Siempre Bruja

I’m enjoying very much the Netflix show “Siempre Bruja”. I admit the story is a bit weak but I honestly don’t care for many reasons, here’s some:

1 - To see a fantasy show, hailing from Colombia, is a victory in itself. The so called “developed world” (specially the US) has always held monopoly over speculative fiction. To see different perspectives from other cultures is refreshing.

2 - It’s aesthetically pleasing. Set in Cartagena, it would be really hard for this show to be ugly. Besides that, a witch story in a tropical (and urban, let’s not forget that) place feels so natural and, as some of you know, also very familiar to me.

3 - Many years ago I read that “black people don’t like fantasy”. That broke my heart at the time, but well, that statement was dead wrong. I’ve always loved fantasy and sci fi and I must say that we are living a golden age of representation. “Siempre Bruja” is the latest addition to that. To see a black witch as a main character is incredibly important to me, and to my child self.

4 - It’s colombian as hell. And the boys are hot.

and sometimes, when i’m drowning in the darkest parts of my despair, i see a spark. a glimmer of hope. some proof that magic still exists. whether it’s an old soul i had once loved reaching out to me to share some light or it’s a kind stranger so pure that when they walk away i swear i can see their angel wings branching off of their back. it’s so simple but so impactful. i start to think that i’m stuck forever in the vastness that i’ve thrown myself into until i see the spark. the glimmer. the magic that leads me out into the light again.

— this is what i stay alive for. the small lovely things that remind me why i deserve to escape the despair.
