Rethinking Rape Ann J Cahill, 2001
Rape, claims Ann J. Cahill, affects not only those women who are raped, but all women who experience their bodies as rapable and adjust their actions and self-images accordingly. Rethinking Rape counters legal and feminist definitions of rape as mere assault and decisively emphasizes the centrality of the body and sexuality in a crime which plays a crucial role in the continuing oppression of women. didn’t know you’re an islamophobe time to unfollow since you’re another racist cracker pretending to be an ally
Yep sounds just like me.
there’s no need to drag muslims into issues you know nothing about. You don’t know why Muslim women cover themselves. Not only that but many other religions women cover themselves including mostly pagans and Jewish people. You’re not edgy or giving us a hot new take that’ll definitely help women in any way you’re just racist, islamophobic and antisemitic. Do you have any good reason to be like this?
I don’t think women should be required to cover their hair when men aren’t required to, in any religion. I’ve been pretty clear about that. How does that make me anti Semitic exactly?
oh my God.., men are literally required to cover themselves too in Islam. Not only that but you know jack shit about Islamic history and why it’s so important to us. If you could stop being a white saviour for like 5 minutes and stop trying to police women’s bodies that would be great thanks babes x
I said hair. Are men required to cover their hair under Muslim law or custom? If not, why not?
I’ve clearly upset you, but please understand that any disapproving thoughts I might have about a religion do not actually prevent you from practicing that religion. I don’t have the power to make anyone do anything differently. I have disapproving thoughts about all religions, including the one I was raised in, because I’m an atheist.
This is the internet. Not everyone is going to agree with you. Block me and move on. My thoughts on Islam are not enough of a reason to spike your cortisol levels and elevate your blood pressure. Do that every day and you’ll end up with all kinds of illnesses.
@antiporn-activist girl, i'm mennonite; a lot of us choose to cover our hair and modesty is important to all of us. i'm sure you'd disagree with that. but from what i know about you online- i know that your views on modesty/hair covering don't mean you disprove of the person. disagreeing with an aspect of one's faith doesn't mean you hate the person! i don't know why they can't see that.
well thanks. no, i’m pretty sure i can disagree with an aspect of someone’s religion but not hate them or try to destroy them or force them to convert. some folks don’t seem to understand that internet strangers can’t actually change someone else’s behavior long distance.
but see, i don’t think showing your hair is immodest. hair is just a protein that grows out of the scalp, male or female alike, and it has no inherent moral value. just like toenails, fingernails, teeth, or eyelashes. but seems like the religions that ask women to cover their hair tend to assign a moral value to the hair when it grows from a woman’s head: women’s hair is sexual, women’s hair is temptation, etc. but men’s hair gets to be value-free.
so why is that?
BTW I was raised Reform Jewish and we encourage critical thinking, inquiry, and analysis as part of our faith. So when y’all insist that I stop my critical thinking, inquiry, or analysis, you’re actually disapproving of my religious traditions. But it’s not my style to freak out about that.
@antiporn-activist it’s like society lost its ability to disagree with each other-now every disagreement is taken as an attack on the person. everyone is sooooo sensitive
They often act like I’m the first person to ever disagree with them in their lifetime. How could you have lived this long without anyone having a different opinion?
Veiling is very complicated. As someone not from a religious tradition that requires or encourages veiling I’m not going to pretend I understand the nuances of the practice. But any requirement of women to dress a certain way or cover certain parts of their bodies that comes with consequences if they don’t comply is troubling. If veiling is a choice, then women won’t be ostracized or cast out of their religious and social communities for refusing. Often it’s not a choice. That’s an issue. But I think we should leave it to Muslim women to find the words to critique it and criticize their own communities. They are certainly capable of doing so. From outside a community, our criticism is not valuable, wanted, or effective.

Ben and jerry have BEEN saying this !!!!!!
Ben and Jerry’s over here making me like a corporation, those bastards.
Ben and Jerry’s are a massive, multi-national dairy corporation owned by Unilever, one of the biggest and most profitable consumer product companies on the planet. They’ve been profiting from social justice advertising for years, but don’t be fooled - it’s purely a marketing strategy. Ben and Jerry’s don’t care about racism and incarceration any more than they care their low-paid workforce or the animals who are exploited and killed to make their products. Corporations are not our allies in the fight for equality and social justice.
They also shamelessly Greenwash, claiming to be so concerned for the environment and yet most of their desserts use animal products in the form of dairy, which is a massively unsustainable resource.
Instead of getting hard for Ben and Jerry’s for their performance of activism, give attention to actual activists. Do you think Angela Davis, probably the most prominent and important prison abolitionist in the world, is impressed by Ben and Jerry’s? I don’t.
me: yeah im done crying over this lol its not even worth my tears
me 3 seconds later:
is giving men head an inherently degrading thing?
I’m going to give what is probably a frustrating answer to you, but I don’t think this is the right question to ask. I don’t think sex - at all - is inherently degrading. Sex is a normal human behavior. I think women should instead ask themselves questions like: do I enjoy this? is this dangerous? am I vulnerable? does my partner respect me? am I performing? is sex with my partner mutual? do I feel safe? what are the consequences to saying no to my partner? the list can go on.
one might ask instead: does my partner feel like they are degrading me during sex? is it important to them to degrade me? is my degradation sexy, a turn on to them? that is an unhealthy dynamic to be in, and it is extremely common for men to have some belief or association that his sexual behaviors towards women are indeed inherently degrading, and what’s more that is right and how it should be and even more so that it is extremely arousing to him.
