This is definitely something I have seen while researching fast food. It is easier to market to children especially because children are getting access to technology at younger and younger ages.
Flatbread Subway Sandwiches Are Not A Healthier Option
There is a lot of media buzz going around about flatbread sandwiches at Subway. The fact is that the Sandwiches made on flatbread are actually not as healthy as the regular italian style white bread. A study was conducted and shows that, compared to the italian style white bread, a sandwich made on flatbread has 10% more calories and 5 grams more fat. Although 10% more calories is only 220 total calories (compared to 200 calories for the italian bread). This isn't necessarily abad thing, but with all of these fad diets on point systems as well as calorie counting, 5 grams of fat can be an issue. McDonalds Sues a Town for Rejecting Their Restaurant
There is a town in Australia that is actually being sued by McDonalds for signing a petition keeping the popular fast food chain out of their city. For roughly two years the company has been trying to break ground in the city of roughly 100,000 people, but their efforts have been futile mainly to the credit of a protest movement by a group called BurgerOff. The group has claimed that the fast food chain is trying to build a 24-hour drive through close to an elementary school for the specific purpose of marketing to children.
The group BurgerOff has even taken the issue to the next level. Leaders of the protest group has flown to Chicago, where McDonalds corporate headquarters is located, and handed signed petitions, letters of anger, and protested in front of the headquarters. There was even an instance where the protesters brought inflatable kangaroos to a restaurant to raise awareness.
The fast food chain still plans to move forward with the plans to build a restaurant. Even despite being handed a petitions that was over 7,000 pages long. The fast food company then filed a lawsuit to keep protestors away from the plot of land they are building the restaurant on and going so far as to say that "the lawsuit is there to protect them".

A lot of the studies that I have came across have at least touched on the fact that companies are marketing to children. I like to think back to when I was a kid and if i saw something on Tv and they made it look cool i had to have it. I guess it is the same concept as "Cool Jo Camel" on the cigarette commercials.
Rich Countries Spend More On Fast Food
This article describes the relationship between 26 wealthy countries and the amount of fast food.
The study shows that wealthy countries with little to no restrictions on fast food have higher obesity rates than countries with regulations. The United States has a fast food density of 7.52 restaurants per 100,000 people. That is the highest in the world, followed by Canada at 7.43. The obesity rates for women in the US were reported at 31.3% for women and 33.2% for men. Even though Canada is almost equal to the US for fast food density their obesity rates are nearly 10% lower.
At the other end of the spectrum Japan has a fast food density of 0.13 restaurants per 100,000 people and an obesity rates of 2.9% for women and 3.3% for men.
Although this study only uses one fast food restaurant to measure density, it is amazing to think that this is only one restaurant. How often have you seen two,three,or even four fast food restaurants next to each other. Part of this is due to the disposable income for Americans. With laws benefiting these restaurants and excess money makes for a potent combination. Other countries also have less disposable income because of tax differences. There are many things that contribute to obesity and not everything can be blamed on genetics.

DON'T GUESS HOW MUCH YOU ARE EATING
In this cross-sectional study the researchers show that the general population guess the amount of calories that they are eating at a fast food chain and their guesses are grossly underestimated.
In a study including 4 large cities on the east coast observes 1877 adults and 330 young school aged children visiting 89 different fast food restaurants during evening meal time. The study also follows 1178 high school students during the lunch hour at the same restaurants.
The study showed that of all the participants the mean caloric count of the fast food meal was 836 for adults, 756 for high schoolers, and 733 for young school aged children. The mean calorie estimate for adults was 175 calories lower, for high schoolers it was 259 calories lower, and for young school aged children it was 175 calories lower.
The average American is underestimating the total caloric intake of a fast-food meal. This could possibly be due to the ease of access to ingredient lists and also food labels. Fast food restaurants are notorious for making it difficult to find what they are creating their meals with. The other thing is that the average person isn't taking a into account all of the little things that go into a meal, like a buttered bun or condiments. Also the general understanding of how many calories from fat is an issue because fat is 9kcal/gram and fast food is high in saturated fats.
Overall the message is don't guess the calories that are in your meal. Look for the information, because it may help you second guess your meal choice.

Effects of Fast Food on Obesity
This article studies the relationship between fast food restaurants and their geographic location and their effect on that certain area.
The interesting thing that I read was the obesity rates of 9th graders and their geographic location relative to a fast food chain. The study showed that if there was a fast food restaurant within .1 mile than that area obesity was 5.2% higher. If that same fast food location was .25 miles away the study found no correlation with obesity rates. That can be contributed to the time the students had for and the distance the students had to cover didn't allow for time to make the trip to that fast food restaurant.
Another problem that the article addressed is that pregnant women had an increase of weight gain of about 2.5% if they were within a half of a mile of a fast food restaurant. Which could result in a weight gain of a pregnant woman of 44 (total) pounds. Which for most pregnant women is 9 pounds more that recommended (for underweight and normal weight women).
The article also dives into the discussion of recognizability of fast food on children. The article explains that children between 3-5 were two identical meals. One of the meals was on a plate and the other meal was put in McDonalds packaging. To nobody's surprise the children (overwhelmingly) took the meal with the McDonalds logo.
This study was very interesting and i recommend you take a few minutes to look at it. After reading it I did a little self evaluation and realized that even in moderation this type of food is dangerous. and I'm going to try to stop eating it all together, because when it comes to fast food restaurants the only healthy option is to not eat it.
