luke let his gaze travel back up, still avoiding eye contact as he watched him. he wasn’t sure what to say, what to do. it wasn’t something a simple im sorry would fix. he could always blame it on the break up, say how staying in the house he shared so many moments with a girl he thought he loved seemed impossible. that seemed like it would only worsen the situation. the hard edge in michael’s voice made him flinch, gaze falling to his wristbands again with a shake of his head. “thank you mikey” his voice was barely above a whisper, although he was grateful. the image of michael going into his bedroom and clearing up, changing the sheets. it warmed him in a way he couldn’t quite explain. “i mean, i just needed a place to crash…for a night. it’s not like i slept with them…just, slept in their bed and stuff.”
MAYBE it was the fact that Luke disappeared and made it seemed like it was less of a deal than it was. maybe it was the fact that Luke didn’t seem to understand that Michael obviously cared -- but it scared him. Michael has known Luke long enough to know that Luke needed his attention. but, Michael was starting to question whether or not Luke has known him long enough to realize that he didn’t w a n t to feel anything. And now that he has, every move he made was crucial in not fucking himself over. “ ... and stuff ” he scoffed. for someone who didn’t want to care, he seemed to care quite too much. honestly, he didn’t want to have this conversation. he didn’t want to know what Luke ended up doing away from home. some things between friends -- between roommates shouldn’t be shared. because that’s what they were, right? composing himself, he looked at Luke and forced sincerity in his voice. “ you look rough, mate. maybe you should go nap ”
