No matter how we shield ourselves from emotional distresses, the inevitable happens and we get wounded. Whether intentional or unintentional, an unseen wound leaves a much deeper scare on the walls of the heart than its outward counterpart. Pain emanating from the soul is not easily quieted and is an indicator that something is wrong. It is the Epicenter that houses the mind, will and emotions, and bears the stain of life’s struggles. Psalms 4:23 admonishes us to umpire or “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” This verse is easier said than done as the emotion is quite the “trouble maker”; it is never at peace until it stirs up the heart and forces the will to play its game. The tendency to run, hide, medicate and deny its presence is what most of us do, hence impeding the healing process and prolonging the distress.
I remember going to a single mom’s bible study all “put together” on a Saturday morning. I was just going through the motions, literally hiding behind a “cover girl” make-up mask. A wounded soul I was, covered with scars and scabs of old relationships and spiritually bound with daddy issues, feelings of abandonment and rejection One can only hide for so long under the guise of holiness until the Spirit of the Lord takes the cover of your mess.
Reluctantly, I participated in the worship and before long, I was “knock of my horse” in the midst of the singing. A force greater than myself had brought me to my knees weeping like a mother who had just lost her child. It was at that very moment that the Holy Spirit “pierce my heart” with the words of the song, “We fall down, we lay our crowns at the feet of Jesus”

That day, I knelt down at the throne of grace and felt the concentrated presence of God around me holding my heart. Years of toxic relationships had tipped the scale and it could not be restrained any longer in the midst of a Holy God. The playing field of my heart was leveled almost 11 years ago and my life has never been the same.
