The Final Four

The Color of White

I particularly enjoyed making this painting. It was one of my favorites. I loved shading the items and making them come to life.

Word painting using glazing (acrylic and oil paint)

I think this was one of my most challenging paintings. The first reason is because it suffered damages that needed to be fixed and the other was that the colors were very light. Glaze after glaze I tried not to darken it as much but I am happy with the end result.

Warm cool color invention (acrylic paint)

This painting was challenging because I had to create the shadows with cool colors. I let a little bit of the warm red show through the background to make the subject pop. I think I grew as an artist after doing this because it is by far the best portrait I have ever painted of a person. The more I look at it, the more it’s giving me the “Joker” vibes!

Group Painting as Object (Woven Painting)

I enjoyed making this painting with my partner. Originally, we made a Christmas tree out of the strings but from our feedback we decided to take away the seasonal painting energy it was giving. We redid all of the strings and recreated our woven painting. I enjoy the shadows that the lines give off by the way the light hits the strings. Now I look at it and it reminds me of Stranger Things!

Reflection:

Overall, I enjoyed this class this semester. It was very challenging for me but I do feel that I grew as an artist. It has inspired me to make more of my own canvases and paint more with oil paint.

Group: Painting as Object Process

My partner and I decided to put our materials together to create a “woven” painting. We came up with a few ideas of how we wanted to put it together:

1. Using fabric and all the thread we had to create an intricate woven painting.

2. Taking out the entire center of the canvas and weaving all of the material together over it.

3. Using the needles we brought as supports on the ends of the stretcher bars to weave the threads together.

4. Create an image by weaving thread.

5. Using paint to dip the strips into and combining it with fabric to weave over the stretcher bars.

6. Using pipe cleaners to weave with the dyed Rafia.

We ultimately decided to use the Christmas lights, canvas, and thread to create our woven painting. We cut even holes across the canvas and then pushed the lights into each hole. We then secured the lights with tape. We ran into some problems with the lights splitting the canvas too much but that was quickly fixed with tape. Then, through the inspiration of Lucio Fontana, we sliced the canvas all the way down horizontally between the lights to create space to weave the thread. It took a lot of putting things down and seeing if we wanted to go in that direction. Also, trying to see what thread we wanted to use. We weaved the thread through the canvas and created a box shape with red thread. Then, using multi-colored (green, yellow, and blue) thread we weaved it into the already weaved (red) string to create an image of a tree. We are still in the process of getting the lights to work and finding out if we wanted to add anything to it still. This is what it looks like so far.

Lucio Fontana

We found our inspiration of slicing the canvas from Lucio Fontana. He is known as the founder of Spatialism. His paintings of slicing canvas were made to create a break in the two-dimension plane. He stated, “I do not want to make a painting; I want to open up space, create a new dimension, tie in the cosmos, as it endlessly expands beyond the confining plane of the picture”. I particularly enjoy how he presents these slashes in his canvases. By using solid colors with these slashes, the slashes become the primary focus of the artwork.

Painting as Object Artists/Inspiration

Jim Lambie

He is an artist who likes to create visual stimulation. He creates these artworks to create a intense psychological space. I particularly enjoy how the result of these artworks come out at the end. I like how he uses the color to map out the space and then overlaps them creating shapes.

Floor Installation:

Richard Tuttle

He is actually from Rahway, NJ. He created a series of stretched canvases to move away from traditional methods of painting. He explored how stretching, moving, and nailing canvas could affect how the canvas looks. I enjoy how he uses canvas and dyes them to create his artworks. He creates these odd shapes with different colors that look visually appealing. Some of them look awkward because of the way the canvas is stretched.

What are the properties of “woven” painting?

The properties of woven painting are weaving, alternating, crossing over, intertwining, pattern, and squares.

What do we associate with it?

We associate weaving, knitting, and fabric with it.

How does “woven” relate to painting?

A canvas is woven.

What makes a painting woven?

Thread, joining, adding, wool, fabric, sewing needles, frame, or supports.

What are the properties of “soft” painting?

The properties of soft painting are smooth, delicate, blurred, and little contrast.

What do we associate with it?

We associate puppies, fur, clouds, blankets, silk, skin, plush, feathers, butter, and kisses with it.

How does “soft” relate to painting?

It relates to painting because we blend things softly and blur parts of our paintings. We use “soft” qualities to give a feeling of being warm.

What makes a painting soft? Could you inflate it?

Stuffing, cotton, plush, plastic, packing tape, newspaper, old pillow, blanket, velvet, and a towel.

Cool Painting Process

I’ve started the process of my cool painting and I decided to use cool colors like blue, purple, and maybe green. I haven’t decided how I am going to use the colors on the face yet. However, I like how it has been coming along. It needs some more refining still, because some margins are a bit off. It has been a struggle trying to get the face just right but I feel like I am getting there. I just need to adjust and fix the proportions. I like that the oil paint has been easier to blend and use. This will help me later when I need to blend shadows of the face.

Combination or Collage Imagery Artists

Sally Smart

She is known for her large installations of collages. She uses different materials to create her collages such as felt cut-outs or painted canvas. She likes to create connections between the body and culture. Also, she creates her paintings with feminist views. I enjoy how she creates people with different clothes using collages.

Richard Hamilton

Hamilton was the founder of Pop art. He dropped out of high school to attend night art classes. Laying the basis for Andy Warhol’s art. His art was aimed towards connecting fine art and consumer culture. I particularly enjoy his collage imagery that creates a space with the way he collages images. The collages are almost seamless as well which creates this spacial view of a place with a person in it.

More about James Rosenquist

James Rosenquist was originally a commercial billboards and theatre marquee painter. He quit his job after witnessing two of his coworkers fall fatally from a scaffold. After, he begin his fine art career. He integrated his work as a commercial billboard painter into his artwork. Some people compare his work to Andy Warhol in that they both use popular culture. I enjoy how he uses color, line, and shape in his works.

Field Trip

The New York Public Library

The keywords I chose to search were emotion and religion. I found many amazing photos from my search. Out of all of them I chose the first one as the one for my warm+cool painting project. I find his face interesting as you can’t exactly tell the emotion he is feeling or what the sign he is holding means. I plan on using blue and green tones to emphasize on his facial expression.

Warm & Cool Colour Painting Progress + Class Discussion

Class Discussion:

During our class discussion, we learned about what constitutes a painting, when a painting is not a painting, and how images find us. We learned that a painting is any artwork created with something you can paint with or paint on. Examples of what we can paint with or paint on can be seen in the first image posted above. For when a painting is not a painting, we said that this is when something doesn’t exist or even when an artist says so. For how images find us, we choose some of the following examples including the internet, social media, billboards, magazines, TV, photos, street art, ads, etc. By discussing some of these questions, we get to have a sense of how found images influence our day to day lives.

Warm & Cool Colour Progress:

During the last class session, we started to plan out our warm & cool colour paintings. For my painting in particular, I choose the following found image of a close up of a chicken:

For my painting, I plan on making it super colorful, creative, and unique. I will insert a picture of my painting progress below. I can’t wait to see how my painting turns out when it’s finished.

Trip To NY - 11/20/19

We went to the MOMA and NY Public Library on Wednesday the 20th.

I started my trip by meeting up with my group. It took us an extra 15 minutes to catch up to the main class because of multiple hilarious hiccups along the way, but that’s what made the day great. Great times shared with great people.

Finally reaching the NY Public Library, I was able to find a few interesting pictures for my next painting. However, one stuck out to me the most:

This photo is actually the cover for a film called Rescued From An Eagles Nest. This was considered one of the oddest scenes in cinema for a very long time. The image has a gothic vibe. It’s very unsettling. The composition is also very interesting. You have this natural landscape in the background with these two dominating bodies in the center of the frame. They both share equal space, and both represent opposite sides of the spectrum.

The child is small, pure, yet the eagle is huge, pitch black, and menacing.

I knew the second I took a look at that photo, it was the one I had to paint.

After the NY Public Library, we went to the MOMA. I took a few photos of some interesting pieces that caught my eye.

This pole especially, was a favorite. This definitely looks like something I plan to install into my own apartment.

Overall, I loved the art, but also the dynamic of our group. We were all able to separate, enjoy the art on our own, and then regroup to talk about individual pieces we enjoyed. I really enjoyed the trip, and I’m actually upset that it was our last one. It’s always fun to be a creator, and go look at things other people create with other people that also create. It’s freakin’ meta.

I had an awesome time!

James Rosenquist & Found Image Works

Rosenquist was an American painter who was interested in pop culture in the media. He was interested in people who “advertise themselves”. I think he was also investigating how advertisements are used to influence and impact the way consumers view figures in the mass media. The face from his “President Elect” painting was from Kennedy’s campaign poster. His face was next to a stale piece of cake and half of a vehicle. This was to show how the media uses advertisements to package the idea and marketing influence of the three items to consumers.

Class Discussion

In class, we began by discussing several different questions:

What constitutes an object/What are its qualities?

An object can be anything that takes up weight or space. It can also be used.

What constitutes a painting/What are its qualities?

A painting can be anything that can create an image and be held by a support. For example, the way people use bottle caps to make portraits of people.

When is painting not a painting?

I also believe that a painting is not a painting only when the artist claims so.

When an artist uses a ‘found’ image in their work, what does it mean?

A “found image” is an image that is not one’s own. This means it was created by someone else and cannot be an image they created.

What are some ways in which we might find an image?

One can use the internet or the library.

What are the limitations of these ways?

The limitations of these ways are that the internet does not contain all of the photos that exist on the topic one is looking for. A limitation of the library is that one needs to know the right keywords to find the images they want.

How are images transmitted to us (how do pictures find us)?

Images are transmitted to us through public advertisements and social media.

How might they affect us?

They might influence how we feel or think about ourselves. It can also influence the choices we make.

What are the qualities of certain image types – for example, a personal photograph, an instagram, an accidental iphone photo, an image in an ad in a magazine, an image accompanying an article in the newspaper?

A personal photograph may be of clear quality compared to an Instagram post that has a filter on it. An accidental I-Phone photo may be blurry and an image in an ad in a magazine may be edited. An image accompanying an article in the newspaper may be in black and white or sepia. It could also be more pixielated.

Word Painting Process

I made my paper construction model of what I wanted the word “Jimmies” to look like. I decided to keep the lighter colors to make it ironic. How a word that is supposed to be so dark was actually meant to be something light. I wanted to make the letters look as if they were sprinkled and then scrambled two of the letters. I kept neutral shades as “Jimmies” are supposed to be chocolate sprinkles.

As the classes went by, I think I walked into this project thinking it would be simple and instead it was a challenge for me. First, the challenge was getting all of the colors just right. Also, the fact that the colors I was using were so opaque that it started to cover the sketch I had made of the letters.

I also realized that my background color dried so much darker than I thought it would which actually set me back. I had to redo the entire background again. Now I’ve started the glazing process using color and medium to create shadows or depth in each letter. It has been a struggle for me there too as I am also trying to get the right shades and use the right amount of oil and pigment. I will post an update here as soon as possible.

Word Painting Inspiration

Tauba Auerbach

Tauba Auerbach was a visual contemporary artist. Her earlier works were on word painting and calligraphy. I found it interesting that she grew up in a family of theatre designers. This impacted her love for art. Below I added a photo of an example of her earlier works with word art that lists “okay” vertically with different colored letters on them that are spelled different ways. She also believes that a fourth dimension of color exists. I find that very interesting that she looks at colors from a dimension point of view.

Jenny Holzer

Jenny Holzer is a neo-conceptual artist. Her works are using language as her art. She makes artworks in public spaces with words. I like how she projects words onto public spaces to make statements. My favorite works that she’s made is like the one I posted below where she uses light bars to illuminate words. I like how she comes across authoritatively in some of her works. I also liked her Times Square installation with her statements that don’t seem to make sense at first but when you read them it forces you to stop and engage with it. For example, in her “Laments” collection, there are statements that suggest things but by the simple combinations of words that your brain skims it makes you stop and double-take to see what it was you read.

My partner and I decided to replicate a painting by Tauba Auerbach where it shows a washed grey background with colorful letters on top. It spells “OKAY” in different ways. We put our own twist on it by deciding to do the word “YES” using that same technique. We wrote “Yes, Yez, Yesh, Yas, and Yassss” to make it more relevant to Pop culture as well.

Towards the end of the class, it was our turn to begin planning to create our own word paintings from the words we chose before coming into class. We received feedback from our peers and chose our words. The word I chose was “Jimmies”. Many people know this word as “sprinkles” and do not know it may have a double meaning. Some say only the true “Jimmies” are the brown sprinkles and that it may have started with a negative connotation to the minstrel song “Jim Crow” from the 1830′s. During this time, people started to refer to African-Americans as “Jim Crow”. Jim Crow was a slang term for anything having to do with African Americans therefore, people believe that it is directly related to the word “Jimmies”.

Agatha Gothe-snape is an Australian artist born in 1980. Some of her more famous works include POWERPOINTS, a lifelong series that she continually works on. With these pieces, she draws influence from concrete poetry, color field painting, and the emergence of the internet. Gothe-snape often explores emotional and historical responses to the reception of art and has exhibited in some major international biennales.

For part 1 of our painting exercise, we researched some artists who use text in their work. In regards to the perimeters of the assignment, our paintings should reflect on mood and how the text is played into the context, materials, process, effect and intent.

A great artist to look at is Glenn Ligon, who says “it’s not about me, it’s about we.”

He was born in the Bronx, and is still living and working in NY. His paintings draw of writings and speeches of many diverse figures. Essentially he reveals the ways in which slavery, the civil rights movement, and sexual politics inform our understanding of American society.

Some of his techniques include silkscreening, neon and photography. He layers text in an abstract way we’re it becomes difficult to read but exemplifies the context of layering meaning.

Mel Bochner

is an American conceptual artist. Bochner has devoted much of his career to exploring the medium of words. Not to say Bochner is a writer, exactly. Rather, he engages in something like an abstract aesthetic version of semiotics. Semiotics is the study of symbols; how they are used, what they communicate, and the various ways they might be interpreted. Bochner creates aesthetic phenomena that use symbolic elements such as words in ways unrelated to their usual context. By appropriating common symbols and presenting them as abstractions, Bochner allows viewers the opportunity to interpret these symbols and their context in new ways.
