so i think my favorite thing about desi winning is how she ran her entire race trying to help out other runners. she was feeling gross at the start line and thought she was going to have to drop out, so she did everything she could to help the other american women run long and strong, whether it was helping break the wind for shalene or encouraging molly huddle up heartbreak hill and then all of a sudden she realized that she was in fourth and damn if she wasn’t going to finish
this article from the boston globe captures it so beautifully, but the reason why 7/10 top finishers were american women was because des worked so hard to support the other ladies out there on the course and showed tremendous sportsmanship the entire time.
and that, to me, is one of the most amazing things about the sport - the way that runners support other runners
