The 50s drive-up window joint is where all the kids and even adults want to go when they come around the Smith Center area, but who can blame them? The food is fast, fresh, and great! Come check out the noon special: hamburger, small fry and a medium drink for just $2. 25. You cannot beat that!
Hottest Spot in Town
If ever in the Smith Center area and you do not make a pit stop at the hottest spot in town, Jiffy Burger, you are missing out. Jiffy Burger is a local business located right on Highway 36 in Smith Center. Jiffy Burger is owned by one of the many VanderGiesens’ that reside in Smith Center, but that special someone who keeps the place up to beat, clean, and always delicious is Mary VanderGiesen. The business has a 50s and 60s decor and themed atmosphere that will bring you back into time. The food and ice cream is known all around North Central Kansas. It is a fun, enjoyable, cheap, and friendly restaurant to visit. It is exactly what you want from a small town burger joint! One of the things that Jiffy Burger prides themselves on is their service to their customers. Now, in our decade, that is hard to find in the food industry. The small town heard about all around the local rural communities is personable with their customers and takes the elderly community back to their earlier years. Jiffy Burger is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days of the week. It is a must needed craving to satisfy and you will not regret it.

Here it still stands, The Home on the Range Cabin. The tiny cabin lays on the bank of West Beaver Creek where the poem was penned in the yard of the home. In April of 2011, the cabin was in desperate need of restoration. In the first month of donations, over $25,000 was raised. The majority of that money came from a benefit concert at the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon Supper Club in Benton, Kansas, put on by Michael Martin Murphey.

Home on the Range Cabin
Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam,
Where the deer and the antelope play;
Where never is heard a discouraging word
And the sky is not clouded all day.
We all know and love these lyrics so well. The Home on the Range Cabin has made so much history and is one of the most seen Kansas artifact. The Home on the Range Cabin is located in Athol, Kansas, a small town in North Central Kansas on Highway 36.
In 1871, Dr. Brewster M. Higley wrote a poem about the tiny cabin where he lived in north central Kansas, close to the Nebraska State Line (Athol, Kansas). He called the poem My Western Home and did not think of it as anything special. Not until a neighbor found the poem and convinced Higley to share it with others.
The poem was first published in a December 1873 issue of the Smith County Pioneer with the title Oh, Give Me a Home Where the Buffalo Roam.
The Home on the Range Cabin is free and is on private property, but is open for all to see during the daylight. The cabin is kept unlocked and has a small exhibit inside, behind chicken wire. There is also a guest register and they sell a one sheet with the history of the cabin and the song for a quarter.

Everyone can enjoy the World's Largest Ball of Twine. Visitors stop at the Ball of Twine and are noticed by twine ball caretaker, Linda Clover. Clover is in charge of all the duties dealing with the World's Largest Ball of Twine. She opens up the trunk to her vehicle to see if the individuals want to be apart of history and add to the collection of twine.
World's Largest Ball of Twine
Next stop, is Cawker City, Kansas. Come visit the World's Largest Ball of Twine, one of the eight wonders of Kansas. If you mention the Ball of Twine, you may get a chuckle, but this is the real deal.
Frank Stoeber started the World's Largest Ball of Twine in 1953. In just four years the giant ball of twine weighed 5,000 pounds and stood 8 feet high. Stoeber gave the ball of twine to Cawker City, Kansas in 1961.
Many of the businesses on Cawker City's short main street have paintings containing the giant ball of twine in their windows. A twine stripe painted on the sidewalks leads from the World's Largest Ball of Twine to the pictures.
The twine ball weighs around 17,886 pounds and has a circumference of at least 40 feet. The Ball of Twine still continues to grow.
The residents of the community and visitors add each August a twine-a-thon is held and additional twine. Do not miss your chance to be part of one of the World's Largest Things. The event includes a horseshoe pitching contest, car show, food, and adding twine to the world's largest ball.

Two Kansas State University students explored the small town life and enjoyed visiting the Geographic Center of the United States.

Want to get away from the busy hustle and bustle of the city? Come to North Central Kansas for all your small town appreciation. Grab your family and friends to come to the Geographic Center of the United States in Lebanon, Kan.
A historical marker that is located within a small park at the intersection of AA ROAD and K-191, accessible by a turn-off from U.S. Route 281 approximately 1.74 miles northwest of the town center of Lebanon pinpoints the location for U.S. center.
The calculation was made in 1918 by the U.S. National Geodetic Survey has since been contested over questions regarding the model used to locate the center. Most analysts agree that the physical center would have to be within 20 or so miles of the landmark. The monument was erected in 1940, therefore, the parties have agreed to let it stand.
The Geographic Center of the United States is marked by a pylon and flag founded by the Army Corps of Engineers. The site has an old abandoned motel and sometimes used as a hunter’s lodge.
There may not be much to see, but if you are nearby you will not want to miss it. It is something that you will not see everyday.
