SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WINDING PATH of fight after fight followed by a grace period that couldnāt quite justifyĀ why they kept in contact with the other theyāve tripped, stumbled, and fallen ungracefully into⦠this. this understanding where vera can talk of the MORNINGĀ and not have it mean their next meeting to discuss the circumstances of his latest arrest. itās what he wanted all along, isnāt it? griffith isnāt entirely sure, but to say no would make him feel like a liar. victory doesnāt usually come with crushing GUILT, does it? maybe there was never a chance to winĀ this game at all, and heās fallen victim to the only thing heāll ever admit is beyond his controlā FATE. even with vera only fucking lookingĀ at him, griffith knows that he never stood a chance. her soft-spoken question registers just as the taut muscles of his rotator cuff give a friendly twinge.Ā ā walkingĀ āround the parking lot looking for where it parked its car, actually, ā he says, trying to ease the line between her brows, but the determination has iced over her irises and despite her reservations, griffith knows that heās come to the right place.Ā ā iāll talk you through it, ā he promises, shifting his perch against the counter into a more forgiving position to brace for the oncoming discomfort. thereās a moment while he waits for her to find a steady position for her hands, and he looks up to catch her gaze.Ā ā you only hurt me when you steal all of the covers, ā he says with a half-grin, his attention quickly shifting to the task at hand.Ā ā so, youāre going to bend my arm at the elbow and then twist it outward, yeah ? if that doesnāt work, you can start to lift it up. and then if thatĀ doesnāt work, ā he pauses with a nod,Ā ā we amputate. sound good ? āĀ
IT IS AT LEAST REASSURING to know griffith is willing to walk her through the process behind placing him on some sort of road to recovery, even if vera remains apprehensive. she had all the capabilities to find success in the medical field, but absolutely not the stomach for it. the amputation comment is only a joke, but the thought alone immediately twists in her gut and sheās shaking her head. ā we wonāt be doing anything of the sort --- i draw the line at severed limbs. ā a pause.Ā ā and these are new floors. canāt have you bleeding all over them already. ā again, vera repositions her hands, bending his arm at the elbow as instructed. she doubts griffith will offer her any indication that heās in greater pain than before, but she finds her eyes flitting between his expression and his arm to ensure sheās not making everything worse. if anything, sheās hoping to make it a little more bearable.Ā ā you really should have seen a medic about this.. or someone with more expertise than me. ā the comment is mumbled under her breath as she begins twisting his arm. itās perhaps easier to do this without the additional commentary, but, under the right amount of stress, she is prone to either talking too much or not talking at all. tonight, it seems to be the former.Ā ā i mean, how are we to know that youāre not bleeding internally as we speak and youāll be dead by morning because --- is this the WORST of it or is there more? any head trauma? your ribs? ā she speaks and she twists, and griffith has yet to stop her. but before she can move onto the lifting, she has to ask,Ā ā iām.. still doing this right? ā
