“Do I really have to answer this one? I wouldn’t want to be unfairly accused of narcissism.”

A terribly crowded room, teeming with screaming fans who suddenly surged forward as one when the music reached its final note, fading out into the great shout of applause until nothing of its melody remained, all but overwhelmed by the cacophonous sound of numerous voices unifying under the guise of adoration and excitement.
Elbowed aside by two very impassioned women as they determinedly - or rather, frantically - worked their way toward the stage, Cassius bit back a wince, running his fingers through the thick strands of his dark brown hair - he’d fashioned it into a ponytail earlier that evening, but sometime during the show, several strands had escaped the black elastic hair band, giving it a slightly disheveled appearance - as his dark gaze passed from unfamiliar face to unfamiliar face in search of his coworkers, both of whom had invited him to attend this concert with them but who had disappeared within seconds of filing into the packed room, the intensity of their excitement permeating every inch of the atmosphere. Despite their claim that they’d both feel much safer if a man tagged along, they hadn’t wasted any time in abandoning him to his own devices, leaving him to fend for himself and against a mob that practically demanded crowd control.
Quite rude, if you asked him.
Fighting his way through the throng of people surrounding the stage, aiming for the outer edges of the crowd, Cassius shrugged off a few loose hands here and there, accustomed to being groped at least once whilst in public. He didn’t know what it was about him that inspired such inappropriate behavior, but he’d long since learned to live with it, refusing to let it affect his life. Luckily, they knew where to draw the line, and in certain situations, that was all that mattered.
Before he could reach his intended destination, however, the horde of loud, obnoxious fans moved yet again, dragging him along with them -
- until he stumbled into the narrow pathway of the approaching band, accidentally knocking into the charismatic leader - or so the articles dubbed him - even as he instinctively raised his hands to catch himself, fingers pressing against the broad shoulders of the Echo Lane. “Ah - sorry,” Cassius started to say, lifting his apologetic gaze to the man’s face ... but then, breath hitching as soon as he mistakenly locked eyes with his reflection in the other male’s black shades, his lips parted as a bright, crimson flush overtook his cheeks ... “ What beauty today ... in a land such as this,” - a whisper of awe, accompanied by a softening expression. - “Crashing down on my emotions; a beautiful high.”

ECHO AND NARCISSUS is an episode from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. The story is told in Book III of the Metamorphoses, and tells the story of a talkative nymph who is admired by the goddess Aphrodite for her magnificent voice and song. When she tricks Zeus’s jealous wife, Hera, Hera curses her by making her only able to repeat the last words said, and couldn’t say anything on her own. This is the explanation of the aural effect which was named after her. She falls in love with Narcissus, whom she catches sight of when he is chasing frightened deer into his nets. Eventually, Echo’s presence is revealed to Narcissus, who, after a comic, yet tragic scene, rejects her love. Echo prays in her mind of this to Aphrodite, who makes Echo disappear, until she remains a voice and is heard by all. Then, Narcissus rests by a spring, and whilst drinking, a new thirst grows inside him and he is captivated by the image of the beauty he has seen and falls deeply in love with all the things for which he himself is admired. He then wastes away with love for himself, echoing the manner in which Echo did earlier on. A while later his body is gone, and in its place is a narcissus flower. The pale flower is still found near river banks so that it can be reflected on the water. (x)
