Aiden grinned and took a few steps forward before extending his hand to take the phone from Mason. He typed in his information quickly before handing the phone back. “I put it under ‘Haiden’. If anyone asks, just say she spells her name weird.”

Mason felt his blush deepening as he took his phone back from Aiden, his fingers brushing his for a split second. "Aye aye, captain.”

“No problem. And if you ever decide to explore the curious or drop it off the end of the word altogether, gimme a call,” he joked, trying to lighten the mood a little.

“Yeah, totally,” he said with a small nod, fumbling for his phone in his pocket. “If, uh, if I’m gonna call you--I-I, um--can I maybe...” Mason trailed off, nervously rubbing the back of his neck as his cheeks grew pink. “Can I have your number?” he said finally, his eyes slightly wider than normal.

“Well you don’t have to make a decision right away.” He gave Mason an encouraging smile, not taking an steps closer to him to keep him from getting even more uncomfortable. “Your bicurious secret is safe with me.”

Mason let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding in, looking up at Aiden gratefully. “Thank you,” he mumbled, forcing a small smile.

“So you’ve never been attracted to a guy before?” he asked. “Or did my flirting just mess with your head too much and you have no interest in guys whatsoever.”

“I mean, there are guys I’ve found attractive but I always just brushed it off--I certainly never actually spoke to any of them,” he said hurriedly, his hands deep in his pockets. “I want to say I do have an interest...I think.”

“i have a list, if you can do one of them i’ll put them on.” she smirked. “cupcakes, cookies or a record. i don’t come cheap.” she chuckled as she joked. “for you i’ll put them on, but seriously, don’t let me help. last time i was allowed in a chemistry class i set it on fire.” 

Mason raised an eyebrow at her, picking up the tube with a pair of tongs and holding it over the flame for a moment before setting it back down in the rack, watching the reaction for a couple seconds. “I’m intrigued, yet at the same time I’m not really sure I want to know the story behind that.”

“Okay, good.” She hummed, matching his smile. “Yeah — some of the girls in the team can be pretty rough.”

“This is why I run track. The most contact I get is between myself and the ground occasionally.”

“oh, shoot!” she said, pulling the goggles over her eyes again. “goodness gracious, sometimes i think i’d lose my head if it wasn’t attached.” she laughed nervously, tugging at the ponytail that sat on top of her head.

Mason let out a soft laugh, giving her a reassuring pat on the shoulder. “You’re fine,” he assured her, nibbling on his bottom lip as he glanced back at the test tube, scribbling a note down at the bottom of his paper before dropping his pen with a satisfied sigh. “There, all done, and neither of us died,” he said with a grin, holding up his hand for a high five.

Aiden looked around discreetly to make sure nobody was paying attention before following after Mason about thirty seconds later. He walked behind the bleachers and stuffed his hands into his pockets as he wandered up to Mason. “So what’s the deal?”

“I...” Mason trailed off, his bottom lip catching on his teeth as he stared down at his toes. “I don’t know--everything’s so confusing. My brain might as well be mush in my skull ‘cause it really isn’t helping me out right now.”

“Yeah, of course.” He sent Mason an apologetic smile. “I’m really sorry if I made things weird.”

“Nothing’s weird,” Mason insisted, looking around one more time before nodding between Aiden and the bleachers before walking in that direction, hoping Aiden would follow.

Aiden looked at him curiously for a second before his eyes widened in realization. “Wait, are you not out?” he asked a little too loudly. He lowered his voice before starting again. “Or not into guys at all? Sorry, I’ve just been out for so long that I just assume that everybody is–wrongly most of the time.”

Mason’s eyes widened and he glanced around before looking back at Aiden. “Can we not do this here?” he said in a low voice, his cheeks burning.

“I mean, you look pretty hot,” he said with a grin. He bit his lip and gave Mason another onceover, slower and more appreciative this time.

“Is it the scraped up knees?” he asked in a failed attempt at a joke, an uneasy laugh slipping from his lips as he felt Aiden’s eyes wandering over him.

Aiden smiled at Mason’s hand but stood up easily from his crouching position. “I appreciate the gesture, but if you wanna hold my hand you can just ask,” he said with a wink.

Mason’s lips parted slightly and he uneasily withdrew his hand, awkwardly rubbing at the back of his neck. “O-Oh, I--no, it’s fine,” he mumbled, feeling his cheeks heat up again. “You know, it really is kinda hot for spring. Do you feel hot? I feel hot,” Mason blurted out, desperate to change the topic of conversation.

Aiden glanced down to the end of the straightaway, then leaned in a little closer to Mason. “We should probably move off the track so they can continue with their practice,” he murmured, a smirk playing at his lips.

Mason’s breath caught in his throat as Aiden leaned closer and he quickly averted his eyes, his gaze landing upon his coach who was giving them a death stare. “Good idea,” he blurted out, scrambling to his feet and after a moment of contemplation, offering Aiden a hand.

“do you really think i’d drink it? i’m not a baby. but maybe i can slip it into mrs. carter’s coffee when she isn’t looking.” she smirked, but she was joking entirely. “these goggles don’t get me free drinks. i’m just going to let you do all the work, i’ll just fuck it up anyway.”

“No, no--I know you wouldn’t drink it. I was just saying that if it can totally destroy your stomach you probably don’t want it getting in your eyes,” he clarified. Mason tapped his foot a bit anxiously; he didn’t want to seem annoying, but then again he didn’t want any problems. “Even if I’m doing the work, there’s always a risk of you getting caught in the middle. What’s it going to take for you to put ‘em on?”

mila put the goggles back on. she hadn’t realized she had took them off, probably because her mind was in things other than that class. “ thanks, ” she mumbled, running her hand through her hair, “ isn’t potassium hydroxide toxic ?? why are we even dealing with it ?? ” she wasn’t too sure about it, but she definitely read something about it– chemistry wasn’t her favorite subject at all.

“Good question. The teachers seem to think that we’re supposed to be mature so it shouldn’t be an issue...” Mason trailed off, looking over his shoulder to see another boy prodding his friend with a pair of tongs. “But clearly some of us aren’t so mature,” he finished with a playful smile, glancing back at the test tube.

Mckinley’s eyes widened in realization and she nodded. “Right— sorry.” She murmured, feeling a little bad for her earlier assumption. “Thank you. It must’ve been from when I took a tumble in the middle of practice.”

“No, it’s totally fine,” he said with a reassuring smile, plucking out another piece he’d missed. “Tough tackle?” he guessed, falling back a step.

her eyes stared at him blankly, as if she was ever one to follow the rules anyway. “it can’t be that dangerous.” she rolled. “the only way i’ll ever put these bug eyes on is if beyonce comes and literally eats me out. and i don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon.”

Mason nibbled on his bottom lip, casting a concerned look her way. “If you ingested it, it’d literally eat through your stomach, so I’d say it’s pretty dangerous,” he reasoned, taking a quick look at the test tube before looking back at her. “I hate to be that guy, but looks are sorta secondary to safety, y’know? You wont even look bad, I promise.”
