Gyomei rationalizes his sadness.

When he talks to Tanjiro about what happened with the kids, he describes the incident in detail and how it hurt him, ending with "Nothing to be done..That's how kids are." He knows deep down that their betrayal wasn't out of intentional evil; it's just their self-centered nature. But this understanding doesn't stop him from becoming a really distrustful person. He's aware of what hurt him that night and knows that Sayo's apology could have made a difference. Still knowing why he suffers and what caused it doesn't stop the pain or allow healing.

He's really sympathetic and smart which helps him understand why people do what they do. But at the same time he believes people will always mess up and hurt each other because it's just human nature. So he keeps his distance preferring to avoid getting hurt especially by kids.

It's sad because Gyomei is naturally a deeply caring and loving person, but he has to fight against his gentle nature to keep himself isolated and only focused on fighting.
