A community and family is mourning the loss of Daniel Kevin Harris, whose life was taken this week by a State Trooper who apparently fears sign language. Harris, who is deaf and mute, was gunned down in front of his house.

“I was here in my driveway and I saw the highway patrol car come through and it was smoking really bad,” said neighbor Mark Barringer. “About 10 seconds later, I heard one gunshot.”

Harris was trying to communicate with the trooper using sign language before he was killed.

Harris died on the scene. He was 28-years-old.

Neighbor Ryan Russell said he’d see the man out in the neighborhood speaking in sign language with his family. “It seemed like a very peaceful family. These things are always heartbreaking.”

In the land of the free, a deaf man suspected of driving too fast can be killed in cold blood. Unfortunately, as we’ve shown time and again, this type of mistreatment and attacks on the deaf by police are all too common.

So Muslim American Activist Linda Sarsour has set up a fundraiser page for the family of Khalid Jabara. If you aren’t familiar with his name, Khalid Jabara was a Lebanese Christian man who was brutally shot and killed on his front porch last week by his white supremacist neighbor who has been harrassing his family for a while now and tried to kill Haifa Jabara (Khalid’s mother) last year by hitting her with his car leaving her extremely injured and bleeding on the side of the road. He’s continiously called them “dirty Arabs”, “Filthy Lebanese who throw Gay people from the roof”, and “Mooslems”. The Jabara family relied on their son as their primary caretaker and so far $20,000 has been raised to help cover funeral costs and his father’s medical needs. From the fundraiser page, “Khalid served as his father’s caretaker as his dad needs constant medical attention. Funds will go towards providing daily home health care for Khalid’s father.
