“immigration is essential to economic prosperity.” I really enjoyed President Bill Clinton’s speech. It’s interesting hearing a former president talk vs. one who is either currently in office or on the campaign trail. It makes for much more honest and real commentary. President Clinton talked extensively about the outreach his foundation is doing in Haiti as well as recent world events (uprising in the middle east, economic failure in Greece) but I found his perspective on immigration particularly fascinating. He advocated for boarders to remain as open as possible and stated that immigration is essential in helping to balance the wealth of the world. A few highlights from his speech: Ordinary people have more power to change the world than ever before. As an example he cited that the vast number of donations that came in for relief in Haiti after the earthquake were in the form of small sums around $20. The communicators (the audience in the room) will have a profound influence on the next 20 years. Here he cited the uprisings in the middle east and how those events were depicted to the rest of the world. The richer the country the lower the birth rate. If youre concerned with overpopulation put all the girls in school and give them equal access to birth control. Good morning, most beautiful commute in the world. I will miss you next week when in the L line in Brooklyn!
"Truths vs Lies- you decide!" @ McCann's Rendez Vous is starting! Em
I just came from one of my favorite talks of the festival so far: Ogilvy’s inspire session with Alain de Botton.
Something I’ve tried to focus on with AIGA recently is to widen the scope of who we consider to speak at our events. Designers talking to other designers about design is not enough. It was really refreshing to hear an outsider’s take on advertising. Here are a few of my favorite moments from his talk.
The three things that lead to happiness are: 1.) friends 2.) freedom 3.) capacity to reflect on our anxieties (therapy)
Many advertisements today focus on selling things that fall with in the base of human necessities (food, shelter etc.) because those are the clients who can afford advertising. Yet these things often do not make us really happy, they sell us a promise but are often times not the solution to our unhappiness.
Alain believes we are at the dawn of capitalism and looks forward to a century where advertising can sell things closer to the three things mentioned above.
The most successful advertiser last year was the catholic church with $97 billion in donations.
He discussed Nietzsche’s philosophy on suffering leading to the most creative work. Nietzsche did not like alcohol and Christianity because he felt it removed the suffering too quickly.
You can’t be successful at everything. Anything with fighting for unbalances the rest of your life (being a good parent, having a successful career etc.) we should rather work towards a vision of success that actually suits us as individuals.

Well well well. The line for Bill Clinton starts on the stairs of the Palais (on the background of the picture), goes through the entire park in front of it and ends on the beach... It will be tough to get in.
Ok big event tonight: President Bill Clinton is in Cannes to speak on the seminar: "how advertising can build a better world". As every delegates I received this morning an email from Cannes to explain the special organization due to that event: it will be tough to get in! but Ellie and I will do our best! #EricEverywhere
