It is time!
itâs a shame brian being a traitor was barely focused on. like heâs not a major character but thatâs a major reveal and itâs like⌠ignored
Need 2 know what the hell went down at training camp with brian because the villain reveal was insane. But dale being a drunken absent father who only changed for the better because the near loss of his daughter years after he sent his son away to become a child soldier probably bred all sorts of issues. aphmau was also the one who set up his parents. perfect pickings for zane and all his scheming. hmmmm
my thoughts and prayers about brian
i think he found family and home in the enemies of Pheonix Drop when he was sent away.
if weâre following the medivial knight training process, he was sent away at 7 years old to become a page and start his training as a guard, and came back when he was 21 and knighted. its mentioned multiple times that dale is a drunk, and that he sent Brian away as soon as he was old enough to start training to become a knight. I doubt Brian saw this as a loving act from his father who was excited to share a passion of his with his son, but rather as a way to get Brian off his and mollys hands so Dale could continue to indulge in drinking.
When Brian does come back, im sure he is happy to be back to the place where he was born and grew up in for a handful of years, but by the time he is home Molly and Dale have had another kid, Alexis, who Dale is consistently there for and quits drinking for, especially after the whole shadow knight incident. Alexis has the father Brian never had, which i think ultimately makes Brian feel bitter and discarded, thus turning to the friends and family he had made in his time at the guard academy, which ultimately ended in his betrayal.
its also mentioned by Donna that Molly told her that Brian came back different, that âher baby boy wasent the same when he came back than when he went awayâ and i think thats bc of two reasons, one, brian most likely grew up. he isnt a kid anymore, he isnt a baby. hes at least a teenager and at most a full grown adult by the time he came back. i think he also holds resentment towards his family, specifically his dad, and pheonix drop, that he keeps to himself with a tight lipped smile.
Minecraft diaries but Zenix is Garroth's adoptive son and Dale and Molly do a better job at being parents so Brian doesn't fall for any of Zane's manipulation. That's it.
I think it would be very funny if we got cuts to Zane trying to manipulate Brian and it is just not working. Zane underestimates how truly stubborn teenagers are and pays the price for it. Brian just comes up to Zenix and complains from time to time.
Brian: Your uncle weird asf.
Zenix who had to deal with Zane's antics first: Tell me about it! đ
Zenix still becomes a shadow knight but mostly for the cool powers, after he gets them he fucks off from the other shadow knights and doesn't say a thing about his new status to Garroth because he's a teenager with a bit of a hero complex thinking he can be some cool superhero.
Garroth: A shadow knight has been spotted lurking around the village creating fires, I want you to be on guard and be very careful.
Zenix who had been trying and failing to control his fire powers earlier: ....You got it Dad.
This is what my mind came up with after reminding myself that MCD exist and certain characters deserve better.
phoenix drop guard redesigns :)
Again with the re-watch and knowing Brian was the traitor hurts. Like he was so kind and his love and worry for his sister and the village ugh my heart
I wonder what happened to him like we never hear of him again after s1- obviously he ran away but where did he go? Especially after Zane was gone. How did Dale and Molly continue after knowing it was their child who betrayed them.
In my head, he was hurt and vulnerable being sent to guard school as soon as he was of age, and then jealous when Dale and Molly had Alexis but I don't know.
Wasn't Brian being the spy basically completely glossed over or am I remembering wrong? Is he EVER brought up again? Is it ever clear WHY he was the spy?
I vaguely remember someone saying something about him being an actual different person after going to guard school, like, they straight up replaced real Brian (aka Ryan) with bargain bin Brian (this is how Ive decided to interpret the name changes lol) and I can't remember if that was actual canon or just a theory
So the whole name swap thing is just a fun bit of fanon on Brian because his whole existence is headache inducing. When he leaves, he's just a kid, but comes back a fully grown adult, implying that 15 or so years passed within the span of like 30 episodes. Which is not how Jess wants time in her series to work so she just brings him back and never unpacks it ever.
Then he does get completely written off, and I mean completely. He raises the gate so O'Khasis and Scaleswind can barge in during the war against Phoenix Drop, but after that he's gone. Like gone gone. The only mention he gets is a passing one when his little sister Alexis mentions her family. But neither Molly, Dale, nor Brian get to make an on screen appearance, and we have no idea where any of them are as viewers.
So swap out the babies, write a weird contrivance for Brian, or just give Alexis a proper scene of angsting over the possibility that her brother was a bad person and her parents never told her. Nowhere to go but up.

in my rewrite, the guard academy is in oâkhasis. brian leaves for training at age 6. after nicole âdiesâ, zane doesnât believe it, so he ensures that the new guards are manipulated into people who will do whatever zane asks them to.
now, iâm not sure why zane targets phoenix drop or knows to make a random village boy a spy. my hypothesis is that garroth ran away to bright port after hearing about it from azura and then found phoenix drop after. zane somehow finds out he ran away to bright port since he knows garroth and azura were friends, but doesnât rat garroth out for whatever reason. maybe he has a goal.
when a young, phoenix drop guard with a resentment towards his father arrives in oâkhasis, zane sees his opportunity to have an insider looking at his brother. i think zane personally mentors brian and feeds his resentment of his parents and village.
The Phoenix Drop Guard boys!
Garroth: knows way too much about poisoning and faking your death and a concerning number of ways to sacrifice your own life instead of let the enemy keep you captive
Laurance: knows a frankly concerning amount about the pirate life for the previous head guard and possible heir to Lordship of a village and a few too many information-gathering methods
Dante: would literally rather die than betray someone's trust but keeps a whole lot of secrets for someone so loyal and also becomes a hardcore survivalist the minute he steps out into the wild as though always expecting to need to live on the run
Dale: dude loves his wife and kids and wants to be an accountant to spend more time with them
Brian: asks a weird number of questions about things he never did before he came back from the academy and turned out to be an actual double agent for one of his village's greatest enemies
Ok gang Iâm gonna talk my shit abt Brian bc itâs eating me alive
So timeline wise a lot of this is built of assumptions, so traditionally in medieval Europe knights begin training at as young as 7 so assumedly thatâs when Brian was sent to guarding academy in OâKhasis and going off the age given to him in rebirth weâll say heâs 16, so he spent roughly 8-9 years in OâKhasis for training (this is just speculation based on traditional medieval knight training but part of it is basically tending to nobility and basically what Iâm saying is Brian may have been assign to tend to Zane) and bc he was the traitor in the end itâs assumed he had a close relationship to Zane (whether they were âfriendsâ, he had to protect Zane, or he was scared of Zane, or some combination) so long story short all his formative years were spent training to lay down his life for whoever heâs protecting and probably being manipulated by Zane and likely the knowledge his father sent him here as soon as he could (not with malicious intent but still thatâll fuck up a kid)
And then he comes home and his father has fallen apart after the lords death, heâs drinking more and just generally being a fucking idiot and this is the man he likely idolized growing up (while he was home) bc he was a guard he was everything he was told he should want to be and now to see him like thatâŚ. Not great
Additionally itâs also implied that Dale was not as present as he couldâve been for the time Brian still lived with them growing up as Dale expresses this regret after the Alexis stuff
Now Alexis and Brian open up a whole new thing bc one: Brian sees that Dale is not exactly being a role model even now that they have a new daughter two: Alexis gets fucking turned into a shadow knight and then falls into a coma so everyone (rightfully so) is most concerned abt her three: Zane was once again in proximity to Brian so whatever that would make Brian the traitor was likely reminded to him and four: as this happens Dale reflects on how he parents and decides to become a better parent and he does once Alexis wakes up but as far as weâre aware never communicates this regret to Brian
So that likely breeds some resentment in Brian, now Dale is this attentive father to Alexis and completely resigned from being guard something that Brian would likely look down upon bc of his training and his father is now the opposite of what he knew him as, making is training feel worthless from the perspective of doing what his father wanted bc now his father isnât even that
Those emotions and anger and isolation is a perfect environment for Zane to swoop in and continue to turn Brian against his family and phoenix drop as a whole and he does bc brian betrays everyone
What really gets me is that the series doesnât treat any of this like this there is not even a conversation abt how Dale or Molly feel abt this bc theyâre not even there and then it 15 years later and Brian is never seen again and sure I know why, it was to cause distrust in aphmauâs close friends both in character and for the audience and Brian was a red herring for garrothâs betrayal as well so the audience would let their guard down itâs just⌠it completely disregards Brian as a character bc at the end of the day for this he wasnât he was a plot device used for a traitor, he doesnât get any clear motives, he doesnât get more attention beforehand, thereâs no build up, itâs not even explored what happened at the guarding academy that made him turn against the VILLAGE HE WAS BORN AND partly RAISED IN AND SWORN TO PROTECT AS A GUARD like that doesnât take nothing and weâll never truly know it bc he never appears again
TLDR: Brian was a 16 year old kid who was manipulated for 9 years and had a rough relationship with his father and Zane being there for the manipulation turned Brian against phoenix drop and Aphmau severely underutilized his tragedy and it was in the long run pretty inconsequential
@dilly-dahlia and @doot-doo-t expressed interest in all my mcd rambling so Iâm tagging yâall in this bc I started writing it earlier today and finished now
Brian my goat !! :3
