Balsa Wood is still a relevant surfcraft core material for some designs. Wave specific nose riders benefit from the lack of flex Balsa Wood provides. The shape remains exceptionally consistent providing for a predictable nose riding experience. Big wave guns benefit from a variety of Balsa Woods characteristics which essentially makes for an ocean going Cadillac El Dorado. Fishes are kind of a toss up. I’m a process guy. I just dig building. The thing that’s rad to me about building surfboards is that once you have a finished product the process continues. Freshly laminated bottom contours. I’ve always subscribed to the subtle channel approach. Part of it is that it’s easier to laminate, sand and finish these style. Working with the fins, effectively flattening rocker and providing some little places to finish sand release edges makes for speed with control.
