ABOUT THE HEALTH AND THE KINDNESS
When we are at the university, studying medicine, nursing, respiratory therapy or whatever is the specialization, the point in common is that we have to work with human life.
Always our teachers gives to us a lot of protocols to follow in moments of emergency or to do a specific procedure. But, when we are in the real life and with the patient in front of us, we realized that we are not prepared to affront situations like see a husband crying for his wife, or a mother screaming because her baby is dying, or when one patient die in our hands. How can a teacher teach a sequence of attitudes to affront those all mixed feelings? It is impossible.
Other thing that interferes with an ethical decision is the laws in each country, we have a professional cards who is the document to allow us to work and that demonstrate that we are a qualified professionals. Those laws tell us what we can do or what we cannot. The problem is when the legislation fight with our ethical criteria of each professional.
We as a respiratory therapist have the responsibility of work with a very important feeling like is the dyspnea. When patient has the incapacity to breath they get a distress and it makes that they cannot be in calm, which make our work more difficult.
In moments like this the respiratory therapist has a role more important than the doctors, because we have to use the psychology to: first calm down the patient, and second get that he recovers the normal respiratory rate, which is more difficult to do than to say.
When we finally managed to calm down the patient, we have to deal with the oxygen therapy, with needles, or at worst with the family. We can show this more frequently when the patient is a child.
But no matter which is the work, the health personnel has to be very kind, regardless how is the personal situation at home, or how is your mood, is fundamental to be kind because we are treating sick people who have a very weak mood, then the empathy has to be the most important quality that we must get.
This point becomes field of heath an art, when is necessary to mix all the medical knowledge with the social sciences and with the education and use all our creativity to resolve many situation even when we don’t have all the tools to do it.
