Ryder couldn’t help the nerves that had been wrestling in his belly all day, but now that he was here, sitting on the dock next to her and watching the sky change colors, all he felt was calm. A calm that resembled the beach right before the sun rose and there were no tourists out yet. A kind of calm that reminded him of the way the leaves changed colors in autumn and fell to the ground. A soothing, happy calm. He prayed to God that she wouldn’t catch him as he stole glances at her as they sat in a comfortable silence. But, it wasn’t her who caught him, the other way around actually, which surprised him. Why would she be stealing looks at him? A chuckle escaped his smile as his broad shoulders shrugged. It was strange, with any other girl Ryder would have been too flustered to speak and blushing so hard he would be asked if he was breathing. But with her, while she did make him stutter over his words, all he wanted to do was impress her. He only hoped that she would see that he was trying to flirt with her. Ryder smiled at the way she got excited, it was adorable. He thought for a moment about how his mornings usually went over, it wasn’t that he was necessarily a morning person but he wasn’t not one either. He shrugged, “I’m not one of those people who needs coffee yet but I do need a shower in the morning to wake me up.” He bit back a smile and his eyes lit up as she called it a date. But upon hearing her correct herself, he was crushed. An internal conflict rose inside him, should he try and call it a date anyways or would he chicken out and go along with her ‘plan.’ Pulling from a source he didn’t know he had, he mustered up courage, “It’s a date.” He said, cooly. He let another laugh, “The only thing that’s saving you from me throwing you in right now, is the chance that you might have your phone on you and I wouldn’t want to be the reason it gets ruined.” He smiled, “But first time I know you don’t have it on you, I’m throwing your ass in there.” He paused for a moment, “Don’t worry, I’ll be right behind you to make sure you don’t drown.”
He scratched at his neck, a little habit he had for dealing with nerves. Watching her change her position, he moved to face her instead of facing out towards the water. He crossed his legs criss-cross and sat there, scanning her face for a moment. God how was she even real? He was happy though that she didn’t fake laugh at his cheese line or tell him bluntly that it was the stupidest thing she had heard, the latter something his ex girlfriend definitely would have done. Instead, she sat there, smiling and looking like she was hanging off his every word. A look he was probably mirroring considering he was hanging off her every word. The change in Marley’s tone of voice made goosebumps rise over him, but in a good way. The kind of goosebumps people get when they listen to the best part of their favorite song. “Alright.” was all he managed to get out, while a smile played at his lips. Ryder bit down on the inside of his cheek, trying to keep himself from reading too much into her compliments. “Color me impressed” he repeated, “I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say that but my grandma” He laughed a little, he wasn’t making fun of her though, in fact he thought it was adorable. He shook his head, “No, you’re better than her, I swear.” He took another moment to admire her, looking at her eyes mainly and the way they reflected the light. He sunk down to her level, which with the height advantage he had over her was noticeable, so that they were on the same eye level. “You have the prettiest eyes I have ever seen.” He said in low voice.
Guys were always puzzling to her, back in high school in her home town she was beyond thrown off guard when her ex even gave her the time of the day. But she fell easily and she fell hard, that’s why she was beyond nervous around Ryder, yet something about him made her feel safe. He was gentle and kind, a rugged handsome that was matched with a boyish charm that made her constantly sport the softest of smiles. Her blue eyes wandered along the scene in front of her, it was romantic, all of this was something she was going to undoubtedly scribble down into her journal that was now placed beside her hip on the dock. Nibbling on her bottom lip, she adjusted her posture as she glanced back over at him sheepishly now that she was caught looking at him. Marley couldn’t help it, this was all like one of her favorite romantic comedies, they meet on fate’s path and it’s all beginning. “Coffee is a dangerous thing, every time I drink it I become all jittery, it’s freaky.” The brunette admitted sheepishly with a small laugh slipping up past her lips, cheeks burning in embarrassment still since she called their morning jog a date. She thought she was being silly, calling something like that a date, the last thing she wanted to do was scare him off. But upon him confirming it was a date, she was beaming over at him with a nod of her head, “It’s a date.” She repeated softly, teeth sinking into her lesser lip again as she bit down on a smile. A raise of her brows followed his next string of words, “I’d like to see you try! I know I may not look it, but I’m vicious!”
With his current movement, she felt a bit more shy, pulling her knees closer to her chest because now he was looking at her and she was worried something was wrong. Was her hair a mess from the wind? Was there a bug on her? Sucking a deep breath down to fill her lungs, she breathed out through her nose and tilted her head to the side to look at him. Her heart was pounding in her chest but she didn’t mind it, in fact, she had gotten used to it ever since he looked at her like she was something special. No one had really looked at her like her was, causing her chest to tighten as she stole glances over to him. A small laugh left her, scrunching her nose up as she tilted her head to the left, “I told you I’m not the coolest, I say things grandmas would say, but I make cookies just as well as they do too. So it’s not a total downer.” She explained with a smile that seemingly melted into a softer look when he moved to crane his head down, catching her gaze. The girl was frozen when he spoke, the compliment taking her breath away, the tone of his voice spinning around in her mind, “I-I....I do?” Marley managed to get out without choking on her words, unable to move her gaze away from him, locked in this stare down that was suffocating her, “Thank you...”
