Thren: But I don't trust you!

I really fucking wish there was a way for Lemet to survive and still get this AU. What a fucking good boy, what an absolutely gem. Lemet was the best of the best.
“Fen’Harel.” It’s not the name that makes him pause his steps, but the voice. A voice he had not heard in years, despite looking. A voice he hadn’t heard since the eluvians were given to another- the very mistake he was trying to fix.
“Felassan,” he replies with a nod, turning to face his former general. “I never thought you would have hidden from me before.” It hurt to know he had been hiding this whole time. As improbable as it was, Solas had almost hoped Felassan had died, that the silence in communication was for death, that his failure to obtain the eluvians was something he could no longer fix.
However, seeing him now, obviously exhausted, leaning against a tree and trying to hide it, Solas knew better.

Michel drabble coming sometime in the near future. It's a canon drabble but.
Prologue. To give a preview and to make sure this works as an opening?
The door to the Grande Royeaux’s royal box closes behind her and Celene leans against it in the dark hallway, Michel at her side. They knew. They knew about her and Briala, knew that her efforts to help were out of love of one, and they were using the one thing she had kept to herself against her. She only had a few options. If only Briala had heard about Halamshiral days earlier so the matter could be settled by now. If only there would be evidence linking the play to Remache. If only there was a way to save face and keep her lover. She could not be seen to do nothing.
“It seems cruel for Gaspard to use your love of the arts and scholarly sciences such,” comes a soft voice from the shadows. A voice Celene recognized.
Celene stands straighter and turns to face the Divine’s redheaded Ferelden. “Theatres are fickle, Leliana, and I do not believe the university has turned on me.” To Michel she adds. “Collect the others and find out what they know. We are leaving.”
Michel nods and disappears, the rest of the servants in tow behind him, leaving her alone with Leliana. Celene steps closer to the other, allowing the shadows to envelop them both.
Holding up a scroll, Leliana responds. “Many at the university have been asked to write papers on the elves, none of them flattering. One compares them to rabbits, calling them naught but prey animals relying on base instincts. Another claims laying with one akin to laying with animals and an affront to the Maker.”
Celene resisted the urge to look away, keeping her face carefully still. She had been on the throne for twenty years. That was twenty years of helping the theatre, the university, and yet they turn on her for this. Reducing her alliances to the result of a silly girl’s crush backed by the power of the nation. Undermining all the efforts she had made on the throne for one truth. She had wanted nothing from her rule but a period of enlightenment and education and yet Gaspard insisted on trying for his war with every turn. She had to stay ahead of him. Had to do what he wouldn’t expect.
Celene closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. “And what are the Divine’s thoughts?”
Leliana smiles. “The Divine has never had much love of the theatre.” Celene stays silent and Leliana sighs. “The elves are children of the Maker, same as us, and just as deserving of his grace.”
“But the Divine will not be the one to say such,” Celene ventures.
Leliana looked away. Despite knowing she was trained as a bard, Celene thinks this discomfort genuine. “I have…. Been comrade in arms with elves and do not wish to see them hurt. But that is not the matter you requested her support in.” She looks back at Celene, face carefully controlled again. “You asked for her support in calming the templars and the mages.”
“I did.” Celene nods. “And she will give that support?”
Leliana lets out a breath and Celene internally braces for what that means. “She will,” she starts, nodding slowly. “But she needs to know that this matter with the elves is under control.”
Even braced, the words hurt Celene. She knows what Gaspard wants to force her into doing, suspects that even the Divine would agree with the action should she do it. They wanted her to control the elves. They wanted her to control the elves. And she didn’t wish to. But she knew a way to curb in what was needed. “Of course. I would not ask the Divine to keep her affairs in order if I could not do the same. I apologize as I suspect I will not be able to make the ball in Justinia’s name, but I do hope you enjoy it all the same.”
“The Divine understands,” Leliana said and adds in a soft, sad voice “Walk with the Maker’s blessing.”
“Majesty!”
Michel’s voice brings Celene’s head sharply up and she takes a steadying breath, even as her mind is still running too fast looking for options. She pulls herself upright as Michel approaches, the rest of her entourage in tow, including the two she had sent out earlier, returning disheveled. Both of their makeup had been smeared, one as though she had been slapped, the other as though she had been crying.
“What have you found?” She asks, glancing at the darkness, noting Leliana had disappeared.
“Much the same as you saw in the play,” he replies with a grimace. “The crowd is saying you are too….lenient with the elves.” At Celene’s impatience, Michel continues. “They claim you tax them less, that you wish them free from our laws. They say you pity them and have made secret deals with the Dalish to strip nobles of their lands, returning the Dales to the Dalish. They even speak of Briala.” Michel looks at the wall, incapable of continuing while looking at his Empress. “They say she is, ah, that you are…”
“The word is lovers, Michel.” Her words sound weary to even her own ears. Could she try to protest it? Did she want to? It would be relieving to no longer be hiding it but at what cost?
“Yes Majesty, that is what they are saying.” Michel’s fists were clenched at his sides, offended at her behalf and Celene wonders how loyal even Michel would be should he know the truth. How much would she lose? “I would be happy to go back out there and silence them-”
“And give rise to many more whispers, no, my champion. If the people think I am too soft, I only have but two options.”
Two options. She could go burn Halamshiral to the ground as Gaspard would like her to, most likely losing Briala in the process. It would be easy. Gather her forces, march on the city and raze it to the ground. Surely Comte Pierre would know such was coming. He certainly wouldn’t stand in her way, she knew he had too little spine. He couldn’t even crush the rebellion himself.
The other option was more perilous. It could cost her everything.
With a deep breath, Celene stands straighter, holds herself higher and looks Michel in the eye. “Call the carriage. I have a proclamation to make.”
“Empress?”
“The elves will be free. Gaspard will get his war.”
Once again, I’m terrible at using the right channel so bits of plotting

in other news: how early do I want Felassan to show up and start the journey for the Eluvians. hmmmm
LeFox 🦊Today at 3:40 AM
Hmm. Well, he could still show up early.
Jay 🐼Today at 3:41 AM
Yeah, I figure he's gonna because he warned Briala about the rebellion, he was there to help kill Mainserai, so I imagine he could drift back in just "So I know of a thing that might help your plight. Props to her Majesty by the way, didn't expect her to have the gall" I just don't know how early he'd pop back up or how early they'd be comfortable leaving Halamshiral to defend themselves while they travel
LeFox 🦊Today at 3:44 AM
Yeah, it needs to be at a point of relative security or Celene judges it worth the risk.
Jay 🐼Today at 3:47 AM
Yeah so like. I feel like she wouldn't leave for it until at least Halamshiral is defensible without her, Michel, and Briala around. I can see them using the trip to gather more elves to the cause and spread their plan while they travel to the Eluvians. They'll still run into the clan and Imshael bc I wanna keep them and Gaspard will get word somehow and pursue so that stays relatively the same. But if they wait too long they lose power in only having the one city
LeFox 🦊Today at 3:48 AM
Yeah. They've got to pick their moment carefully. Briala could do it alone, but.
Jay 🐼Today at 3:49 AM
Yeah but I don't want her to do it alone. Tho.....hm. Hm. What if What if Felassan shows up shortly after Celene admits her hand in Briala's parents' death So Briala goes off to Eluvians for space and time and Elgara goes with her
LeFox 🦊Today at 3:50 AM
That'd work
Jay 🐼Today at 3:50 AM
gives time to explore them and if I tweak things enough I could make it so Gaspard doesn't just right out kill them both in pursuit And that way I still have major players actively working with the rebellion so I can flash over there for updates and I can develop both plots at the same time I...... could potentially have Leliana pop back up just all "Hey the Divine wants to know what the fuck you're thinking" and that could open more avenues there I just. Dunno exactly if Celene would potentially- well. She could. hm Oh. oh no she could and that could be a way to- huh. Okay. I think I actually know how I'm starting to develop the romance now Celene tells Briala about her parents early enough in the rebellion bc she knows Briala won't leave her completely then, she's still going to be loyal, Briala goes to get Eluvians, Elgara goes with her and that gives her the chance to get closer to Briala, they come back, Elgara pulls Celene aside and just "What the fuck if you love her, her feelings are not to be manipulated. You don't bring the Game into matter of the heart" which gets Celene to respect Elgara and see her differently and can start something there
If the prologue’s just gonna be a rewrite of the end of chapter 5 I could call chapter 1 chapter 6 and so on so forth. That way I can see just hoe many more chapters TME would have here. Hmmmmmm.
Prologue Starts immediately after the play Cover Celene considering burning Halamshiral and repercussions Cover her changing her mind Do I want her to announce it here or put it in Chapter 1? Chapter 1 Fast forward a few months Flash back to first getting to Halamshiral Thren and others need act...
If anyone wants to look at the slowly developing outline and comment or such, here’s the link to the google doc
You can tell when I started actually taking notes and hyperfixation and decided this would actually Be A Thing
I love how they're both almost friends and enemies in politics at the same time. They don't hate each other; they can't.
"You shemlen break every deal except with each other." ....But Briala did not entirely disagree with Mihris
This doesn't carry the weight I feel it should. They don't explore Briala's slow realization that she can't entirely trust Celene. Don't even show it well. Just hints here and there until the end of the book where she decides it's the elves first if Celene's going to put the throne first. And that's such a missed opportunity. I want to see Briala realize and struggle with that. And it's not something she's necessarily go na struggle with in my fic and I am Upset.
I get honor. I get maintaining a code for fair fights. But man I would have let Celene end him. Why is Michel so underrated? He's such a good character
What they lack in dick energy at least they make up in honor. Or spite in Michel's case.
Gaspard is terrible, don't get me wrong, but he's really good at looking at a fellow warrior and honoring their skill. Even if they're an enemy. And he's okay with working with an enemy for a common threat. He's a good fighter, a good warrior and soldier and leader in battle.
But battle and ruling a nation aren't the same. I wonder how good of an Emperor he really is.
Felassan and Solas discord shit:
Jay 🐼Today at 2:41 PM
Man, I apparently really wanna, eventually, actually write Felassan and Solas fighting over the Eluvians.
LeFox 🦊Today at 2:41 PM
Do it
Jay 🐼Today at 2:41 PM
oh if I do it won't be for a bit; I need to get Felassan's voice down before I write the scene in which he dies
LeFox 🦊Today at 2:42 PM
Do it someday tho
Jay 🐼Today at 2:42 PM
probably will It'd be a fun exploration of both him and Solas
LeFox 🦊Today at 2:43 PM
Absolutely And their friendship in conflict
Jay 🐼Today at 2:44 PM
Felassan, tired from avoiding sleep as much as possible to avoid Solas and leaning nonchalantly on his staff in Solas' way. Solas, angry that Felassan's turned on him but sentimental for their friendship and doesn't want to fight
LeFox 🦊Today at 2:45 PM
Solas trying to convince him this is the way it has to be. Felassan trying just as hard to convince him it doesn't have to be this way. Ultimately there's no choice but to fight, and even though Felassan knows he can't fight Fen'Harel, not with Mythal having given him her power, he still has to try.
Jay 🐼Today at 2:48 PM
Felassan has to make his stand. So that he knows he went down fighting for what he believed, because he knows he can't run forever, because Briala's a cause worth dying for. He knows he's going to die. It's one-on-one and Felassan never could have won that fight. But he has to try. And it crushes Solas because, once upon a time, he had that loyalty from Felassan. And Solas has to wonder what he did wrong to lose it. When did he start losing Felassan, when did this start falling apart? Is Felassan right? Is it too late?
LeFox 🦊Today at 2:51 PM
It's another chink in the armor that's already been damaged by his time with the Inquisition.
Jay 🐼Today at 2:52 PM
After Felassan falls Solas stays by him until he's actually dead and then a little longer to mourn before forcing himself to get back up and continue on
LeFox 🦊Today at 3:01 PM
It's just one more burden to carry, more blood on his hands. What's one more, when soon enough he'll have the whole world's blood on his hands?
Jay 🐼Today at 3:03 PM
He can do it, he has to. He's a god and gods can't afford to care so much but when did he become actually convinced of his act? Was Felassan right? Was Felassan right?
LeFox 🦊Today at 3:05 PM
I mean, he's not a god and he knows that, that's kind of the point, but "Was Felassan right" is still a weighty question to wrestle with
Jay 🐼Today at 3:07 PM
I mean yeah he knows he's not a god, but I feel the further he gets from the Inquisition the deeper he gets into his role and while he knows he's still convinced he's more powerful and intelligent than anyone else. Regardless, immediately after killing Felassan he's going to have a moment of abject horror at the fact that he could and wonder if he is becoming everything Felassan didn't want him to be
LeFox 🦊Today at 3:11 PM
Hell, everything he didn't want to be. Everything he hated in the Evanuris - just doing everything he can to get as much power as possible. Even if the ends are justified, even if it's all for the sake of restoring what was, is he actually justified.
Jay 🐼Today at 3:12 PM
Yeah, so Solas has a Dilemma and then choses to ignore it bc he can't afford it
Michel’s such a subtle character. There’s so much going on beneath the surface and no one really sees that because he won’t let them. He tries too hard to put on the front he believes he should have even to the point of Celene constantly reassuring him that, if there’s no audience, he can disapprove of and question her actions and choices.
He’s probably always been this. His father was probably like this, his father he probably never knew. I wonder if his mother loved or even knew his father or if she was just another nameless elf being raped by a human and having a child because of it. I wonder what happened to his friend in the alley he was saving and never saw again. I wonder what that friend thought happened to him. Do he assume him dead? He did die, in a way. He chose to forsake his elven blood, his elven mother. Part of him had to have died when he did that, even if he never identified as elven.
So imagine him coming back. Imagine him following Celene, protecting her and an elf on the street sees him and does a double take. Imagine someone shouting his name with his mother’s last name. Imagine Michel freezing for just the barest second and both Celene and Briala noticing. Imagine Briala watching what Michel chooses. Or was his name even Michel before? What if his name was more elven? What if he freezes and neither Celene nor Briala know why?
Imagine Michel walking away without turning, following Celene, but coming back that night to find his friend. Imagine his friend being all too happy to see him, imagine his friend saying he thought Michel had died. Imagine Michel being confronted with just how far he’s risen, imagine him warring with himself over thinking him better than these people who used to be friends and family to him many years ago.
Imagine Michel coming back to Celene after.
Imagine Michel handing her his sword.
Imagine him telling her the truth and expecting to be let go.
Imagine Celene smiling and handing his sword back.
Imagine her calling him her champion again.
Imagine Michel breaking.
