I came to life
I donât think there has been a beetlebabes version of this iconic scene before.
I wanted to know how he would feel in my style, and baby looks frantic.
"You're making it very hard to behave."
Lydia smiled to herself in the mirror, her eyes darting to meet the poltergeist before returning to her work. The mirror acted as a split-screen portal; half of it being reflective so she could work on her makeup, the other half a window into the Netherworld and allowing her to see Betelgeuse on the other side. The young womanâs eye makeup was deep and dramatic, accompanied by crimson lips so dark they were almost black.Â
âAm I?â Lydia feigned innocence as she clasped a choker around her pale neck; the spider broach heâd gotten her years ago for their anniversary.
The grating sound of aged metal cut through the silence of the night, catching Lydia's attention. She pushed away from the marble column, moving carefully to the old wrought iron door. As she drew near, goosebumps broke out along her skin as she felt the frigid air spilling out of the mausoleum. For a moment she hesitated, turning her head to look around the cemetery once more, before pushing onward and taking a few uncertain steps into the doorway.
The light from the cemeteryâs path lights filtered in through one of the stained glass windows of the mausoleum, allowing Lydia to see faint details in the darkness. To either side of her, coffins lined the shelves, long-forgotten, their nameplates no longer legible and lost to the passage of time. At the far end of the room was a single casket, flanked on either side by small tables, littered with flowers that had withered away ages ago. Above the casket were a pair of ancient looking wall sconces that held half-melted candles.Â
Judging by the build of the coffins and the architecture of the stone, Lydia would have guessed the structure dated back to the 1890s. She found it absolutely beautiful here and suddenly wished she had her camera. She continued making her way further in, reaching up a delicate hand to gently run it over the dust-covered lid of one of the coffins.
The heavy door of the mausoleum slammed shut behind her with a loud bang, causing Lydia to jump and let out a frightened shriek. She whirled around to face the entrance, slapping her hands over her mouth. After a long, silent pause, she let out a laugh, and her eyebrows raised as she realized she could see the frosty evidence of her breath in the air. A chill overcame her from head to toe and she shivered slightly, wrapping her arms around her tiny frame. The thin, lacey material of her dress did little to shield her from the jarring cold spot sheâd stumbled into.Â
Dark eyes focused on the door, Lydia continued stepping backwards over the old stone floor until she met the ornate coffin at the end of the room, its edge brushing against her hip. She let out a sigh, one hand coming to rest over the coffinâs lid while she placed the other over her chest, her heart hammering against her ribcage so loud she was sure it would wake the dead.
Imagine you and your F/O
âïžđȘČ
The panic that was tightening in her chest began to subside the very moment Betelgeuse embraced her. Lydia closed her eyes and inhaled deeply as he placed a gentle kiss against the top of her head. She gazed adoringly at him as he gave Barbara what-for, and she couldnât help the faint smile that began to play at the corners of her mouth.
God, I love him, she thought to herself. Â
Barbara, however, stood completely still, her chocolate brown eyes wide as dinner plates. Adam, too, was shocked, his jaw gone slack in awe at how this complete stranger was speaking to them as if he knew them.Â
But he was passionately defending Lydia, and wouldnât he do the very same for Barbara? Adam took note of the manâs gentle nature as he silently comforted Lydia, and how the young woman completely melted into his arms. He saw how Byronâs hand gripped Lydiaâs shoulderâsoft, yet with an undertone of possessiveness. As a man, he read the body language easily. It screamed âSheâs mine, and youâre hurting her. This is a warning.â
Byronâs spiel ended as Charles appeared in the doorway, blissfully ignorant of what had just transpired between everyone. There was a moment of terribly awkward silence as they just stood there, not knowing how to react.Â
âOh! Uhm! I changed my mind!â Delia called out, her voice cracking a bit. She immediately started bringing out skillets and placing them on top of the stove. âHow does sausage, eggs, and bacon sound? Hm? Want some toast as well? Thereâs orange juice in the refrigerator!âÂ
Lydia smiled inwardly and gave her dad a good morning kiss on the cheek. She lead Byron into the living room to sit for a bit, just so she could decompress after what had just happened. Barbaraâs eyes followed them all the while, until Charles and Adam began exchanging pleasantries.Â
âThank you,â Lydia whispered, her hand finding Betelgeuseâs and giving it a tight squeeze.Â
Everything happened so quickly.
Lydiaâs heart felt like it was about to burst forth out of her chest, like one of the little creatures in the Alien movies. The look of confusion and panic in Barbaraâs eyes almost pained her to see. She tried to explain, but Barbara just wouldnât let the young woman speak. At the scent of cigarette smoke, Lydia sought out its sourceâJuno, seated casually on the edge of her bed. Barbara immediately went silent as she took notice of the woman as well, her curls bouncing as she whirled her head around to see the older ghost.
Distantly, Lydia registered the sound of a door slamming and heavy footsteps against the staircase before her door flung open, relief instantly washing over her as Byron appeared. After shutting and locking the door behind himself, he immediately stalked across the room to be at Lydiaâs side, his arms circling around her in a protective embrace. Barbaraâs jaw dropped and with wide, amazed eyes, she simply watched in abject horror as Byronâs disguise flickered away, leaving the form of the bio exorcist that had tormented them years ago. She didnât even hear the conversationâall she saw was sweet little Lydia, her mortal daughter, wrapped in the arms of a monster.
After a beat of silence, Barbara found her voice. âLydia⊠WHAT is going on here? I need you to explain this!â Her dark eyes flicked to Juno, then, and she pointed in the older ghost womanâs direction with an accusatory finger. âYou too!â She called out, the anger in her voice evident. Sandworm wrangler that she was, Barbara had no fear of whatever authority Juno might have wielded. Not when it came to Lydia. âAdam and I thought you had taken care of himâwhy is he with her? Why isnât he locked up in the Netherworld, away from all of us? Thatâs where he belongs! Donât you remember what he didâwhat he tried to do?!âÂ
Having heard his wifeâs distressed, raised voice, a knock came at the door, and Adamâs concerned voice rang through. âBarbara, honey? Lydia? Whatâs going on?â The knob rattled. âWhy is the door locked?âÂ
Lydiaâs shoulders bunched with tension as she pressed her cheek against the lapel of Betelgeuseâs jacket. Theyâre going to take him away from me, she thought to herself as the panic built. Somewhere deep inside, she knew that wouldnât happenâbut even the fear of him being torn away from her for whatever reason was the greatest threat she could imagine. Lydia wasnât sure what happened thenâif Barbara unlocked the door, or perhaps it was Betelgeuse with a wave of his hand, or even Junoâbut the door was thrown open, Adam shuffling in in a panicked hurry. His spectacled eyes caught sight of Betelgeuse immediately.Â
Reaching up to adjust his glasses, Adam took in the scene unfolding around himâhis beloved wife Barbara, looking enraged and ready to attack the poltergeist. Juno continued to sit comfortably on the edge of Lydiaâs bed, a long and skinny cigarette clutched between her boney fingers. She looked as if sheâd rather be filing an eternityâs worth of paperwork than dealing with any bit of this nonsense. Finally, he took a moment to truly study the focal point, the epicenter of this messâLydia and Betelgeuse.
The ghostâs arms wrapped around Lydia like two striped boa constrictorsâone wrapped firmly around her waist and the other gently cradling her head against his chest. He only barely registered the presence of the others in the room; his entire focus was on the young woman pressed against him. Lydia looked ready to run like a scared rabbit, her eyes tightly closed as she tried to steady her nervous heartbeat. She finally opened her dark honey-colored eyes to see Adam, and the expression on her face could only be described as pleading.Â
Silence stretched on for what felt like forever, until Barbaraâs passionate voice cut through the air once again. âAdam, heâs here with herâtheyâre together! We canât let this happen!â She whipped her head to face Juno again. âDid you know about this?!â
Betelgeuse fought the urge to grin at the look of abject horror that had spread across Barbaraâs face at his appearance. Normally, heâd be clicking his heels and stomping his feet with glee over such a reaction to his visage. But, he only caught it out of the corner of his eye, as his primary focus was on Lydia at the moment. When he had first pulled her into his arms, he could feel her heart hammering in her chest, and he was doing his best to calm her now, running his fingers through her hair as she hid her face in his chest, and doing his best to ignore that Barbara was shouting at themâeven Juno, which he knew would NOT go over well with the old bat.
âI had taken care of him, Barbara. Betel was locked in Solitary for years. He was without any contact with anyone, even his actual friends and family in the Nether,â Juno explained, still sitting calmly on the bed. âBut a bond is a bond, and sticking him in Solitary for a long period of time was no good for either him or Lydia. And that ring you see on Lydiaâs finger has been there since their ill advised ceremony when she was a teen. She just didnât want to say anything to you, or anyone. She couldnât remove it, butâŠBetel was gone, so what did it matter?â There was more to their bond than that and why it was as strong as it was, of course, but Junoâd leave that to Betelgeuse and Lydia to explain to their family if they wanted. âAs for what he tried to do, I remember it very well. It took me weeks to file that paperwork and get everything back to normal. It was a disaster on both sides. I wonât downplay how awful it was. However, those were the actions of an extremely powerful, cursed ghost with a memory and location binding, who found himself bored, trapped, and angry. The powers that be hoped that having such a level of control over him would keep him from hurting anyone, but a poltergeist with no access to proper emotional or physical release of any kind is more dangerous than one with one. Theyâll never put this in writing, of course, but those above me in the hierarchy concede that what all of you went through was at least in part, their fault, for not properlyâŠmanaging Betel from the get go.â
Betelgeuse, of course, was listening to every word, though he didnât look it, but he could multitask. Once he was sure that Lydia was calm and no longer panicked about their proverbial cat being launched out of the bag, he might jump into the fray with this situation, if only to stoke the ire of Barbara. But for now, he was content (and delighted) to let Juno handle the Maitlandâs. Juno sounded calm, but he could tell even she was annoyed by Barbaraâs demands.
Lydiaâs shoulders became very tense at the sound of Adamâs voice at the door before Juno let him in with a flick of her cigarette. When the door shut again behind him, Betelgeuse suddenly had two more arms that rubbed up and down the tense muscles of Lydiaâs arms and back. Heâd half a mind to toss a peace sign at the three other ghosts and disappear off to the Nether with Lydia, but he didnât think Juno would appreciate that very much in the long run. Now, Betelgeuse didnât really care what Juno thought of him at the end of the dayâŠbut heâd prefer her to remain on their side of this whole thing.
âDid I know about what? Them?â She started laughing at the question, and it took her a moment to start talking again. âYes, I did. Mind you, I didnât place Betelwith Lydia with the hope that this WOULD happen. The bond that was made years ago with their marriage had no intentional emotional attachment on Betelgeuseâs part or Lydiaâs. He just wanted out. And with Lydia as his haunt, and the bond an his tether, he got what he wanted, with some limitations. It was a win for us. He was mostly out of our and dare I say, happy with the initial arrangement. And she could send him back to his house in the Nether anytime she wanted, if he got to be annoying. So, I kept an eye on them, naturally, making sure Betel was behaving, and then THAT happened all on its own.â She pointed at the couple with her almost spent cigarette.
âTheyâve been together for quite awhile now, and you two might have noticed it yourselves if you ever stepped one foot out of your little home in the suburbs of the Nether and maybe go downtown.â Juno rolled her eyes. She really didnât understand that Maitlandâs. They worked so hard to get to live in the Nether and they seemed to have never really explored it? âHeâs been bringing her over to the Nether for small periods of time and showing her the sights. Tells anyone who asks that sheâs his wife.â Juno began to laugh again. âThe relationship has been REALLY good for the Nether. Betelgeuse doesnât wreak havoc on our side anymore or try to truly expose our world. He doesnât even touch anyone unless theyâve upset or hurt Lydia in any way. And she, by some miracle, can get him to do or stop doing just about anything.â
âSo, if youâre wanting to stop thisâŠbe it on your heads, Maitlands.â Juno ended with a shrug, her eyes now moving to Betelgeuse and Lydia. âNow, you two, youâve been very quiet and let me talkâŠIâm both concerned and proud. Are you intending to take any negative action against the Maitlandâs?â
âIf Barb continues to upset Lydia, yâ canât reallt expect me not tâ do somethinâ, June Bug,â Betelgeuse answered, his raspy voice a deep rumble, as his eyes cut in the direction of Barbara. His two extra arms had disappeared. Juno just rolled her eyes at the nickname. âAs yâ saidâŠI donât take kindly tâ people doinâ that. Doesnât matter if theyâre livinâ or dead.â Now his attention was fully on Barbara and by some small extension, Adam, though he didnât seem as mad as his wife. âThough yer Lydiaâs familyâŠMaybe I should let her handle yâ; Sheâs kinda magnificent when sheâs pissed off.â He grinned down at Lydia.
Barbara listened intently as Juno spoke, her dark eyes darting from the older woman to Betelgeuse, and she couldnât believe what she was seeing and hearing. She tried to follow Junoâs explanation; how the so-called wedding from years ago was a genuine binding contract between Lydia and Betelgeuse. Heâd been locked away from society for a few years until The Powers That Be had decided to set him loose to reunite with his almost bride. Barbaraâs eyes focused on the wedding band on Lydiaâs finger, as her delicate little hands clutched the striped fabric of the poltergeistâs grimy suit jacket.
A sudden pang of guilt hit Barbara as Juno continued onâhow could they have missed the ring? Everything was so chaotic immediately after sheâd wrangled the sandworm from Titan to crash through the house and send Betelgeuse back to the Netherworld. All she could remember from the days and weeks that followed were her and Adam trying to live harmoniously with the Deetz family. She vaguely remembered the teenaged girl keeping mostly to herself, even if she felt comfortable to spend time around the Maitlands while they tried to remodel the downstairs portion of the house back to their personal taste.
Charles and Delia had also been wrapped up in their own lives as they navigated their new realityâthey had a couple of ghosts for roommates. Charles had submerged himself fully in the real estate business of Winter River and made deals with other elites, keeping brunch appointments and playing golf with the likes of the Brewster family in the neighboring town of Peaceful Pines. Delia endured the country life as best she could, but she made frequent trips back to the city to reunite with her artistic socialite friends. Her schedule was full of gallery tours and magazine interviews.Â
Lydia, as usual, was a forgotten afterthought.Â
To think that Lydia was hiding the fact she still had the ring, let alone that it couldnât be removed from her finger, broke Barbaraâs heart. The young womanâs style was so strange and unusual, perhaps Barbara had noticed, and just thought it was a thrift store trinket? She shook her head to clear her thoughts, her wild curls bouncing. Juno was rightâshe and Adam had barely explored the Netherworld since they were granted the right to bypass their haunting years and become permanent residents of their quaint little Afterlife suburb. They were placed amongst people like themselves; neighbors who still worked 9-5 office jobs and trimmed their lawns on Sundays with reel mowers like they were back in Mayberry. Nevermind the fact that they were all very much dead.
Barbara deflated momentarily, as another stab of shame hit her. Theyâd all been so wrapped up in their livesâand afterlivesâthey never thought to check in on how Lydia was adjusting after the incident. She felt Adam come to stand beside her and she looked at him, her mouth set in a hard line as she was at a loss for words. Juno spoke of Lydia and Betelgeuse being happy together, and still, she couldnât believe it. They felt genuine affection for one another. They were in love. Lydia was his wife.
At Betelgeuseâs words, Barbaraâs eyes snapped back to him and the wind returned to her sails. She held up her hand again, pointing at the poltergeist this time. Her voice was angry and accusing, full of disbelief and fury. âYouâ you had to have tricked her into this. Brainwashed her, lied to her, coerced her, something. Lydia is a good girl and thereâs no way sheâd willingly be with someoneâwith someTHING like youââ
âSHUT UP! JUST STOP!â
Lydiaâs voice, usually so quiet and meek, bellowed out and silenced Barbaraâs tirade. Sheâd whirled around and stepped forward out of Betelgeuseâs embrace to be just a bit closer to Adam and Barbara. Her chocolate eyes were wild and her cheeks a bright pink as she spoke, her voice full of the emotion and pain sheâd repressed for years for everyone elseâs convenience. Â
âI am with him because I want to be! He hasnât tricked me or forced me into anything!â Lydiaâs fists clenched at her sides, practically shaking with her frustration at the situation. âI love the two of you like a mother and father, but you donât really know anything about meâneither do Dad and Delia! From moving here without my mom, to what school and college I had to attend, what apartment I had to getâeverything has been decided for me!â Lydia sidestepped then, pointing a delicate finger towards her husband behind her. âHe is the only oneâand I mean this, the only oneâwhoâs ever given me a choice. He understands me, he takes care of me, and he loves me. And I love him too!â Barbaraâs jaw dropped open at Lydiaâs admission. She risked a glance at the poltergeist and a wave of heated anger rolled through her because the bastard was actually smirking at her in victory. She reeled back for another verbal attack before she felt Adamâs hand grasp her shoulder firmly, holding her in place. His voice, usually so calm and easy going, held a tone indicating command.
âBarb, let it go. Come on.â
âBut Adam! Sheââ âCome on.âÂ
An oppressive silence filled the dark bedroom as Barbara turned from her husband back to Betelgeuse and Lydia. She glared viciously at the poltergeist over the top of Lydiaâs head before conceding, only briefly glancing in Junoâs direction before she allowed Adam to open the door and guide her from the room. Adam paused before exiting and cast a glance to Betelgeuse, locking eyes with him for the briefest moment and giving a slight nod before turning and leaving, shutting the door behind him.
Betelgeuse noticed as Junoâs words started to hit home, the wind figuratively going out of her sails. That is, until he started talking. Then she got all riled up again she was some kind of irritated feline. She was practically spitting mad as she pointed an accusing finger at him. Then he accused him of trickery and lyingâŠand coercion. In her defense, these things were not exactly out of his wheelhouse, and were he not a man in love, if things had been differentâŠ.he might have done the things she was accusing him of exactly. But, he did love Lydia. She was his wife. Had he expected to become her friend? No. Had he ever thought it possible for him fall in love? Also, no. But, it had happened. And there was no going back for him.
He opened his mouth to say something particularly insulting to Barbara, in defense of himselfâŠin defense of Lydia, but his wife, bless her, beat him to the punch. And boy, was she mad. She stepped out of his protective hold and advanced on Barbara, the pain evident on her face.
And what Lydia said was right. Even though they had been bound together a bit unexpectedly, he had not forced her to be with him. His harsh gaze softened at her declarations, giving her a fond look, but of course, he smirked proudly at Barb when her gaze turned to him. She was proud of Lydia for standing up for herself, for speaking her truth. He crossed his arms in front of him, brows furrowing as he prepared for another verbal onslaught from the other ghost, but was subsequently shocked when the normally easy going Adam stepped in, his tone leaving no room for argument.
And after another glare from Barbara, indicating that this conversation was not over, the ghostly woman left the room, Adam following along behind his wife. But before he left, Adam met his eyes. Something unspoken passed between them in that moment, the two men nodding at each other in understanding before Adam, too, was gone.
Betelgeuse waited to speak until he heard the attic door slam above them. And when it had, the tension across his whole body fell away, and he stepped to Lydia, taking ahold of her hand before looking over to Juno. âWell, that couldâve gone worse than it did. No one got banished. The room wasnât destroyed.â He let out a little laugh. âSorry Barb went after us like that, babes. But I think that had tâ be the worst of it, yeah?â
âNow you two just have to break the news to her parents, Betel. I sound proofed the room from most of the argument, but they had to have caught some of it when Barbara first started shouting,â Juno piped in, looking apologetically at Lydia. âI donât know how theyâre going to take it. I mean, they took the revelation of ghosts being real pretty okay. So, luck might be on your side.â
Betelgeuse gave Lydia a hopeful glance. âI ainât goinâ anywhere, babes.â
After Adam exited the room with Barbara, Lydia let out a heavy exhale. Sheâd never really yelled at anyone in such a way, especially not the Maitlands, whom she considered her beloved ghost parents. When Betelgeuse stepped up beside her and took her hand, she only barely registered what he was saying. The adrenaline and panic had left her suddenly very drained and, after giving the poltergeistâs hand a gentle squeeze, she made her way to her writing desk to sit down and lean her head against her palms.
When Lydia spoke, her voice was distant and tired.
âI just need a minute. That wasâŠa lot.â
The two remaining ghosts continued to speak for a few moments, but Lydia didnât focus on their words. She was stuck in her head, going over the blow up that had just transpired and what the fallout would possibly be. She loved Adam and Barbara, and while she knew they loved her too, she knew theyâd never understand the relationship between herself and Betelgeuse. Barbara had accused him of manipulation and brainwashing, and deep down, it infuriated her. Lydia loved him, of her own free will, down to her bones.
She only hoped the Maitlands could at least respect her choice to be with Betelgeuse.Â
Now, she had to tell her father and Delia.
Taking a deep breath, Lydia pushed away from the desk and stood. âWe need to go ahead and tell them. Quickly, like ripping off a bandaid, before Adam and Barbara can talk to them. And whatever happens after⊠happens.â Shrugging, she turned her head to look at her husband and nodded, more to herself than to him. She stepped away from her desk, towards the door, and stretched out her hand to him in offering. When she spoke, her voice was still a bit nervous.
âI donât know how itâs going to go with them. Hopefully they won't freak out too bad.â Lydia took in Betelgeuseâs form, admiring his ghoulish appearance, and she smiled just a little bit. âYou can be in disguise if you want, but I understand if you donâtâwhichever you prefer.âÂ
Lydia turned then to Juno and gave her a respectful nod. Though sheâd only been around Juno a few times, Lydia found her a little intimidating. She wouldâve loved to get to know the womanâwho she was before she died and what she was really like behind all the business and bureaucracy. âI really appreciate what you said back thereâvalidating ourâŠrelationship. I donât think they would have believed just me.â Lydia sighed then and closed her eyes. âI donât think they believe me even now, but I do think you backing us up helped. So⊠thank you.â She opened her eyes again and nodded once more before turning and opening her bedroom door, deeply inhaling before heading out and beginning to descend the stairs.
Lydia tried to keep her voice even as she called out.
âDad? Delia? Are you guys still here?â Delia rounded the corner from the kitchen, her eyebrows practically shooting up to her hairline. She spoke quickly, concerned. âWhatâs going on? Is Byron okay? And I thought I heard yelling?â Lydia waved her hand dismissively, casting a glance behind her up towards her bedroom door.Â
âWell, about that⊠look, can you guys come here into the living room? We need to talkâŠâ
