♡ LUCY DAY — AUGUST 31, 1964 ♡

New York World’s Fair

On August 31, 1964, the New York World’s Fair celebrated Lucy Day, a special day dedicated to Lucille Ball.

Lucy arrived at the Fair to crowds of admirers, photographers, and Fair officials, spending the day touring the grounds, visiting exhibits and pavilions, and taking part in the festivities. She was driven through the Fair in a beautiful vintage car, waving to the crowds along the way, looking every bit the star she was.

I made this little edit to celebrate Lucy Day which is coming up soon on the 31st, using footage and imagery from her visit to the 1964 World’s Fair. I also included some color photographs I found from the day because I loved seeing these moments preserved in color.

There’s something so charming about seeing Lucy at the Fair like this, her bright green outfit, enormous blue hat, the crowds around her, and all the wonderfully futuristic excitement of 1964.

Lucy and Desi spoke once more in the final days before his death on December 2, 1986. As Lucie remembers, “I got on the phone with my mother and said, ‘He is barely speaking. He didn’t eat any of the dinner we fixed. He hasn’t eaten in three days. I don’t even know if he’ll understand what you’re saying, but I’ll put the phone up to his ear.’ She said, ‘Oh, okay.’ She was always trying to be so brave. You could hear her voice cracking. I put the phone up to dad’s ear in the bed. And he gave me a look that said, ‘Who is it?’ And I said, ‘It’s the redhead.’ He just listened, and I heard what she said. She just said the same thing over and over again. It was muffled, but you could clearly make out it was the same thing over and over again.

It was, ‘I love you. I love you. Desi, I love you.’ You could even hear the intonations of the voice change, how she meant each one, the interpretation. And I just sat there, trying not to show him I was listening, because I had to hold the phone. I couldn’t get out of the room. He couldn’t hold the phone. And he said, ‘I love you, too, honey. Good luck with your show.’ I had told him in passing, ‘Mom’s going to be on a variety show tonight, she’s going to give somebody an award.’ I’m sure he didn’t realize what show it was, it was just important for him to say that. I couldn’t say anything to her. I just said, ‘I’ll talk to you later.’ And I hung up the phone. Really, my mother was the last person he talked to, because he died about forty-eight hours later.

“Until I went back to my little diary”, concludes Lucie, “I never put it together that the date this happened was November 30 - the same date as their wedding anniversary.”

This distinctive hand mirror with its curved handle was first seen in the hands of Lucille Ball in the 1942 RKO film 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒊𝒈 𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒕.   More than a decade later, an identical mirror appeared in 𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒐 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒓𝒚 𝒂 𝑴𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒆, released by Twentieth Century Fox in 1953, this time held by Marilyn Monroe and Lauren Bacall.   Is it the same prop? It’s certainly the same make, but is it the exact same piece?   Under the old Hollywood studio system, props typically stayed in-house. But RKO, known for its lower-budget B pictures did sometimes rent pieces. That may explain how this mirror crossed studio lines.   What do you think—coincidence, or no? Let us know in the comments. before I Love Lucy… there was Georgina Allerton. ♡

In 1947, Lucille Ball took to the stage in Dream Girl, an Elmer Rice comedy about a young woman whose ordinary life keeps getting swept away by her elaborate daydreams and fantasies.

and honestly… who could have played her better than Lucy?

The role gave Ball a chance to lean completely into the kind of physical comedy, imagination, and larger-than-life personality that would eventually make her one of television's biggest stars. She toured with the production from June 1947 to January 1948, performing live for audiences across the country. ✧

What makes Dream Girl so fascinating now is that it feels almost like a lost chapter of Lucy's career. It wasn't a television series or a movie, it was live theater. There isn't a complete production sitting around for us to watch today, which makes the photographs and surviving records feel like tiny windows into a performance most of us can never actually see. ♡
