I feel like I've been watching the stage recording from the 25th anniversary for so long, even though it's only been out since 2011 ha. The role is for Erik! I've always wanted to play both, honestly, because both roles fall into my vocal range, but I always thought that I would have to play Raoul first. But that was back when I was living in New York, so I didn't think I'd get that call to play the Phantom first. But here we are. And yes, he is entirely problematic, but that's beside the point. That's a point we just sort of ignore because you can't help but love him anyway.

The phantom's name is Erik? Is that in the show or the movie and I just missed it? Totally had no clue, either way. Why would you think you'd have had to play Raoul first, is there some like theater rule or something? You know me, I'm generally clueless unless a show is of interest to me and so far that's been... Phantom, Little Shop of Horrors, Addams Family, Beetlejuice, Sweeney Todd, and Heathers. I think that's all of them. And exactly, I mean he could be worse. He could be Edward Cullen. Okay, now that I think of it, that actually might not be a good comparison because I'm realizing how similar they might be. Oh well, I still stand by it. Mostly because at least the Phantom isn't a whiny baby with his obsession.

First of all, thank you for your service because this is exactly the kind of critical seasonal reporting I need on my timeline. Second of all, AUGUST 22ND??? That's practically tomorrow in Halloween Person Time. I don't care if it's just hiring signs. Spirit Halloween appearing in an empty storefront is one of nature's most beautiful migrations.

Also, if you're serious about the watermelon pumpkin, I need photos immediately. Is it practical? No. Will it probably attract every ant within a five-mile radius? Maybe. But innovation requires sacrifice.

Honestly, the second I start seeing plastic skeletons on shelves, my brain just goes "ah yes, the most wonderful time of the year." Now excuse me while I go check every store in town for spooky merchandise I absolutely do not need.

Happy to be of service, it's always my pleasure to notify of the spooky season beginning. Even if for me it generally never really ends. And honestly, Spirit Halloween taking over random empty storefronts never fails to bring me joy. It's like a seasonal cryptid. You don't see it for months and then suddenly there it is. And you can bet if I end up carving a watermelon, there will be pictures. I hadn't even thought about ants, but I'm sure I can find some repellent. Plus the innards of the melon will be safely stored away for eating once we gut it. Also, now you've got me wondering what the first Halloween purchase of the season is going to be for you, because as enthusiastic as you are about it, I'm willing to bet you have a list of things to specifically keep an eye out for. I already know I've seen these lanterns that may or may not become a part of my year-round decor.

Bro, speedrunning spooky season is the best news I’ve heard all week. I keep seeing Summerween ads for Wayfair too, and honestly? I'm shocked you haven't already decked out your room with it yet. I’m 100% on board with carving watermelons, by the way, that’s such a good idea! We could do like… little ghost faces or tiny pumpkins on them. Or one big scary watermelon king. I’m invested now.

Dude bro, if I didn't have a job I would possibly consider applying just to see the new stuff and the set up for this year's theme early on. Also, Wayfair? Not usually on my radar, especially for spooky stuff. But yes, please let's plan out a weekend or whenever we're both free to do some Summerween carvings. I've also seen them using pineapples, how hard do you think that'd be to do, too? You know, with the spiny parts and all.

Personally still think that scouting the perimeter would count as actively searching, but I've done all that I could and will just support you with whatever you choose to do. So, good news. I was scrolling and wasn’t really paying attention so I almost missed it, but I suddenly thought, wait was that Jack the Reaper? I scrolled back and sure enough, someone posted that they spotted Spirit Halloween signs going up already. It’s just the we’re hiring ones so far, but I also saw a comment saying they’re planning to start opening stores August 22nd. Plus apparently some places already have Summerween stuff, and now I really want to get a watermelon just to carve it like a pumpkin. It’s the little things, really.

Okay, I know I say this a lot, but I'm telling you, there is something absolutely massive nesting out in the woods. Found these broken branches that no normal deer or bear could've touched unless they skipped leg day and went straight for arms. Anyone free to hike out there and see if we can track it?

At this point, I feel like even if bigfoot is hanging out in the wilderness of Pennsylvania, he's probably actively hiding from you. Truly, I wish you could find him and live out the movie Harry and the Hendersons, but maybe you should just stop chasing him and give him space? Let him come to you, bro.

Owen: and honestly, that's so impressive. i have a ton of respect for anybody that's a single parent, whether they chose to be or not. jackson's never talked to me much about your dad and i don't really ask him to, but from what i do know, i think millie's extremely resilient and i think she's gone above and beyond when it comes to how well she raised all of you. Owen: well, now that we're talking about it... provided i do get those starter sewing lessons from your mom, maybe our thing could be working on some cute costumes together for the animals at the shelter. we always try to have a halloween event to drum up some more support and potential homes for them. nothing too crazy, just a small event with snacks for people to come and see them and, obviously, hopefully agree to adopt them.

Julia: yeah we don't use the label of dad or father. either sperm donor or douchebag. david if we're feeling generous. but yeah, my mom has really pulled through, she gave everything she had to make sure that we still had a good life. she's the best. Julia: I could definitely be into helping with that, maybe we could even rope tina into helping if she's not swamped with making costumes for people. speaking of halloween, that's when you and jackson got engaged and he hasn't said anything yet to me about if you two have set a date or anything. have you guys planned much yet?

So, plot twist: an old Broadway director I worked with on The Book of Mormon emailed me because apparently the lead on the national tour for Phantom of the Opera had to step away unexpectedly, and now they want me to come in for a limited run. Which sounds glamorous and exciting until you realize it has led to me sitting at my kitchen table, staring into the abyss of my coffee like it personally offended me. Theatre brain says yes. Who cares if it's living out of a suitcase for the next two months? The rest of me is significantly less sure. I finally built a life here that actually feels stable and good and mine. If anyone needs me, I’ll be overthinking professionally for the foreseeable future.

Absolutely go for it, Phantom is one of the very few musicals that I can honestly say I enjoy watching. Granted, I've never actually seen the stage play live, just on youtube from pirated recordings and then of course the movie. But I say you should go for it. When you say lead though, I'm assuming you mean the Phantom and not Raoul? If it's the latter, I don't know if I'd say it's as worth it, I mean yeah that guy gets the girl but it's not as iconic of a role. And okay so the Phantom is technically problematic, but still. Whatever, do it and don't regret it. We'll all still be here when you get back anyway.

Dude, that’s legendary!! Like straight-up movie level revenge, I’m actually deceased. That’s the most iconic thing I’ve heard in months. If I were the ex-boyfriend, I think I would have just disintegrated right there on the spot. How was the rest of the night after that? Did anyone besides you even see what was really happening or did they just enjoy the show?

I feel like he even just looked like he immediately was walking with a figurative tail between his legs from the shame. I can honestly say I've never seen either one of the cheaters back in the bar since. There were definitely some hoots and hollers from a few people, but most everyone else was either too lost in the sauce or self-absorbed to notice. It was a weeknight, which I think it was made it more entertaining for me at least, but usually unless we have an event going on or it's a holiday, weeknights don't really cause the overall crowd to get into the people on the stage. I wish it had been a Friday or Saturday night, though. She'd probably have had the whole bar rallied with her.

Owen: obviously definitely still need to get to know millie more, but yeah, in all reality, i don't think i ACTUALLY have anything to worry about. she seems like an absolute saint, honestly. Owen: wellllll not sure i'll ever be THAT good, but i'm definitely willing to try and see if i can pick it up. 😅 if anything, i could at least get good enough to assist with yours if you wanted me to! and, regardless, even if it's not sewing, hopefully we will find our own little sibling-in-law thing one of these days!

Julia: yeah of course. and you're very right about that, I mean she pretty much raised me, jackson, amber, and marley all on her own. marley was like pretty much at that age where she could start doing a lot more for herself, but obviously still needed a mom and all. Julia: well even if you're not entirely up to speed by halloween, you can still give it a shot and I can always help patch up whatever needs patching up in time for the town party or any other halloween parties you plan on going to. and if it's not sewing then... yeah I'm sure we can figure something else out. maybe something to do with cats or the shelter? not really sure what it would be, but we can figure it out.

Anybody else dreading summer a little bit? Don't get me wrong! Love the sunshine and all that, but I can never get fully into it because I hate being sweaty and gross so much. However, one thing I do love about summer? The chance to go summer shopping! Cute new sun dresses, sunglasses, bathing suits... all of that. So! Anybody want to join me in prepping for summer with some shopping? Let a girl know!

Yes, and no. Yes, because of all the bugs which have already started to ascend from hell. But then no, because we're one season closer to my favorite season: fall. Though I suppose I could use some new summer clothes myself, I wouldn't say no to a shopping trip with my favorite little sister.

Owen: i guess i just realized that even though there's no reason for me to think she doesn't like me, i haven't spent a lot of time with her one-on-one. and, i mean, she's going to be my mother-in-law! i don't want to just assume i have a good relationship with her. i'd rather make sure of it and have her see that i want an actual relationship with her beyond just her seeing me as her son's husband. does that make sense? Owen: sewing, huh? well, i have no idea how to sew. maybe she'd like teaching me a thing or two. you think that's a good idea?

Julia: oh yeah that makes sense. considering how there's always some stereotype about in-laws, especially with the parents. not that I can imagine anyone having a bad relationship with my mom anyway, but unfortunately I guess it happens... Julia: definitely! she loves getting the opportunity to teach sewing tips and tricks, that's where I learned how to make my own halloween costumes. watching her when we were all younger and then eventually she let me handle a needle on my own. hey then maybe you and I could have making our own costumes be our own sibling-in-law hobby together or something lol

Okay unhinged karaoke stories from the bar, you know aside from the many off-key performances of course, lol. So there was this one time a girl walks in looking very inconspicuous, dressed in black from head to toe, hood up and wearing sunglasses despite it being after dark and all that. She orders a drink at the bar and is just sitting there, watching this one couple at a table nearby and I'm thinking... something is going on here, for sure. Next thing, she gets up to sing and it's Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood. Turns out, the couple she was eyeing when she first got there was her now ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend and she starts to reveal herself as she's singing and just the look on their faces when they realized they were caught. Priceless. I may or may not have added her one drink to their bill and they were so embarrassed and in a hurry to pay so they could book it out of there, they didn't notice. Then the poor girl sat and ordered a few more rounds herself, so naturally I told her it was all on the house and took it out of my pay. She deserved something good that night.

Oh god, I've had to hear that song so many times now just within the past week and it doesn't stop with the first of the month either, unfortunately. And at least 90% of the customers that insist on singing it are way off key. The downside of working at a karaoke bar, honestly.
