Hello! I have only just started believing in astrology. I was pretty skeptical for a while, but the more I learn about my natal chart the more everything seems to click into place! So my question is, how do you use your birth chart as a tool to better yourself and grow as a person and witch/pagan?
Ooooh I LOVE this question!!! So many answers to give where do I even start!!
When I first started out with astrology, I was super skeptical also! Then I started reading up on it more, and the more I learned about my chart, the more I came to understand and know myself! It takes a long time to learn the symbolism behind every placement, but once you get it down, it opens up a world of knowledge.
So for those of you who might not be as familiar with astrology, this is what a birth chart generally looks like below. (I make these digital chart drawings as phone wallpapers and desktop wallpapers if anyone is interested lol)
The birth chart acts as a map. It’s a map of your soul, your life, your unique existence on Earth. Everyone has a bit of each sign in their chart, regardless if there are planets or points in the sign or not. The birth chart reflects the placements of the planets at the moment of your birth, and this chart is carried through your entire life, it never changes. Your birth chart can give you information on every aspect of your life, if you know where to look and what to look for!
The birth chart shows you potential traits or situations, but you have the ultimate say in what you do with those potentials. You can choose to embody the more positive traits, or you can choose to embody the negative. If you say you’re an aggressive asshole “because you’re an Aries,” you’re wrong. You’re an asshole because you choose to be an asshole. Aries does have the potential to be aggressive, but you have a choice in how you handle yourself. You can be aggressive, or you can be assertive.
One thing I suggest learning right off the bat is the traditional sign rulerships (pictured above). Before the outer planets - Uranus, Neptune & Pluto - were discovered, astrologers assigned Saturn to Capricorn & Aquarius, Jupiter to Sagittarius & Pisces, and Mars to Aries & Scorpio. If you know which planet belongs to which sign, you likely have a better understanding of how they work together as well as individually. This is SO important to learn, it’s like the foundation of the entire study. By using the traditional sign rulerships, you can determine so much more extra information from a chart than what you would’ve gotten without using the rulership method.
For example, if someone has their Midheaven (a career point) in the 11th house in Libra, but they have Venus, the ruler of Libra, in the 10th house in Virgo, then Virgo and Mercury (the ruler of Virgo) as well as Venus transits will all be important to the person’s career.
I use my birth chart as a life guide pretty constantly. Whenever I feel lost or unsure of what I should be doing, I look at my chart for a little reminder of who I am and where I’m going in life. I journal in response to my chart pretty often, about specific placements and how I reflect their meaning within myself and my life. Take some time to learn all that you can about a specific placement in your chart, and then think about how it relates to you. Look at the houses and planets this placement connects to by aspect as well as by rulership for more information. It’s really helpful sometimes to hone in on one planet or placement in your chart and journal about it. In fact, I do this as astrological shadow work sometimes, it’s really eye-opening when you take the time to reflect.
Then, when you get into transits (the current placements of the planets), progressions (a slightly more complicated, symbolic approach), solar returns (the transit chart on your birthday which effects your year ahead), etc… That opens up a whole NEW level of understanding. Predictive astrology is helpful in narrating your unique story. This is where you see the personal life events and transformations happening that shape you as a person. Transits especially are very important to keep track of, and once you get into the habit of watching the transits of the planets and how they move, you’ll start to notice the type of impact certain planets have on your chart. Not only are you learning about how the planets affect you as an individual, but watching the transits helps with feeling more in tune with the universe and its planetary cycles of time also.
So I guess that’s basically how I use my chart to grow as a person, but as a witch…
As a witch, my astrology practice seeps into everything as well. I use astrological symbols in sigils sometimes. I plan out my spells and rituals for specific dates and times according to lunar phase & sign, planetary transits and planetary hours (learn these too). If a certain sign is leaning heavy at the time (like right now there are 4 planets in Capricorn and 3 in Pisces, so those two signs are leaning a bit heavier than the rest of the zodiac wheel), I’ll determine the type of spell and my ingredients based on those signs, as they’re more influential at the moment.
For example, the Pisces New Moon is coming up in a few days, and I’m planning a spell to help me remember my dreams (dreaming and sleep are ruled by Pisces and Neptune). I’m aligning my spell’s goal with the corresponding symbols of Pisces. I’ve selected my ingredients to be mainly items relating to the concept of sleep or dreaming, as well as aligning with the Pisces zodiac energy. Since there is no planetary hour of Neptune (the planetary hours are a very old concept in astrology, dating way before the outer planets were discovered), I’m planning for the hour of the traditional ruler of Pisces, which is Jupiter. I also considered using the hour of the Moon, because of the lunar associations with sleep and dreaming as well.
I hope that was a helpful answer to your question!
If you have any more questions related to witchcraft or astrology, I’d be happy to answer! 😊✨💖
