Rin Tanaka stopped by my studio a few days ago to take some promo portraits for @inspirationla He worked his magic and captured a few good ones :) I’ll be showing my art at @inspirationla February 7th & 8th at the LA Convention Center. The event has a few artists, its main draw are booths with vendors selling amazing vintage clothing. The best of the best. Rin also travels around photographing hard to find vintage clothing and compiles his best pieces into inspirational books. A little time lapse of me printing the commissioned piece that I posted a few days ago. I didn’t record the printing of the sun but you can see the printing of both colors of the waves. I usually mock up the images on the computer to get a feel for placement and colors. Then I will mix the colors on the spot until they feel right to me. I’m partially colorblind so getting a color mock up that I’m happy with to start from is really helpful. Otherwise balancing the color relationships can be a challenge. Also, though in my head they are white, the sailcloths I print on are never actually pure white. I have so much to be thankful for, today and everyday, but nothing is as important to my emotional well being as the love I receive from my family and friends. All the kids in my life; my niece, nephews and the children of some of my best friends, bring me such joy. It can be hard to make good friends as an adult, but over the last couple of years I have had the pleasure of making some great new friends as well. Plus, I have old friends who, though they may live far away, or be occupied with other responsibilities, don’t miss a beat with me when we are able to spend time together. It is amazing to be able to make a living as an artist, but that accomplishment would be somewhat empty without the people I love to celebrate with. And when things get shaky, as they do at times for all of us, it is everything to have people who love me to lean on. I made this bag for a vintage show up in LA. At that show I met a big dude who was super nice and encouraging about my work. He was stoked on the bags I had made and he had an idea for some new projects as well. He got my contact info and went on his way. I had no idea who he was. Later he wanted to meet up at a climbing gym and I drove there hoping to sell him some art. He ended up buying a few bags and commissioning some new artwork for use on a special project. I was super stoked, but still had no idea who he was or really what his deal was. Then he texted me late one night and told me to check my Instagram the next day. Turns out it was @prideofgypsies, Aquaman himself, Jason Mamoa. That day he officially announced @mananalu.water and I was blown away. I honestly don’t watch a lot of TV or movies so I wasn’t familiar with his great talent up to that point. He’s a pretty down to earth guy and he didn’t give off the vibe that I “should” know who he was, so I didn’t think much of it. I’m happy that this bag, and a few others, have found a home with him. So excited to share this project! @promixnutrition came to me with the desire to use some of my art for the packaging of their Paleo Dark Chocolates. I ended up designing all of the packaging and adding more illustrations to highlight some of the ingredients. Both the mint chocolate chip and peanut butter cup flavors are available now on the Promix website and on Amazon. The Midnight Chocolate with CBD will be available at a later date.
