter since you wouldn't have to be prepping cases and stuff like that. You just spend your whole day listening to people argue their own cases. Or is there more to it? What kind of cases would you be taking if you got the seat?

Honestly, it’s been good—quieter than NYC, that’s for sure, but there’s a certain charm to it once you start noticing the little things. People seem friendly enough, too, which is a nice change of pace. How about you—are you settling back in okay, or still figuring out what’s new?

Oh yeah, Ashford Valley is bound to be a lot quieter than a big city like New York. I moved to Los Angeles after high school, and it was such an adjustment. Everything just felt louder, faster, bigger even. Like the city never really stopped moving; it didn't really seem like anything quieted down until I moved out into one of the suburbs, and even then it wasn't the same as being here. Coming back here’s been strange in the best way though. Familiar, mostly. A few new spots, a few changes, but it still feels like it hasn't really changed too much. I think I’m settling in okay — just relearning the rhythm of things. Hopefully the town has treated you well so far.

See, exactly! By that logic, soup is only allowed when it’s raining and smoothies are banned after 10 a.m. Absolute chaos. And honestly? I would not be mad at custard for breakfast—sounds kind of luxurious, actually. If dairy really has working hours, I’d love to see the schedule, because milk clearly didn’t get the memo about my midnight cravings. And I’m not even arguing cereal is a health choice at that hour, it’s a comfort choice, which feels way more important. So now I’ve gotta ask—what’s your go-to “I forgot to eat like a functional adult” cereal? I feel like that’s very telling.

Comfort absolutely outranks whatever imaginary food rules people invent. Midnight cereal isn’t trying to win a nutrition award, it’s just there to emotionally support you, and frankly that’s a very important job. As for my “forgot to eat like a functional adult” cereal? Cinnamon Toast Crunch, no hesitation. It’s pure nostalgia and chaos in a bowl. Though if I’m pretending to have my life together, I’ll reach for either Strawberry or Honey Nut Cheerios and act like that was the plan all along. What about you?
