4 BCE - Emperor Ai of Han China fell in love with a minor official, a man named Dong Xian, and bestowed upon him great political power and a magnificent palace. Legend has it that one day, while the two men were sleeping in the same bed, the Emperoror was roused from his slumber by pressing business. Dong Xian had fallen asleep across the Emperorās robe, but rather than awaken his peaceful lover, the Emperor cut his robe free at the sleeve. Thus, āthe passion of the cut sleeveā became a euphemism for same-sex love in China.

sure, when my grandfather fought nazis and fascism he was āa heroā and āon the right side of historyā but when i do it im āway too sensitiveā and āno better than they areā
Thatās because when our white grandparents fought Nazis, it was for fear of them taking power away from other white people.
White Europeans and Americans were explicitly fine with genocide and the ideologies that led to it ā a great many people, including Churchill, vocally supported most of what the Nazis were doing. Their only fight with Nazis was to maintain sovereignty from takeover.
Todayās Nazi-fighters usually have a problem with white supremacy and the antisemitism and racism etc behind it ā which most of our white grandparents didnāt see a problem with and neither do many white people today.
This is why so many people donāt see any reason to stop the Nazis now, or why many others think itās purely a struggle for Democrats or other neoliberal parties in other countries who might lose political power if they gain traction. Many people donāt see Nazis as a real problem unless they threaten the political power of other white people.
White supremacist organizations and movements have been a life-threatening scourge for people of colour and Jewish people this entire time. Itās really important that we focus on that as the real threat, or we risk having the same myopic perspective as generations past.
When I came out some years ago, my parents publicly disowned me and disinherited me from the ancestral property, writes Manvendra Gohil.
āI am in the process of developing the first-of-its-kind LGBTQA (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans Queer Allies) Community Centre in India, which will be located in the royal establishment of Hanumanteshwar in Gujarat state.
This 15-acre estate, situated on the banks of the holy river Narmada, was developed by my great-grandfather and the last ruler of Rajpipla princely state, Maharaja Vijay Singhji in 1927.
My great-grandfather built a beautiful palace on the royal establishment of Hanumanteshwar, similar to the architecture of the Windsor Castle. He even imported weeping willow trees from the UK, and planted them on the banks of the Narmada, giving it the appearance of Windsor Castle on the river Thames. Unfortunately, the palace was destroyed and damaged by floods from the river.
Iām in the process of restoring some portions of the palace; Iām also adding new structures to the old building. This property was gifted by my father after I came out openly as a gay person. He even laid the foundation stone by performing a ritual for the LGBTQA Community Centre renovation and extension. The priest of the centuries-old Hanuman temple in the neighbourhood was also present for the ceremony.
The thought of developing this resource centre for the LGBTQA community came to my mind after I went through discrimination myself, when I came out. My parents publicly disowned me from the royal family and disinherited me from the ancestral property. But later, they resolved the matter and I got this royal establishment as a compromise.ā
