Danielle hadn’t realized that was the answer she was hoping for until she heard it. “Good. Agreed,” Danielle nodded as she sat back down. She wasn’t ready for a serious relationship and doubted Mateo was, either. “How long do you have on your break?”

Slipping her phone out of her pocket just long enough to check the time, Mateo’s nose wrinkled in thought. “It’s my lunch so I’ve got about half an hour left, give or take. It’s pretty lenient when I’m not actually working on someone’s car here.” And it likely had just as much to do with the fact that her father wasn’t exactly strict. “You don’t have to stay the whole time if you only came around to let me know you totally have the hots for me.”

“I keep people hooked,” Danielle’s smirk only grew. “But… look, I’m not ready to be out.” She admitted, allowing her smirk to drop in place of something more serious. She knew that her parents would be accepting but she didn’t want to deal with having a personal conversation with them.

Turning as serious as possible when Danielle did, Mateo braced her hands on the edge of her desk. “Like I said, nobody’s gonna hear it from me,” she said. “So you can... keep doing what you’re doing, I’ll keep doing what I’m doing, and when it’s okay with you we can get together somewhere and kiss some more or whatever.”

Danielle groaned. “Yeah.” She shook her head, ashamed at her lack of chill during that situation. She had too much pride to outwardly admit that she had been jealous. Pinching the bridge of her nose, Danielle got up to stretch her legs. “So,” she turned and smirked, “crush?”

Trying not to make a face, Mateo couldn’t find it in herself to regret her exact words. “You’re hot and you’re confident but you’re pretty cute too and that’s... pretty much my exact type. I just usually stop thinking about people when they’re not around and-” She paused, gesturing about while she stepped back to sit on the edge of her desk. “I didn’t stop thinking about you. So yeah. Crush.”

“Fuck,” Danielle agreed. Her head felt dizzy and she could feel her entire body buzzing. She hadn’t known that kissing someone could feel that good. She licked her lips, heart pounding at the smile on Mateo’s face. “I know. I’m amazing at everything so naturally that comes with kissing too.”

"Naturally,” Mateo whispered, briefly looking from Danielle’s lips to her eyes. She wanted to stay in her personal space for as long as she could get away with. “Can’t wait to see what other shit you’re amazing at.” Her head tipped and her eyes narrowed, playfully teasing. “So is this why you asked if me and the bartender were serious?”

Stupid crush. Danielle’s eyes widened slightly, her eyes drifting down to her hand that was now in Mateo’s. Every other time she was touching someone, it was for appearances. She launched forward and pressed her lips forcefully against Mateo’s. Her hands flew up to cup both of Mateo’s cheeks. It was nothing like any of the other kisses she’d had—ones that were just so people wouldn’t suspect. It was good.

Taken pleasantly by surprise, Mateo’s hands blindly found Danielle’s sides while she eagerly returned the kiss, not caring in the slightest that she couldn’t quite stifle a little whine against Danielle’s lips and all but melted against her. Only when she absolutely needed to pull away did she actually break the kiss, still keeping her eyes closed for a good little while after. “Fuck, Danielle,” she finally whispered, a blissful smile on her face.

The ‘office’ wasn’t exactly all that impressive, nor was it what Danielle had pictured, but the privacy was appreciated. She really didn’t want to be around a ton of strangers when she was such a mess. Danielle choked out a laugh, shaking her head. “Yes. But I don’t even know. I’ve never even fucking told anyone that.” She sat down in the nearest chair, allowing her shoulders to hunch as she tapped her foot. Her following words came out in a defeated whisper. “You’re fucking impossible, do you know that? Honestly? Do you know how many nights I’ve spent awake thinking of you?”

Instead of perching on her desk, Mateo slowly wandered closer as soon as Danielle brought up thinking about her until she was just standing directly in front of her. “Do you know how many times I’ve brought up the cute straight girl with people I know? Never your name,” she added hastily, trying to minimize the risk of freaking Danielle out more. With confidence, she reached for Danielle’s hand. “I’m the first one you’ve told,” she muttered, more to hear it again for herself than anything. “Nobody is gonna hear it from me, Danielle. You know,” she paused just long enough to laugh, relieved, “I really thought I was getting my brother’s bad luck. He always gravitates to straight boys somehow. I’m really, really glad this stupid crush isn’t on a straight girl.”

Breathing out shakily, Danielle managed a nod. “Sure. I’ll wait here, it’s fine.” Pushing her hands stressfully through her hair, she tried to not consider what she’d just done. She had never told anyone before and certainly hadn’t planned on telling Mateo. It was the first time she had ever been even remotely honest with another person. 

Mateo lingered for just a second longer before moving away to wash up as quickly as possible, not wanting to leave Danielle alone for long while at the same time wanting to give her a minute to herself, at least. Once she felt like a normal human being again, she made a beeline for Danielle, urging that she follow her on her way past her, then lead the way up the stairs in the back to get to the few small, unimpressive but private rooms on top of the garage. Hers was the first one and as soon as Mateo was inside, she shut the blinds over the window connecting her “office” and the hall. “Would it be stupid to ask you how you feel?”

Danielle nodded in relief. She didn’t want to go back to her apartment, back to being alone with her thoughts. She was sure she’d go insane if she sat with them any longer. There were at least a million different ways Danielle could answer that question. The truth was that she had been thinking of Mateo nonstop, thinking of kissing her and thinking of that stupid smile. But, instead, what came out of her mouth was: “I’m gay.” 

Expecting something maybe a little snarky, Mateo’s grin faltered in surprise, assuming that maybe she’d heard her wrong for all of a few seconds until the look on her face proved otherwise. “I’ve got an office. We can get some more privacy there,” she offered, wanting more than anything to reach out and try to physically comfort Danielle but kept her hands to herself, partly because they were too dirty. “I just have to wash up. Sound okay to you?”
