Franz Marc 1880-1916

Franz Marc was knowing for painting animals and using extreme  bright primary colours.  Marc creates emotional intensity in his artwork making him very successful.  Marc was a member of Der Blaue Reiter.  Marc served in the military for a year and after this he got into Fine Arts.

Marc's Artworks has a Cubist touch to them however he focused on how the painting made you feel and what is happening in the artwork by making the artwork intense using lines, shapes and colour. Marc used bold colours to give off a childhood atmosphere.

Something that Marc focused on was  art movement and trying to capture movement within his artworks and he managed to do so very successfully.   This painting is super effective due to the composition, having many layers creating depth helping the viewer to look into the painting. Marc uses a lot of red, making this artwork very powerful, then linked with the green making it calm and approachable.  

This painting is very successful due to there being a foreground, middle ground and background which creates depth to the painting which helps lead your eyes into the artwork. Marc has used various warm and cool tones and by using more cool tones help the warm tones stand out more.   I feel as Marc has created the feeling of fresh air and movement through the quickness of his brush strokes.

This painting was well done due to the use of the black lines, doing this makes it stand out due to the black resembling darkness and fear and red giving off  a powerful image.  having the red with the black shows anger within this painting and then the yellow at the middle shows you joy and happiness reaching through.  Marc’s painting catches the eye of the viewer due to the abstract animal creating depth to the painting.

Cecily Brown

Cecily Brown is a British painter (1969) who is known for producing huge canvases covered with pigment and incorporating sexually explicit themes. Brown’s work has a abstract approach to it.

This painting of Brown’s looks very dark and mysterious and is difficult to figure out what is going on in the painting. The painting looks like there is some sort of battle going on giving it a sense of violence, Brown also uses a lot of flesh colours suggesting that they may be nude.  Brown uses quite a bit of warm tones giving her painting a hostile atmosphere and seeing a lot of greys and blues giving her painting more chaos.  We can see how loosely Brown paints due to the loose brushstrokes.  The way Brown uses the colour blue in this painting suggests sadness by the coarse brushstrokes she uses.

This painting of Brown’s looks like a racetrack for the Olympics due to the horizonal redlines but once again looks like a fight and near the bottom almost resembles an animal of some sort on the floor which looks to be blood around it symbiosing death.  The painting is very fast paste and shows a lot of movement due to the rushed brushstrokes she has used.  The background to he painting looks a lot more peaceful and has a tranquil atmosphere to it almost like you would rather be over where the background is instead of here which resembles anger due to all the chaos.

In this painting we see a abstracted tree with what looks to be a girl wearing white swinging on a makeshift swing by using rope and wrapping it around the tree and using a wooden plank to sit on.  We can also see a silhouette of a man on the left which he looks to be fishing or perhaps raising his hand adding mystery to Brown’s painting.  Brown uses a lot of warm tones in this painting helping to portray excitement and happiness, which can also be found within the girl swinging.

When looking at this painting we can see the concentration that went into this painting due to see all the small details that Brown has captured. Brown has a lot going on in each painting she does helping her art to be talked about. This painting seems to be of some sort of street due to seeing maybe different poses of people, some people sitting down and enjoying the sun which can be seen due to all the warm colours that Brown has used.  Brown’s work looks very similar Jackson Pollock in the way they both use many different colours within their paintings and both have an abstract approach and both put a lot of concentration into their paintings.

Lee Bul

Lee Bul is a contemporary sculpture (1964).  Bul wanted people to question her work and to talk about how powerful her work is and the impact it has when viewing Bul’s work.

This work of Bul’s I found to be very interesting to due to obscurity of the shape and almost resembling a creature you will see in a nightmare however to some extent it creates the opposite effect due to it being covered with white acrylic paint which portrays innocence.

This work of Bul’s is very interesting due to the intensity of the work and looking very scientific and looking like roots coming out from a heart and almost like the object is coming alive and can see quick movement within the sculpture.  The emotion that it brings to the viewer is confusing and not knowing what it makes you feel, This work also give off a unsettling atmosphere.  Through the intensity it shows how powerful the sculpture looks and showing that its unbreakable. 

Bul’s work shows what cannot be seen to the viewers eye as this piece looks like its showing what is underground, showing the roots of a tree and how interesting they are by the way they wrap themselves around each other giving off a strong visual impact.

   This work of Bul’s creates interesting shadows, making the shadows the most important part of this artwork.  The obscurity of the object makes it look like some sort of artifact that has been found and by how its levitating makes it look like it came form outer space making it look very mysterious.

Filippo Marinetti

Filippo Tommaso Emilio Marinetti was an Italian artist who was the founder of Futurism. Marinetti loved working very energized and can be seen in his artwork by the visible brushstrokes. Art was a way to take out all your anger and suffering and pour it out using art.  Marinetti loved created shock value through his brush strokes and abstraction as well as through words. One of Marinetti's main focuses was on art movement and trying to capture movement within his artworks and he managed to do so very successfully.

Juan Gris

José Victoriano González-Pérez was a Spanish painter who lived in France.  Juan Gris mainly worked in the art movement Cubism and could really connect to the work. Gris mainly used neutral colours in his artwork and didn't use a lot of colour except yellows and blues and the yellow contrasted very well with the blues. Gris mainly painted Still life and took a Cubism approach to his artworks making it look abstract and hard to tell what it is at first glance. Gris's work stands out to the viewer very well due to the way he frames the objects and reforms them almost looking like an science experiment, Gris analysed his objects very well by breaking them down and making it into a new structure.

Most of Gris's work always includes some sort of musical instrument in his art showing that he is very interested in music and has a passion in it.

Donald Judd

Donald Judd is an American sculpture and has a minimal approach to his artworks when viewing them but to him his work is a lot more complex than that.  Judd loved working with iron, steel, plastic, and Plexiglas.

Judd’s work looks quite simplistic at first glance but the more you look into the art piece you can see all the small details that went into it.  the main focus on the sculpture is the orange stained glass that has a remarkable reflection and the reelection being one of the main factors in this artwork

Looking at this image looks like the reflection of the glass is an object to help piece all of the individual artworks combined into one adding visual impact due to the effectiveness.

Bridget Riley

Bridget riley is an English optical art Painter.  Riley first became knowing for her black and white paintings, from painting from black and white she started to introduce greys into her artwork for a middle tone.  Riley loved to go on walks along the coast and search for caves, Riley also loved to look into the reflection in the water.

Riley has a very interesting approach to art, she considers perception as her medium.  Riley creates paintings with the composition looking abstract.  This artwork looks very minimal however differs from any other minimal artists.  Riley’s working is very striking due to using strictly black and white. 

Riley’s work is very interesting and it is almost like the viewer is Part of the artwork, as they get to decide what they see in the painting due to the abstraction to the artwork.  Everyone sees Riley’s work different due to their eye sight their height and their history of perception.  The longer you look at Riley’s artwork the more it starts to unfold.

Nathan Coley

‘Nathan Coley talks to Kirsty Wark at Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art’

  ‘Architecture and public spaces are the focus of much of Nathan Coley’s work, as he explores the way in which they reflect and influence people’s lives.’

Coley uses the cheapest material (carboard)  Coley had not seen his cardboard houses in over 10 years and looking back made him feel like a younger artist.  Coley took photo's of each building and changed the scales  of them.  Coley likes to think of his work as abstract, “Abstract of the world”  The buildings are symbols and markers of his own journey. Coley feels like he is like a product of his city (Glasgow)

Richard Deacon

Deacon is a contemporary Welsh artist and is known for taking an abstract approach on his drawings and sculptures. Deacon loves working with steel, wood, ceramic, vinyl, and foam.  Deacon loved making curvy shapes in most of his early work.

This Art piece is very successful due to the scale and form of the sculpture.  This Artwork reminds me of some sort of skeleton of a snake and by the use of the scale it makes you feel uneasy.  This also looks like something at a waterpark, like a water slide that has been rusted over and forgotten about giving this visual impact.

This artwork is very successful due to having leading lines and great use of framing.  Every section has a different shape to it making it visually pleasing to the viewer, also by looking at it, it looks like it is very heavy therefore making it stay in place and not easy to move about.

Buckminster Fuller

Richard Buckminster Fuller (1895-1983) was an American architect who dabbled in many different genres, he was a writer and had published over 30 books.  Fuller Invented many different structures. Fuller’s Daughter died in 1922 and around this time is when Fuller started to suffer from Depression and anxiety.  Fuller felt trapped and almost like one of his spheres.  Many people that Fuller knew tried helping him to get out of this dark place and years later he managed to get out of it by doing more as time went on.

 This art piece I found to be very interesting due to the form and if you would take a photo of this piece the lighting would be different each time therefore changing the artwork due to the light and shadows, almost like the light and shadows are the artwork. This artwork also looks very fragile and that it could easily fall apart making you feel quite tense.

I found this art piece to be very interesting due to how modern it looks. The colours orange and purple really contrast well with each other.  On the inside it feels it would be a lot warmer due to it having warm colours and almost feeling welcome.  Looking at the piece more and more makes it look like something alien and like a space artifact.

Vincent Willem Van Gogh

Vincent Willem Van Gogh '1853-90' was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painted who mainly focused on use oil paints.  Van Gogh used a lot of bold colours and dramatic brushstrokes making his art Impulsive and expressive.  Van Gogh mainly focused on painting Still life, Portraits and landscapes.  Van Gogh had a sense of empathy to his artworks. Van Gogh's work was seen as very Important and most people could connect to his artworks however he was unknown in his life time and never knew how incredible he actually was and had been dealing with mental health issues as well as poverty for many years, he committed suicide at just the age of 37. Van Gogh was bullied in his life time and was seen as a 'mad man' due to his delusions, he started to eat less and drink more at bars.  Van Gogh thought his artwork was worthless as he was told by many people that he was a failure. Van Gogh's Artwork  ’Vase with fifteen Sunflowers ' was sold for $75 million.
