Writing an Op-Ed Essay - Draft
Designing our financial spaces toward  inclusion
Much like every space where interaction and exchange occur, financial spaces are designed to be a certain way. Perhaps we donât notice it because we have gotten so used to it; but the way things seem is strategicâbranding is about perception, and for large financial institutions in the philippines, theyâve made sure you know from the get go that you donât belong in their circle.
From the intimidating application forms and requirements; to the strategically designed offices, mobile applications, the imagery and the kinds of people that appear in their advertisementsâall of these contribute to building a construct that only some people deserve formal financial services (among other things) and the rest who donât qualify⊠well just have to find another way. In designing these spaces a certain way, and in letting them be because that is just âhow things are,â we as a population have collectively decided who to let in and who to keep out.
This is only one of the few things Microfinance is trying to solve. At its core, microfinance seeks to provide basic banking and insurance services to smaller communities who otherwise would not have access to these because larger financial institutions are not only designed to be intimidating and exclusive, but their requirements, rates, and mobile digital services claiming to be âaccessibleâ are actually far less accessible to the people outside of the circle they intend to serve.(1)
âAmong the main considerations of account holders in opening an account were: amount required to open an account (44%), maintaining balance (32%), documentary requirements (29%), and dormancy charges (17%).â Â â Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas via AdvocatesTV
A proper savings account, an insurance account, a channel for fund transfersâthese are the things some of us probably use on a daily basis without even realizing these are the very things that some people do not even have access to.
In an interview with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas after the release of their 2019 Financial Inclusion Survey (FIS) results, they said that "[l]ack of awareness is the main reason for not using mobile phone or the internet for financial transactions, followed by lack of trust, weak signal or slow internet connection, and preference to transact at the bank or ATM.â (2) (3)
There is a need to design financial spaces without excluding anyone. Explicitly, this means that unless larger financial institutions come up with methods for easier access to the services through transparency and a more inclusive client approach; the country needs to pay attention to and empower, through strategic initiatives (4) and national scale legislation (5), microfinance institutions who are focused on making these services accessible to low-income Filipino citizensâeffectively establishing a space for the very people excluded from accessing their rights to financial stability.

I tried to look at an alternative news source to see how different they angle their writing from the ones I usually go for... this is ABS CBN vs. PTV News on the latest Pulse Asia Survey results showing President Duterte with high approval rates this year.
An Open Call for Partnerships and Sponsorships: Microfinance for the Filipino Youth
Greetings of peace to everyone who is reading this!
I am Mary Abigail M. Bungay, a junior BFA Information Design student, minoring in Development Management at Ateneo de Manila University. I write this letter and address it to everyone who may have the chance of reading to put forward the advocacy of microfinance to the Filipino youth of our rural regions.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed so many layers of not just inequality, but also unpreparedness for emergency situations. This pandemic is not the only emergency we will ever face as a nation. With this, we are called as a nation to respon and equip our youth, sow the seeds today for a future we will be thankful we invested in.
In line with this advocacy, I belong to a group of development communicators who aim to make this advocacy pushed forward on a national level. We have two initially projected ideas for initiatives, and we would love to work with a team that can help us reach our goal of being heard in the whole country:
Information Campaign (Link to the website and/or finalized proposal)
Legislative Policy campaign (Link to the website and/or finalized proposal)
With this, we will be needing your help! This is an open call for development communicators, community organizers, designers, website developers, material content writers, etc. We want to work with you!

[Ways to connect]
On top of being an invitation, this is also an open petition to prominent figures in the Filipino microfinancing landscapeâ Microinsurance MBA Association of the Philippines (MiMAP), RIMANSI Philippines, and Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) MBAâto humbly ask to support this project. Our team has sent formal petition letters to your kind offices; we are hoping for your kind offices.
Yours sincerely, for the nation.
Logical Fallacies HW/Guess that Fallacy!
1. I donât like to agree with her arguments because her appearance in the video - her clothes, books, and glasses - made it all look fake and pretentious.
2. We conducted an internet connection survey among students of Sitio Rizal. Results showed they had stable connection, therefore it must be the same for their neighboring sitios Andres and Apolinario.
3. Either you give up your dream for a more practical job, or you live off the streets for the rest of your life.
4. Rody: Why are you using gasoline as a disinfectant?! Donât you know that can kill you? Bong: Wait a minute, you use gasoline too! Why should I listen to you?

Logical Fallacies
1. She could not lead a country because she is too emotional.
2. He went out of the house then got infected with COVID 19. He, therefore, acquired the virus because of public exposure. Â
3. Person 1: A lot of people visited the opening of Manila Bay white sand. They did not observe social distancing and wear proper protective gear. It undoubtedly increased the transmission of the virus among the people who went there.
Person 2: So what you are saying is that the people who visited Manila Bay are going to get infected and are going die?
4. Dad:Â You are too young to be drinking.
Son:Â You drink too, then, why shouldnât I?Â
5. Person 1: You just committed a fallacy.

LRay Villafuerte: It is clear as day that Congressman Teves has launched this chicanery on the basis of mere hearsay as part of the sinister ploy hatched by the Velasco camp, in cahoots with former Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez,to wreck Speaker Cayetanoâs commitment to fast-track the approval of the 2021 GAA. Albee Benitez: You accuse Cong. Teves of making accusations based on hearsay but what you are doing is worse. Totally baseless and a figment of your overactive and defensive imagination. If you have nothing to hide, explain to the Filipino people why the national government has to shoulder the construction of your Provincial Capitol that costs more than P420M?

You got a death wish or something doing just that?â    C: (Internal screaming)
3. E: âOooh I love your two-toned hair color and your make-up! I bet youâre just like those e-girls on TikTok who dance and stuff. Iâll follow you, whatâs your @?â   F: ââŠI donât even have a TikTok?â

Logical Fallacies Activity
First Fallacy
Masy: The government should really pay attention to controlling the cases of COVID-19 in the country! It is affecting peopleâs mental health and economic stability. The priority should be contact tracing and mass testing, not some beautification of Manila Bay that is just trying to distract us from the real problem here!
Denire: The beautification of Manila Bay is a project for the World Coastal Clean up day, donât you think having beautiful to look at can help the massesâ mental health in general? Look at them appreciate the view!
Masy: But gathering them there together there is a public health hazard in the first place! Not to mention, dolomite sand has been proven to have adverse effects on aquatic life!
Denire: The military was there to assist the gathering, didnât some people wanted quarantine lifted anyway to go back to their economic activities? The effects of dolomite has been proven false by the DENR itself!
Second Fallacy
State University students: The governmentâs priority should be its citizens health, well-being, and economic stability! Stop the unnecessary spending on things that we donât need!
Fallacious Argument: But donât you benefit from the governmentâs services anyway? You study for free because of the government! So stop saying anything against the institution that funds your education!
Third Fallacy
Would you rather have beautiful white sand on Manila Bay or the stinky garbage its always been pestered with? Progress is progress! âWag puro nalang reklamo!
The wonderful world of Twitter
Prompt
The prompt for this journal is as follows from one of our module pages:
This is our Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin, Jr., who is better known as Teddy Boy Locsin, Jr. His Twitter Account is below.
As the country's premier diplomat, Sec. Locsin is the face of the Philippines on the global stage as he represents and symbolizes our values and beliefs as a nation. As defined by Dictionary.com, a diplomat is
a person appointed by a national government to conduct official negotiations and maintain political, economic, and social relations with another country or countries.
a person who is tactful and skillful in managing delicate situations, handling people, etc.
In light of the above definitions, read the tweet of Secretary Locsin dated 27 July 2020:
Journal
Here are my thoughts on the matter.
What is or are your reaction/s to the above?
I am fairly new to the world of dev and diplomacy, although my major of course looks at realities, we do so from a certain lens and sometimes we as designers are prone to focusing on the craft sometimes more than the realties around usâthat should not be the case and thatâs also why I am taking a minor in Dev. First of all the fact that he uses Twitter as his main channel of communication to the public is questionable. Social media is not a bad channel, itâs just for someone in his position, Twitter should just be a touchpoint of his role as ambassador, unlike any other Twitter account where one can freely just Tweet whatever they want to say.
What are issues that matter in development?
In your journal, explore a number of questions about your planned advocacy and some of the problems it is facing.Â
As you think about your advocacy, consider any of the following issues that concern you. If your biggest concerns aren't here, be sure to add them to your journal.
Financial literacy, housing, and child internet protection are our top 3.
Some of the types of writing that are often used to address issues of significance are:
Petitions Letters to government officials Letters to the newspapers, magazines, and news websites.
Look up some of these materials. Keep in mind the specifics of your chosen advocacy and its community, whose attention you need, and how you'll get that attention.
Petitions
I feel like Iâm quite familiar with this since I work for Sanggu and the student government writes some petitions lobbying for the concerns of the students to be addressed by the administration of the Loyola Schools.
Letters to Government Officials
I once attended a workshop on political communication that recommended writing to government officials, especially those in the House or the Senate, to champion a certain bill for a certain advocacy.
Most recent that campaign I know of that used this technique was during the voting for the passing of the anti-terror bill, activists left and write were propagating sample letters, templates, for everyone and anyone to use to send to their municipality representatives to not vote for the passing of the notorious bill. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
Letters to newspapers, magazines, and news websites....
Iâve never had the chance to work with publications before, does anyone have an experience? How was it like?
Questions on Definitions of Communication for Development
After getting a lot of terms mixed up, here is my attempt in understanding the definition of Communication for Development.
Do lend your ears and offer what you have to say as I am new to this. I tried to make sense of it from where the confusion starts, so from my conference with my groupmates and the questions that were formed is where the starting point will be.
For this intro activity...
I was group mates with Nina, Kyle, Dana. I didn't know them from outside this class since this is my first DEV course for a minor. I am from BFA ID. They were very welcoming and definitely eased my worries entering my first DS class.Â
I had a lot of questions...
Not that development or communication were entirely new encounters for me (Iâve heard of them before), but this is the first time I sat down and read about them, especially in the context of development studies and surround by DS students.
There are more questions than answers right now, even after Iâve reviewed the readings. Treat this post as my most raw and initial processing of these definitions and new concepts to me. Iâll definitely go back to this post throughout the course to see how much Iâve really understood.
Iâll focus on my most burning questions so as not to make the post too long, but will try to address the other questions and reflect on them in separate posts maybe.
ON QUEBRAL AND CHATTERJEE
âIn working towards specified development goals, the creativity of the writer, the broadcaster, the performer, the graphic artist, the director and all those associated with the art-related side of the old and new media can make the difference between pedestrian, and therefore ineffective, communication and sensitive, and therefore more meaningful communication.â
Coming from an FA major and minoring in DS, I was very much intrigued to find this in the reading. If this is what we claim true, I wondered and also remembered prompts from my own FA classesâwhat are the telling points of good and nuanced communication for development when it is translated to the arts? How do we hit the mark without being tone-deaf? Other than consultations and listening to the real stories of stakeholders, how do we amplify voices using imagery and art without resorting to sounding like a generic charitable feel-good initiative?
Taking cues from the readings, one can deduce that consultation and consensus in itself is not a simple task especially in the topic of development for marginalized and vulnerable communities. From the readings, we are introduced to the top-down approach, where institutions have already set goals and standards of development and communication is based on theory. We are also introduced to the very opposite of thatâwhich, in my opinion, is also a better approachâa grassroots campaign that listens and looks for action points from hearing the voices of the people themselves.
As people who have the potential to have a career with communication for development, it is important to determine first what we are communicating. Whyâs and howâs are important, of course, but from what the readings have emphasized, perhaps we only think we know what to say. For all we know, the people we are talking to already know and have repeatedly heard of whatever suggestions, campaigns, and initiatives we want to proposeâhighly likely because they are the most familiar with their crises than anyone could ever be. So the what, should come from them. The development communicator can merely assist.Â
I am definitely reminded of similar lessons weâve had in ID and it was very interesting to me how as communication tools, human-centered design and communication for development share the same perspective. Most designers can fall into the trap of the designer messianic complex, taking statistics at face value tp justify whatever aesthetically pleasing material they already want to produce prior to discerning whether that is indeed the correct design intervention by consulting, again and again, with stakeholders and partners.
I think it is  similar to what Quebral and Chatterjee were referring to when they emphasize two-way communication and empowering grassroots voices. At the end of the day, communicators can find ways and assist, but they will never be the answer. Without, say our personal contribution to assisting communitiesâand even if we do not encounter these communities at allâthey will continue to brave through their struggles and eventually find a way to make it through. If their struggles have formed without us, so can their liberation.
In your journals, take a moment to write out what your writing aspirations are.
