My take on ~small local farms~ is that I know what those are via close relatives, and I know the local, traditional, pre-capitalism way, small scale, "treat animals like kings" meat comes from pigs that are hanged upside down, have their throat slit, and are left to bleed as they cry and yell so horribly that kids are not allowed to go watch that single part of the "process" of making meat.
No animal wants to die, no matter how local and small the farm they were raised at. And animals are not killed more mercifully just because it happens outside a slaughterhouse.
"Local" and "small scale" and "organic" mean nothing to these poor, vulnerable victims. The moment we decide to see animals as resources rather than living beings deserving of compassion, we are already on our way to the unspeakable abuses that are very much a reality, even with all those labels. Abuses that we would never be okay with if those where our pets.
If you have the option to stop buying meat, and you care about animal abuse, you definitely should work your way towards a meat-free diet.
