An article in The Mathematics Teacher about exploring number patterns in a calendar to support early algebraic reasoning and moving to more proof-like arguments. Similar to use of choral counts.
Three act lessons for elementary classrooms, organized by standard.
Decimal decision tasks and student work and reasoning about why 2/.1 is 20, not .2
Introduction to Circles - Math lesson at Shanghai Mingxing School by Yang Yu. TPEG 2014 Trip to Shanghai.
Pretty incredible example of inquiry-based introduction to the ‘anatomy’ of circles as functional tools. This lesson was recorded in Shanghai, translated by graduate students at Vanderbilt. 40+ students in the room, but the concept of “radius,” “infinity,” and relationship between circles and other regular polygons is introduced through a simple task: how can we cut out a circle?
Tasks from the YouCubed team and Jo Boaler. Indexed by grade level, practice standard, and mathematical topic.
We are working to develop a repertoire of tools to support teacher educators design and enact practice-based opportunities for teachers.
Resources for general teacher education pedagogies, like leading rehearsals and screening classroom video in teacher ed settings.
a community for number string design
Resources, facilitation protocols/guides, and videos for supporting teachers to use number strings.
Choral counting: What, how, & resources from UW’s TEDD site. Includes protocols, ideas and resources for planning, launching, videos, etc.
Exploring different ways to get from 6 to 8 in equally-sized units, depending on the number of ‘steps’ to get there on the number line. Great use of open number line, intermingles decimal notation with mixed numbers.
Great example of investigating “random” in two different ways - distribution vs. distribution of “second roll” by my friend Jason in Seattle.
Great resource that indexes math mistakes and invites commenters to interpret, unpack, and plan instructional responses. All grade levels represented, indexed by common core standards.
Choral counting in .3 using rows of 5, rows of 6. Examples of student work/thinking.
