But Naruhodo isn’t looking at him. No, Naruhodo’s gaze is cast out across the river, like it’s trying to hold—grasp onto—the light. It fails. The light reflects. The light reflects off Naruhodo’s eyes, just skimming the shine of them, then skirts away—as though tempting Naruhodo to reach for it again, again, again. Naruhodo doesn’t. It must be frustrating, he thinks. Not that Naruhodo dares show it, of course. Still it’s moments like these—here, now—when he comes just shy of breaking. The words climb up his throat and press against his teeth: you remember. You know why. I’m here. I’m here. I’m here. And if his knee just so happened to twitch—if it just so happened to press against the soft fabric at Naruhodo’s leg; Naruhodo always wears black, always in mourning, always in mourning, for someone who could be here—
