Hi all! If you haven’t encountered me yet: I’m Mary Jane and I decided to make default replacement hair for TS3. I was inspired by Firefoxsims3, with whom I agreed upon a collaboration style. We’ll both make defaults (mostly) out of IfcaSims retextures.
This post is to keep you informed. I will pin it and edit it every time something changes or when I move to a different step in the process. Want to know what’s coming and what is not? Check it here! Of course you may also just ask me anything.
First some things general you need to know:
There is a folder where you can find ALL defaults I made so you don’t have to scroll through all my posts. You can find it here.
Please beware there are multiple versions of some defaults. As with all defaults, you can only have one in game.
These are default replacement hairs, so I recommend putting them in your overrides folder (make sure your resource.cfg is set up correctly)
Firefox and I both do female BG hair, so you can have something to choose from. Again, remember that you can only have one default replacement for the same hair at a time.
Custom hair is much higher in polycount than EA hair. Even the lower poly options are usually a lot higher. Please consider if your system can handle all NPC’s spawning with cc hair before installing them all. If you’re not sure, try installing a few first and play for a bit to see how it goes.
Help, why do the hairs look weird in my game?
What I’m working on now:
Stuff packs & hairs from random packs I skipped. I also want some different hairs for some defaults I already released.
What I won’t do (yet):
BG male hair
Some accessory hairs I will do later on
Note: About the male hair is purely because there are fewer options for male hair replacement. Firefox is going to do the BG male hairs, and I’m afraid that if I also do them now, we’ll have to use duplicates for the EP’s. So I’ll do the BG male hair somewhere in the future, when it is clear what hairs we already used and what options I have for alternative versions.
To-do list:
Find lower poly options for some hairs I already replaced or reduce the polycount for the very high poly hairs I already made default (at the time I didn’t know reducing was an option).
Find a good hair to replace the pigtails with, so that both male and female sims can wear it (and battle the pigtail problem so many of us have in game)
Fix some defaults that have minor problems.
Ambitions, Generations, Showtime, Seasons, Island Paradise, High-End Loft, Fast Lane, 70′s 80′s & 90′s, Movie Stuff, Katy Perry (every pack that is not listed, FireFox will do and maybe I will do too). + Some loose hairs from al EP’s that I skipped for whatever reason.
I just wanted to make a quick post to let you know that I'm currently on a break from making CC. Not because I want to necessarily, but because real life got in the way for a moment and I don't have much time on hands.
Please know that I will be back though! I have not fallen of the earth, haha. I have a bunch of asks etc. lined up that I will get to later, so I'm not ignoring you guys =)
One of the things 'that got in the way'... my bf proposed! And I said yes, so I'm engaged now. Super excited about it!

Did you ever fix your hairs you uploaded to your folder to avoid the pigtails issue? I'm not sure if you fixed them yet thank you if you have

My defaults never had the pigtail issue to begin with, so a fix isn't needed. Some don't age up correctly - they age up in a different default (or EA hair) instead because that's how EA set it up. They literally use the EA default settings because they are, well, defaults! Whenever I revisit a hairstyle and see that it's linked to a different hair for age-up, I of course edit that now. Luckily it's just a very few of them - most EA hairs are set up correctly. But it is never the pigtails =)
My non-default hairs shouldn't have the pigtail problem either because I never cloned from them. I think one or two of my earlier ones age up in the afHairMedBangs hairstyle if I'm not mistaken, because I made those with TSRW. I never used TSRW since I figured that out so most of my hairstyles shouldn't have any age-up issues.
Here's the non-default version of my conversion of Leah Lilliths Bling. This hairstyle was already converted a while ago, but it had some issues so I decided to convert it from scratch.

I got some requests to stop enabling my cc for random, but I personally actually like when they appear randomly and refuse to believe I'm the only weirdo with that preference. So, you'll find two subfolders when you click on my download link, so you can choose if you want the random or not random version.
Hi! So far I believe I have all of you and firefox's default replacements! ^_^ I wanted to know if you'll be making a default replacement with "Simpliciaty Fireproof" hair? It's my go-to hair and of course i'd prefer you or firefox's default replacement for this hair instead. I wasn't sure if you already did this but if you guy did, wcif both of your replacement? These are all updated with my normal updates (improved lods, bumpmap fix if needed etc) and two of them have all the fixes/improvements their adult counterpart has.

I'm very new at making morphs myself, so I'm not sure if I'm the best person to do a guide on it. But ah well, why not.
It won't be soon though (and this time for real lol, last time I made a tutorial almost immediately after I stated the same haha), because my to do list is VERY crowded atm.

Me and my big mouth. In my previous post I stated that the other defaults I wanted to revisit didn't need much work. Don't I know myself yet??? I changed A LOT.
So, instead of crowding the download post with it I'll put everything that changed here. I'll link to this post then. Hopefully that will keep things a little more uncluttered.
For all count that they have my 'normal' updates like reworked and improved LODS, so I'm not gonna state that under every hair anymore.

Converted from scratch from TS4
Improved quality overall. My 13k version looks a lot better than the 16k conversion I used as a default previously. That one appeared to be reduced sloppily and wasn't how the original TS4 hair looked.
Fixed transparency issues on side and back of the head
Bigger scrunchies so that they fit the pigtails better
The comparison you see in the GIFs is between the previous 16k version and my new 13k version (you can click on them to make them a bit bigger)

This hair had one of those floaty mesh scalptextures. I really dislike those and it always bothered me. So, I added a scalptexture (the original EA hair didn't had one, but that was easily solved!) and edited the Mohawk to fit the head.
This comparison is between the original 19k version and my new 10k one.

The shape of this one always seemed a bit off to me. The way it fitted around the head and how it floated in the back. So I did a complete shape edit on this one, morphed it for the fat body and gave it new bone assignments - it's almost a completely different hair now.
I'm super pleased with this one, I think it will be one of my new favorites ^^

No shape edits on this one, I just added a scalptexture because you could see the scalp through the hair otherwise and morphed it for the fat body.

Love this hairstyle, but as with a lot of older hairstyles the shape of the hair didn't really suit me. I just don't like bulbous hairs. Not that it was that bad on this one, it was still very cute, but now I know how to edit it I just did. So, new shape for this one!
So, while the urge to push out some new defaults is very hard to resist, I really need to revisit some older ones that are in desperate need of my improved skill set.
The original default for the afhairMidPigtails needed it the most. I replaced it with LeahLillith's Bling and while it's a lovely hairstyle, it had some issues. It was one of my earlier defaults from when I just started out, so my skillset didn't go beyond replacing meshes and textures.
I always noticed the hair looked a bit crunchy, but at the time thought it was just created like that - and whatever, I still liked it! But now that I finally revisited it, I thought: wait, is the crunchiness maybe caused by a sloppy poly reduction? And yes, it was exactly that!
The original hair for TS4 appeared to be 22k and the conversion I used was 16k. So I decided to convert it from scratch and fix some of the issues it has. Not ready for release yet, but just to show:
Red arrows on the parts that improved the most imo.
And with blonde hair to show better how the transparency issues are mostly gone.
The best part? This comparison isn't even with the new 22k conversion, but my own 13,5k reduction! So it's lower in poly but higher in quality ^^ Very happy about it!
Still need to fix the bumpmap (suddenly noticed it was faulty when I made her hair blonde, lol) and make lower lods. I will also make a non-default out of it, for the people that want this but also use my Pigtails: BE GONE replacement.
After that 3 other earlier defaults that await an update, although what I need to fix/improve with those is less work luckily. Then I'm still not done revisiting, because the basegame CF hairs also need some attention. So I need to convert this pigtail hairstyle to kids also, because I also used the CF version of LL bling for a default.
Lots of work to do!
But, when I've done all that, I'll allow myself to make some new defaults again and also finally work on my (requests) to do list ^^
I'm actually interested with your hair replacement, but I have the retexture of the game's hairs. Is it safe to install both or not?

As they are both default replacements, they conflict with eachother so you can't just put them both in game like that.
Good news is you can have both, BUT you need to do some steps for it to avoid conflicts. Here is the link to the tutorial about it.
I personally use Ifca's EA retextures and OneEuroMutt for BG and World Adventures (ifca hasn't done those yet) because they're in Shock and Shame texture and therefore match my defaults ^^

Edit: what you also can do, is put the EA hair retextures in your packages folder and my defaults in the overrides folder (but NEVER the other way around). That would also work.
I personally recommend to do it with s3pe, though. It's more work but it saves you space and your game unnecessary things to load =)

Please make absolutely sure you've deleted the old files (afHairShortAfro, cuHairShortAfro and puHairShortAfro) to avoid conflicts.
I've done some new things to enable a different hair per gender for the children which can result in some texture glitches on the CF version. I also edited the Cloud Puff to be closer to the scalp. Read more about that all under the cut!
The child version of this hair had a different CASP per gender, but unfortunately they referenced the same mesh. When I replaced one of them, the other one would also be replaced automatically. That's why the boys also had the afro puff before.
Not anymore! I have finally found a way to overcome this. Unfortunately the toddler hair was really a unisex hair (so only one CASP) so I couldn't do the same for them.
It's not foolproof unfortunately. This way of replacing causes texture glitches on townies that already had the hairstyle previous to installing the default. It's different than the 'normal' texture glitches you sometimes see when starting a new save: they don't fix themselves over time and also don't disappear when you change something small on the sim. Instead, you have to manually reapply the hair in CAS on the affected sim.
I did some testing and it only seems to happen to sim already wearing the hair before installing the default. So newly generated sims. sims you make yourself or sims aging up in the hair shouldn't be affected. But, I might have missed something, so please let me know if you encounter texture glitches with the CF hair (besides premades that already had the hairstyle applied, that is). I really want to know!
will you ever upload a a download file that contains all of your default replacements?

This is requested a lot and while I understand why (it would be super convenient), it's a lot of work for me. There are multiple versions of a lot of defaults that can't be merged together, so I will need to make separate merged files and really think through how to do it.
I will never release one file, though, because I think that would get too large. But I will release a merged file per pack eventually (or a bulk folder maybe). It won't be soon though or else I need to constantly update the files and I really don't have the time to also do that on top of working on new defaults - I would probably end up making a lot of stupid mistakes.

My female model uses Ephemera Fresh Skin made non default by Buckley.
The male model uses Fresh Blue by Brntwaffles.
The child model uses Primer by Kurasoberina.
The toddler uses FreckledFruit redux by Kurasoberina
I also use You Are Real by buhudain.
These are the skins my main models use, if you want to know the skin of a specific model just let me know. Might be a different one, I have a lot of skins in game!

Hello, I love your defaults so much and honestly I wouldn't know what to do without them anymore. But, have you ever thought of defaulting hairstyles from the Late night EP? I'm not a big fan of the hairstyles they've created...just a suggestion!
If it’s possible to replace it, you can bet I thought about it! @firefoxsims3 and I split the pack initially, because we both make defaults using the same texture. So Late Night is his to do! But, when I’m done with my share I will probably continue with it because I like making defaults. Then we will just have multiple choices, which isn’t a bad thing imo ^^
