one thing I want people to understand is that the statement of “fiction doesn’t effect reality” is blatantly incorrect. fiction DOES effect reality, just not on a one-to-one ratio.
a common example I see people using when talking about this is the infamous slenderman stabbing case of 2014. for those out of the know, two teenage girls agreed to stab a friend of theirs to death as a sacrifice to slenderman. fortunately the victim survived and both girls were charged for their crimes. for more information about this case, here’s a video discussing it.
now while I understand that this is one of the biggest examples of fiction directly affecting reality, it’s important to understand that these girls were young and also incredibly mentally ill (one of them being diagnosed with schizophrenia during the case). this doesn’t mean all creepypasta fans are going to kill people because they read “jeff the killer” to scare their friends, it just means that certain people (primarily young and/or mentally ill people) will take these stories and misinterpret them and use this to harm others.
there are other cases of people committing crimes over fiction that are much different than the source material that inspired them. a good example of this is the case of andrew blaze/randy stair. to summarize this case, andrew blaze was a youtuber that proceeded to commit a mass shooting because he believed he would be reincarnated as ember mcclain, a villain from the cartoon “danny phantom”. for more information on this case and the perpetrator, check out the video below
now the difference between this and the slenderman case is that ellen mcclain is from a kids show. while you can argue that slenderman is just a story and couldn’t possibly inspire such a heinous crime, he is still a character from an online horror story. but ember mcclain, while being a villain, is FAR from being a horror character and I doubt there’s anything in her story that could directly inspire such a heinous crime.
but if you’re still not convinced, let me inform you of the man who killed because of applejack from my little pony. brandon hole was a mentally unwell nineteen year-old who shot up a fedex facility in 2021. he took eight lives before committing suicide. an hour before the shooting brandon posted to facebook “I hope that I can be with applejack in the afterlife, my life has no meaning without her. If there's no afterlife and she isn't real then my life never mattered anyway.” to his facebook. for more information on the shooting, check out at this video.

now why do I bring all of this up? well it’s because these are the most common cases I see for people bringing up how fiction affects reality and I’m not going to deny that. but it’s clear from these cases that it isn’t a one-to-one ratio from the source material to the crime. sometimes it is (see the slenderman stabbing) but other times people will commit crimes due to their own delusions (see andrew blaze) or for completely unrelated reasons (see brandon hole)
there’s also a handful of other cases I could list to show the variety in crimes that were “inspired” by fiction vs the actual crime itself, which I’ll link videos about below. my father actually brought up the mark chapman case when I discussed this issue with him.

in conclusion: fiction does affect reality but not to a one-to-one ratio. not every horror movie fan is going to go out and kill because they watched the movie “scream”. not every mentally ill person is going to believe that they have to kill someone because they read a creepypasta. and not everyone who watches my little pony is going to go out and commit a mass shooting.
I think now more than ever we have to look at the people that are consuming this kind of content and make sure they’re consuming it in a healthy manner. if you notice a friend or someone online who is showing concerning behavior after consuming fictional content, check up on them or report their concerning posts. looking for warning signs before this behavior transforms into something harmful is incredibly important. it’s also important that content that features dark themes has the proper trigger warnings on it. obviously you can’t control who views your content (especially if you want your work to be public) but placing warnings where they’re needed is helpful.
fiction can impactful to many people and simply saying “it doesn’t affect reality” because YOU aren’t committing crimes over a movie is stupid. media impacts people, this is a known fact, but it can change heavily based on who is viewing it. so instead of waving away criticism of your proship art with the “fiction doesn’t affect reality” excuse, maybe take the steps to ensure that this content doesn’t end up in the wrong hands 💜💖
