dawnmwithey:
“Much appreciated,” Dawn replied with a small laugh, reaching out for a treat of her own.
“You’re very welcome,” Mary replied with a gentle grin.
thehalfbloodprince:
“No. The ingredients are actually more expensive. Some of them can be quite rare. And this is actually a very complicated potion to brew. It’s not one that you want to mess up. You could end up in a permanent sleep. Now I could care less but I’m sure you do.”
Mary nodded slowly. “Alright. Then I guess I’ll take some of the already prepared potion.”
shacklebolt-kingsley:
“Exactly.” Kingsley smiled broadly, responding to Mary’s comment with a nod of his head. “Different people, different opinions, different foolishness.”
“Precisely,” Mary said with a laugh, nodding along with Kingsley.
shacklebolt-kingsley:
Kingsley nodded in agreement, grinning as he kept dancing with Mary. “But then, what is foolish?”
“Good point!” Mary explained, laughing, “People probably have different definitions of that word.”
dawnmwithey:
“She hears it a lot. Goes to her head,” Dawn explained – her attempt at trying to joke like normal.
“I see,” Mary replied, her smile turning kind. She could tell Dawn’s heart wasn’t completely in the joke, but there was no harm in playing along. “Don’t worry. I’ll keep my compliments to myself.”
thehalfbloodprince:
“Of course. But, a Calming Draught is an extremely complicated potion to brew. One simple mistake and you could end up sleeping for the rest of your life. And I don’t think you want that. I suggest you buy it already brewed to avoid any mishaps. I just made a batch, in fact.” He moved to a shelf a few aisles over. “There’s plenty. Help yourself.”
Mary pursed her lips in thought for a moment, silently considering the potion that Severus had brewed. “Is it more expensive to buy a potion already prepared?” she finally asked, “I’ve been trying to save money...” Ever since Lily had moved out, Mary’s expenses had doubled. She had yet to find a flatmate to replace her best friend, so she’d been paying the rent all by herself.
dawnmwithey:
“Don’t let her hear you say that.”
“And why not?” Mary asked with a somewhat confused smile.
shacklebolt-kingsley:
“Honestly, I prefer way more to just enjoy myself and the music rather than worry about how I look while I dance,” Kingsley said, his laugh joining Mary’s. “I mean, unless you don’t have a reason to do it, watching yourself dancing, well, it kind of spoils the fun.”
“I couldn’t agree more,” Mary replied brightly, “Worrying that you might look foolish ruins the experience.” With that statement, she twirled herself under Kingsley’s arm, grinning as they continued to move with the music.
carolyn-wilkes:
“No? And, tell me, what do you think?” Carolyn leaned a little further toward Mary, a slight teasing note in her voice, a glint of vivid amusement in her eyes. “Ah, a fellow Gryffindor? Nice. And yes, precisely that. Hours and hours of planning and plotting, assessing strategies and tactical analysis,” she joked in return, laughing. “Never a reckless action.”
“Well, honestly, I think you have to be at least a little bit pushy, right? If you’re overly polite all the time, you won’t get many answers. As long as you’re not pushy in a rude or disrespectful way, I think it’s fine,” Mary said with a small shrug, “Us Gryffindors do always look before we leap, don’t we?”
thehalfbloodprince:
“Did you simply come to browse potions? If so, I would recommend reading the label before touching. Potions are not toys.”
Mary put down what she’d been holding and stepped away from the shelf it had been placed on. “Sorry,” she said, although there was a small hint of annoyance in her voice, “I know they’re not toys. I was looking for the ingredients to brew a Calming Draught. Do you have those here?”
shacklebolt-kingsley:
“A mirror, yes, or a video recording,” Kingsley suggested with a shrug. “Maybe a tiny bit,” he said chortling. “I’ve never done it, but don’t dancers practice in front of a mirror?”
“Oh, yes, you’re right,” Mary said, laughing once at her own expense, “I had completely forgotten that. But I’ve never danced professionally, so I’ve never done it, myself.”
mulcimperius:
Now that he was there, Mulciber wasn’t sure what had brought him. Mary Macdonald hadn’t crossed his mind in a long while, but there was something about the October night that had drawn him to her, that propelled him to cross the street and close the distance between them. If only he could figure out what it was.
But he had time.
“Walk with me.” And then, with a twist of his wand, he ensured that she had no choice but to do exactly that.
Inwardly, Mary knew she ought to shout or to reach for her wand as Usi Mulciber drew closer to her. But all she could do was shrink backward, almost as though she were trying to disappear altogether. When he spoke she was only struck with confusion. Why on earth would he think she would walk anywhere with him? But then she felt it—that familiar haziness she hadn’t felt since her fifth year in school—and she knew immediately what was happening.
It was as if she was out of her body. Mary could see and hear what was happening around her, but everything was foggy, like she was gazing through frosted glass. She felt her feet moving of their own accord. There was absolutely nothing she could do now but let it happen.
