Her  accusing gaze fixed on him. If he was running from something there was no  place for him to hide under that pointed look. Luckily, he wasn’t running any  more than he had been before the war.

A tear  slipped down her cheek. He stopped short of taking her in his arms and  kissing away the anger that marred her heart. As much as he hated seeing a  woman cry, Victoria needed to feel her pain freely before she would begin to  heal and live again.

He’d  thought the long arm of the war wouldn’t reach him in the mountains, yet here  it was staring him in the face. Guilty by association.

His life  here was peaceful and non-complicated—just the way he liked it. But that was  all about to change, he could feel it in his bones.
