Do you ever think about the concept of dogs… and get a little teary-eyed? I’m not much of a dog person myself; I find them a little slobbery and tiring in person, but the things dogs do? Amazing. Astonishing. If dogs are a mirror to human capability, if they are a reflection on the things we create when given the chance– then humans really might not be so bad.

Dogs that are bred to guard other animals. Dogs that will find a small child and protect it. Dogs that are brought to hospitals and vet clinics and are brave when our own bravery has failed us.

Dogs that will run into burning fires for us. Dogs that will defend from abusive partners for us. Dogs that will wait at train stations every day for their owners to come back to– even after the owner has lost the ability to return.

Seeing-eye dogs who are taught to guide us. Education dogs that are trained to listen to kids read to build their confidence. Dogs that calm us and protect us from things inside our own minds. Dogs that are there to love us when we struggle to do it ourselves.

“Man’s best friend” is a phrase that barely begins to cover an animal that in many way proves to be unfailingly good when given the chance and unfailingly helpful when raised thoughtfully and well.

Some people argue humanity is not worth saving. But if you asked a dog? They would say were more than worthy of a better world.
