AEGON TRACED THE EDGE of the training grounds , hands pressed neatly behind his back. lordlings and village heros , sell - swords and hedge knights , all labored in training for the upcoming tourney -- perhaps trying a little harder now that the king was in their presence. amused by the thought , aegon’s thoughts then flickered the legendary tourney’s of old -- the stuff of all the best songs , for certain -- but the politics fascinated the young king far more than the games themselves. after all, weren’t the inevitable factions which comprised the dance of the dragons named at a tourney ?
he paused , walking towards his former squire as he swung && slashed. drawing away from ceaseless thoughts of treachery , blacks and greens , and family against family , aegon spoke to the younger lord lannister. “ every gambler worth his salt has you for the favored winner of the joust, did you know ? ”

AEGON TARGARYEN DID NOT CONSIDER HIMSELF A SELFISH MAN , but it was his name day celebration after all , && he deserved a moment's respite just as one else. as queens , princes , merchant lords , nobles from great , ancestral houses && insignificant keeps alike milled about the great hall , drinking his wine & filling the air with boisterous conversation -- aegon had eyes only for his wife. catching her eye , he dipped his fingers to the tips of his collar ( an old remnant of their shared youth ; a signal of madilyn’s conjuring ) before slipping away to a secluded terrace. smokeberry vines snaked across the red stone arches , && aegon found himself lazily leaning against them : the picture of a lackadaisical prince he might have been were he not the first borne. when she finally did arrive , aegon took his wife -- his queen’s -- hands in his own. “ i know you certainly don’t need me to tell you this. ” his voice rose above the muffled din from inside the great hall. “ but you outshine them all. ”

persona wise she’s like a whole mess of emotions rolled into 1 not-girl, quick to anger and quicker to forgive, wildly loyal to her family, never grew out of her moody teenager phase, always looking for a rule to break but also! very kind hearted and like, i see jo as weirdly endearing?

aegon was raised with the sole idea that he would one day be king, and whether that is a blessing or a burden depends entirely on the hour
you know those jokes about being a kid and adults telling you that you have an old soul but in reality you’re just depressed?

has always been a little too dutiful, a little too studious and serious, even as a child
totally had an emo phase
like full on walk the former grounds of summerhall and contemplate the most maudlin vaguely pretentious kinda shit
or walking the halls of the red keep and staring at the dragon skulls for a little too long

he’s grown out of it for the most part
at some point he goes in his early twenties & studies at the citadel, and forges six links before being called back to the red keep by his father
saving room for plotting w madylin but! needless to say aegon is totally devoted to her and their children <3
he becomes king when he’s thirty years old, and the moment that the unornamented circlet of king aegon the third is placed on his forehead, it feels as though his whole life has been leading up to this
he’s spent his whole life training to be a good, strong-willed king, a protector of the innocent, a shield of his people. a king that he would be proud to serve.
and at first, he succeeds. the realm thrives under his rule.
but as he grows older, burdened by the responsibilities, aegon is growing more and more paranoid. he spends hours consulting ancient texts, reading the histories of old dragon kings and queens and trying to hatch dragons.
the realm is creeping closer and closer to chaos -- each region has it’s own unique problems and there are too few hours in the day to address them all. and just as he’s trying to grab hold of the realm, his traitorous sister and those false-hearted tyrells are scheming right in front of him
on his bad nights, plagued by a wretched mixture of restlessness and nightmares, he can feel his kingdom slipping away from him, like grains of sand slipping through his fingers.
also he’s definitely got a touch of that targaryen madness and no we aren’t addressing it!
What lives in me…lives in you….It’s still there. And you will be the one who gives it breath. You got away because it let you…because it needs you for later. And its still churning in the soil of this city. It’s beating in the hearts of your people. It will feed and it will be set free. We will all be set free.
