Reflection:

Overall, I have enjoyed this class alot! I enjoyed jumping out of my comfort zone every now and then and thinking outside of the box. I’m super happy and excited about how all of my pieces turned out. Each lesson brought about new and unique terms and learning objectives. I cannot wait to start and paint at home keeping in mind the wide variety of painting techniques and important terms that I have learned throughout this class.

Painting as Object: Group Project Progress

For our last and final painting, we were instructed to choose a partner and bring in various supplies depending on whether we wanted to do either a woven or soft painting.

My partner and I chose to do a woven inspired painting. We brought in various supplies such as thread and needles, a square white canvas, battery operated Christmas lights, yarn, ribbon, pipe cleaners, and raffia.

We decided to use the red and multi-colored green and blue thread, the canvas, and the Christmas lights. It took us a little while to get our ideas together for what we wanted to make, but we finally came up with an interesting idea that included cutting the canvas with a sharp blade.

We first cut small even holes on each side of the canvas so that the lights can poke through. Once the lights were placed in their correct spots, we then took some tape and taped the light cables in the back of the canvas. Next, we took a sharp blade, and cut multiple lines in the canvas. After the lines were cut, we then took the red thread and wove it up and over the canvas slits into a box like shape. We then took the green and blue multi-colored thread and started to weave and loop a tree shape. For an extra touch, we made a yellow star for the top of the tree using a yellow pipe cleaner.

On Monday, we are going to add our final touches and turn on the lights to showcase the finished piece. Below I will add a progress picture of our group’s painting as object painting.

Lucio Fontana

For our woven painting, we got some inspiration from the artist named Lucio Fontana. He is an Argentine painter born on February 19th, 1899. He is known as the original creator of the art movement called Spatialism. Fontana intended to synthesize colour, sound, space, movement, and time into a new type of art.

His pieces are super interesting, unique, and different. I would have never though to cut the canvas instead of just painting on it. By cutting the canvas, it shows and expresses a lot of emotion and tenseness. I cannot wait to see how my group’s piece comes out. I’m especially super excited to turn on the Christmas lights.

Group: Painting as Object Process

My partner and I decided to put our materials together to create a “woven” painting. We came up with a few ideas of how we wanted to put it together:

1. Using fabric and all the thread we had to create an intricate woven painting.

2. Taking out the entire center of the canvas and weaving all of the material together over it. 

3. Using the needles we brought as supports on the ends of the stretcher bars to weave the threads together.

4. Create an image by weaving thread.

5. Using paint to dip the strips into and combining it with fabric to weave over the stretcher bars.

6. Using pipe cleaners to weave with the dyed Rafia.

We ultimately decided to use the Christmas lights, canvas, and thread to create our woven painting. We cut even holes across the canvas and then pushed the lights into each hole. We then secured the lights with tape. We ran into some problems with the lights splitting the canvas too much but that was quickly fixed with tape. Then, through the inspiration of Lucio Fontana, we sliced the canvas all the way down horizontally between the lights to create space to weave the thread. It took a lot of putting things down and seeing if we wanted to go in that direction. Also, trying to see what thread we wanted to use. We weaved the thread through the canvas and created a box shape with red thread. Then, using multi-colored (green, yellow, and blue) thread we weaved it into the already weaved (red) string to create an image of a tree. We are still in the process of getting the lights to work and finding out if we wanted to add anything to it still. This is what it looks like so far. 

Lucio Fontana

We found our inspiration of slicing the canvas from Lucio Fontana. He is known as the founder of Spatialism. His paintings of slicing canvas were made to create a break in the two-dimension plane. He stated, “I do not want to make a painting; I want to open up space, create a new dimension, tie in the cosmos, as it endlessly expands beyond the confining plane of the picture”. I particularly enjoy how he presents these slashes in his canvases. By using solid colors with these slashes, the slashes become the primary focus of the artwork.

Painting as Object

What are the properties of “woven” painting?

The properties of woven painting are weaving, alternating, crossing over, intertwining, pattern, and squares.

What do we associate with it?

We associate weaving, knitting, and fabric with it.

How does “woven” relate to painting?

A canvas is woven.

What makes a painting woven?

Thread, joining, adding, wool, fabric, sewing needles, frame, or supports.

What are the properties of “soft” painting?

The properties of soft painting are smooth, delicate, blurred, and little contrast.

What do we associate with it?

We associate puppies, fur, clouds, blankets, silk, skin, plush, feathers, butter, and kisses with it.

How does “soft” relate to painting?

It relates to painting because we blend things softly and blur parts of our paintings. We use “soft” qualities to give a feeling of being warm.

What makes a painting soft? Could you inflate it?

Stuffing, cotton, plush, plastic, packing tape, newspaper, old pillow, blanket, velvet, and a towel.

Progress shots today from our painting as an object piece. Pat and I were originally indecisive on what to do, thinking about just weaving pieces of our leftover canvas paper into something. However, as we started picking up fabrics and exploring old artworks, we became more experimental. We tore off an old painting from these stretcher bars and proceeded to place our canvas paper on the top half of said bars. We originally wanted to drop paint, but decided to make some marks instead. I placed the red mark first, and then Pat did the yellow and blue, interpreting and experimenting based off of the first mark. We knew we wanted to incorporate the fabric we grabbed somehow, but we weren’t sure if we wanted it in front of, or behind, the canvas. Once we finished our marks, we realized that we kind of wanted to paint the stretcher bars as well, but using a masking technique to leave some areas still bare.

Once we had all of that, we hung it on the wall and started rearranging the fabric in different ways to see what was working but quickly realized it was missing *something*. We stepped back and remembered that we originally discussed adding canvas paper to the back and painting a yellow line across. Instead of doing this, we decided to cut pieces of canvas paper and simply lay them across the backside of the canvas, stapling them to be secure. We went back and forth on whether or not we should paint these strips but ultimately decided it looked and felt better without it. After the paint dried, we reinterpreted how we could lay the fabric over the front — leading to the final two shots on here (one full and one detail) and our final piece.

Warm & Cool Colour Painting Progress + Class Discussion

Class Discussion:

During our class discussion, we learned about what constitutes a painting, when a painting is not a painting, and how images find us. We learned that a painting is any artwork created with something you can paint with or paint on. Examples of what we can paint with or paint on can be seen in the first image posted above. For when a painting is not a painting, we said that this is when something doesn’t exist or even when an artist says so. For how images find us, we choose some of the following examples including the internet, social media, billboards, magazines, TV, photos, street art, ads, etc. By discussing some of these questions, we get to have a sense of how found images influence our day to day lives.

Warm & Cool Colour Progress:

During the last class session, we started to plan out our warm & cool colour paintings. For my painting in particular, I choose the following found image of a close up of a chicken:

For my painting, I plan on making it super colorful, creative, and unique. I will insert a picture of my painting progress below. I can’t wait to see how my painting turns out when it’s finished.

Field Trip to the NYPL Picture Collection & the MoMA Museum ~Wednesday November, 20th~

Overall I had a great time during our class field trip to the New York Public Library Picture Collection and the MoMA museum. I will break down our trip to NYC below.

NYPL Picture Collection:

Our first stop was to the New York Public Library Picture Collection. This place was super pretty inside and was fully decorated for the holiday season. When we first walked into the Picture Collection, there were rows upon rows of folders filled with super interesting and unique photos from many different decades and periods in time. Each of the folders had different categories listed on them. Some of the different categories included food, illustrations, animals, cartoons, etc. The two folders that I looked at were chickens and cats. I will include some of the pictures that I took of some of the pictures below. I cannot wait to go back to the Picture Collection.

The MoMA Museum:

The second stop on our trip was the MoMA museum. At the museum there were tons of different and unique pieces. Each of them had a different theme and feeling to them. It was interesting to see how each of the artists used different techniques to create their pieces such as using warm toned paints or creating collages with different images. The MoMA museum was super enjoyable and I cannot wait to come back again. I will insert some of my favorite pieces below.

Sally Smart ~ Photo Collage Artist

Sally Smart was born in 1960 in Quora, South Australia. She currently lives and works in Melbourne, Victoria.

Sally studied at the Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne, Master of Fine Arts, (1991) Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne Post-graduate Diploma in Painting (1988).

Smart is well known for her large-scale collage installations. Her works range in media, including felt cut-outs, painted canvas, drawings, screen-printing, printed fabric and photography. Smart’s work is held in a number of collections, including major state galleries in Australia and internationally, and corporate and private collections.

Her work identifies with the art practices of Cubism, Dada, and Surrealism.

Reflection:

Overall Smart’s artwork is very unique and interesting. By combining images, she is able to successfully create a whole new piece of art. I love her use of color and the way she uses different brush strokes to create a feeling of a textured surface. Her artwork is very bold and abstract. I also love her use of painting of different inorganic shapes and lines. Her use of shadows also adds to her pieces as well.

Kylie Banyard ~ Image Artist

Born in 1974 in Sydney, Australia. Kylie Banyard currently lives and works in Bendigo Victoria, Australia.

She is a PhD graduate of University of NSW Art & Design, Sydney, and is now a lecturer at La Trobe University in Bendigo.

Her works are mainly paintings that intersects with photography, video, sculpture, and immersive architectural spaces.

The images that she uses combine historical references with fantasy, drawing on ideas from the past and bringing them into the present.

For many of her pieces, she gathers different black and white photographs and makes collages using them. In addition, she adds vibrant colors to her collages and makes her artwork pop and come to life. Her main teacher was Anni Albers. Albers described Kylie Banyard’s art pieces and works as “enjoyment of colours, form, surface contrasts and harmonies: a tactile sensuousness”.

Banyard wants her artwork to express things in a different light. She mentions that she makes her artwork from the point of view of the daydreamer. She even uses photographs that she has taken along her travels. She takes her photographs and changes the overall space of them to give them a sense of fantasy.

Reflection:

Kylie Banyard’s paintings look super interesting and creative. I love her use of color and how she adds in her highlights and shadows. Her process of making her paintings is also very interesting to me. How she uses her own photographs as a starting point to her pieces. She is able to manipulate the different spaces that she captures on her camera and is able to twist them into portraying a sense of both wonder and imagination.

Word Painting Progess Update! ~Dipity~

Reflection:

Overall, I have been enjoying doing this painting exercise. At first I was hesitant of which word I was going to use. But by process of elimination and feedback from the class, I was able to choose the word DIPITY. My original word was going to be serendipity, but after creating the 3D model, it would have been a lot of extra work involved if I had chosen that particular word. I enjoyed sketching out and filling in my word with light acrylic paint. Also, I really enjoyed painting the background of the canvas and achieving a perfect smooth base color. I am excited to see how my painting turns out in the very end of this exercise.

First Class on Word Painting

- For our next 5 classes we are dealing with under painting and creating a word painting overall. For the first class I went through a series of 30 words that I thought sounded very intellectual, appealing to hear and overall simple to create as a painting. Further on, I went down my list and out of all the intriguing words I had on paper, I decided on the word “Hoopla”, funny huh? Well I chose this word for many reasons, the word itself sounds funny and goofy and that’s who I am as a person. I figured doing this word would give a viewer the idea that “WOW this artist is kind of weird huh?”. Anyways, I chose this word and these colors to represent the weirdness and goofyness of the word, actually the word also means excitement, so in my module I chose to do a variety of different sizes for the letters. Some coming towards you and some farther out, even the letter P is backwards purposely to insinuate that this word is so funny and overall kind of, dumb haha. But I am excited to create this into a painting and it will be so much fun, as it was creating the model itself.

John Baldassari

Is an American conceptual artist who tackles with word art, here I present one of his pieces that me, Valerie and Kira found really meaningful. He calls it the way it is presented, which is as “pure beauty”, he does this using black font and plain background. To many this may seem boring, but to many others it also can be very meaningful, by reading this art piece you can create your own definition of what pure beauty is and what it could mean to you. There’s so many different interpretations. As for what my group members and I created we did this:

In this piece we wanted to imitate what Baldassari did in “pure beauty” by using the dull background, one word and one font color. In this case we chose the word “Gunk” because we decided that word sounded the most appealing, which is contradicting considering the definition of the word itself, but since we used this word we chose the dark umber paint and we also used a pasting medium to create this messy gunky look to the font itself, just to have a bit more fun with it. And here is what a little close up of the texture is:

Agatha Gothe-snape is an Australian artist born in 1980. Some of her more famous works include POWERPOINTS, a lifelong series that she continually works on. With these pieces, she draws influence from concrete poetry, color field painting, and the emergence of the internet. Gothe-snape often explores emotional and historical responses to the reception of art and has exhibited in some major international biennales.

Tauba Auerbach Painting Inspiration + Group’s “YES” Painting + Group Painting Explanation

We looked at the way she uses a light wash background in some of her pieces. We mixed up a pink salmon color and brushed it onto the piece of paper while also using water to make it look more washed out. We then looked at the way she chooses and portrays her words for her pieces. She chose the word “OK” for one of her paintings, so we decided to go with the word “YES” for ours. We thought of different ways someone might say yes, and also made up some of our own yes pronunciations as well. We observed how Tauba enjoys using different colored text, so we used a similar color scheme to create our particular piece.

In class on Monday we began our first lesson for our word painting assignment. We were first told to get into pairs and quickly research 2 artists that were displayed on the PowerPoint slide. The 2 artists that my group got were Tauba Auerbach and Jenny Holzer.

Word Painting Inspiration

Tauba Auerbach 

Tauba Auerbach was a visual contemporary artist. Her earlier works were on word painting and calligraphy. I found it interesting that she grew up in a family of theatre designers. This impacted her love for art. Below I added a photo of an example of her earlier works with word art that lists “okay” vertically with different colored letters on them that are spelled different ways. She also believes that a fourth dimension of color exists. I find that very interesting that she looks at colors from a dimension point of view.

Jenny Holzer

Jenny Holzer is a neo-conceptual artist. Her works are using language as her art. She makes artworks in public spaces with words. I like how she projects words onto public spaces to make statements. My favorite works that she’s made is like the one I posted below where she uses light bars to illuminate words. I like how she comes across authoritatively in some of her works. I also liked her Times Square installation with her statements that don’t seem to make sense at first but when you read them it forces you to stop and engage with it. For example, in her “Laments” collection, there are statements that suggest things but by the simple combinations of words that your brain skims it makes you stop and double-take to see what it was you read.

My partner and I decided to replicate a painting by Tauba Auerbach where it shows a washed grey background with colorful letters on top. It spells “OKAY” in different ways. We put our own twist on it by deciding to do the word “YES” using that same technique. We wrote “Yes, Yez, Yesh, Yas, and Yassss” to make it more relevant to Pop culture as well. 

Towards the end of the class, it was our turn to begin planning to create our own word paintings from the words we chose before coming into class. We received feedback from our peers and chose our words. The word I chose was “Jimmies”. Many people know this word as “sprinkles” and do not know it may have a double meaning. Some say only the true “Jimmies” are the brown sprinkles and that it may have started with a negative connotation to the minstrel song “Jim Crow” from the 1830′s. During this time, people started to refer to African-Americans as “Jim Crow”. Jim Crow was a slang term for anything having to do with African Americans therefore, people believe that it is directly related to the word “Jimmies”.
