what were the odds that paul would be recommended to speak to his latest victim? he expected her to recognize him , to react in fear at his presence , but she had no recollection of him. no idea that she was opening up and confiding in her attacker. he promised he'd return within a few days to continue their therapy session.

walking out of the hospital room , he was already devising a plan for his next move as he pushed the button for the elevator. when the doors opened , he climbed inside and hit the button for the main floor and waited to descend.

at first, paul ignored the outburst ( he's got other things on his mind ). but dark eyes catch the woman out of the corner of his eye and he turns his gaze on her for a moment. she doesn't look like a patient or a medical doctor ( or worse , a cop ) , but her dress indicates she is a professional of some sort. feeling obligated, he asks, ' everything alright? '

paul is deep in thought as he scrolls through news articles on his phone. he shouldn't be doing this here , on his own personal mobile , but he hadn't had time to catch the latest news on the murdered girl that morning ( thanks to his wife needing help with the kids ). so that's what he's doing now.

tearing his attention from the screen , it takes him several beats to realize that someone is speaking to him. his gaze locks on the man before him , annoyed at the interruption but trying not to let his mask slip.

Yes it seems she had hit something within him when she brought up his daughter. But not wanting to push him too much, Stella backed off that topic and moved back on to the game topic.

"If you haven't been playing games this whole time then how will you start now?" She asked. Siting back down, Stella crossed one leg over the other, trying her best not to lose her cool like she just did.

paul tilted his head to the side , falling silent once more as he watched stella's outburst. was it all for show or had she let her true feelings slip through ( as he had done only moments before )? he tucked away his own emotions and thoughts of his daughter and buried them back down inside himself once more. 

he would open up to stella -- and only stella -- when he decided he was done. for now though , he still held all the cards.

' oh stella . . . ' he allowed himself a feigned disappointed sigh as leaned back in his own ( uncomfortable ) chair , a glean in his eye. ' i can't give away the answer. what would be the fun in that? '

paul watched as the woman walked past. there was something about the way she had looked at stella , almost pausing in front of the other woman as if she wanted to say something before continuing without a word , that hooked his attention. maybe friend had been too strong a word. acquaintances? maybe a brief encounter?

his brow raises as he returned his attention to the woman beside him. they were both similar in that respect , the lack of friends. growing up , it had been hard for him to make friends. now , he mostly had acquaintances to keep up appearances ( or for alibis ). besides , the woman wasn't his type ( despite being a brunette ).
