i knowwww the running joke in the fandom is that obi wan is space jesus, but are we for real glossing over the fact that anakin is LITERALLY space jesus
The fact that the Skywalker saga is about how Space Jesus becomes enslaved to the Space Devil is one of my favourite things about the entire story. It is such a fascinating inversion to have a literal 'Dark Messiah' who suffers for his own sins, but who still retains that 'barest flicker of persistent light' and eventually attains salvation. I love the fact that he must first reclaim his humanity in order to be able to fulfill his 'divine' purpose (aka the fact he sacrifices himself out of unconditional love to destroy the Sith and save the galaxy).
This side of Anakin is one of the most compelling aspects of his story for me, and I agree it is baffling that it is overlooked just because he is not what people expect from a 'saviour' type figure. Being half-human, half-Force, he can be viewed as a fallen angel in the biblical sense as well as a demi-god with tragic flaws in the classical style. Anakin embodies the state of the Force and the state of the galaxy in microcosm. His tale is at once cosmic and deeply personal. It is destruction and creation. The fall and redemption of the human soul. As a a story intentionally created to function as a timeless myth, Anakin's journey from light to darkness and back to the light again ought to be universally relatable. But I suspect that contemporary audiences fear to allow themselves that level of catharsis.
#demi-god!Anakin my beloved#Anakin/Vader is a literal Dark Messiah#and that fact gives me so many thrills and chills#i wish more people would stop hand-wringing and moralising over Star Wars#and just enjoy the inherent DRAMA of this Space Opera
