Dorcas pulls a trash bag out from under the sink. There were bottles all over the counter and tables, and Marlene was searching her house for a broom to clean up the confetti and glitter that was strewn about the floor.
Some people were still only leaving the house, shoes in hand, but Dorcas was the only one of their friends still there to help clean up. Throughout the night, all their friends slowly disappear with their respective partners until it's just Dorcas and Marlene, dancing together.
And there's only so much Dorcas can take. Every time it's even remotely, they end up together. And every morning, Dorcas stays for Marlene.
"Thanks so much for helping me out, Cas," Marlene says as she returns from the depths of the laundry room, with a broom in hand.
Dorcas stands, watching as Marlene sweeps up debris from the floor. The gray bristles pass over a polariod, and the other girl bends down to pick it up.
It's a selfie of the two of them, drunk, noses pressed together. Marlene is laughing, looking at the camera, and Dorcas is staring at Marlene, love filling her eyes.
She puts it in the trash bag quickly as another girl walks through the door and presses a kiss to Marlene's lips, just as Dorcas had done last night.
"Hey babe, and Dorcas, how was the party? Sorry I missed it again, stupid tutoring."
Christmas Tree Farm - wolfstar microfic - 351 words
Sirius pulled into the driveway of James' family tree farm, the last in a long line of cars that ran up the entire wooden pathway to the big old house that sat in the center of the land. There was a giant wooden porch decked in Christmas lights and a big Christmas tree with tons of presents under it sitting on said porch.
Every one of his friends was dancing under the lights and the sparkly tinsel that Monty and Effie, James' parents, had thrown around over the whole area. They were all bundled up in their mittens and coats, scarves covering their necks and beanies pulled down over their ears, but even as Sirius was walking up, he knew everyone was grinning ear-to-freezing cold ear.
There was a huge jug of spiked warm cider that Sirius grabbed a glass of, waving to Marlene as she jumped around with Lily while their respective girlfriends watched while talking animatedly, before walking to where he knew Remus would be, cozied up in the big sofa on the porch.
And there he was, watching a fire glow, but taking little breaks to look around, hopefully for Sirius, every few seconds. Sirius gave himself a second to stare at his boyfriend, and God was he beautiful.
Remus' ears poked out from a white hat with a pom pom on top, and he had a fuzzy blue Christmas sweater underneath a black, slightly puffy coat which was underneath another coat, this time a brown bomber jacket. Remus was nothing if not very bundled up.
As Sirius was staring while standing in the middle of the large porch, Remus' eyes once again left the fire to search around the space, this time meeting Sirius' eyes, a grin lighting up both of their faces.
Remus got up, put the cup of cider he'd been holding down, and walked over to Sirius quickly. Sirius's grin only got wider.
Smirking, Remus pointed up, and Sirius' eyes followed his finger. Sirius was standing right underneath a mistletoe.
"Kiss me, then," Sirius said, smiling before Remus pulled him in for exactly that.
Christmas Must Be Something More - jegulus microfic - 311 words
James groaned as the lights flickered again, before finally going black. It had been happening for the past hour as the snowstorm raged around outside of the hotel that had been kind enough to let James and Regulus sit in their lobby to wait out the storm-which seemed like it would be a while.
They had been on a drive to Sirius and Remus' place, only an hour away, when they got the alert that there would be a huge snowstorm and that they needed to get off the roads immediately.
Regulus had called his brother to explain that the probably wouldn't be able to make it to their house in time for Christmas, but that they were fine, while James tried to find a spot to park and go inside.
The spot they landed on was a hotel that had a lobby already packed with about 15 other people, including some whole families, that were all inside taking shelter from the storm.
They had left all the presents in the car, so James and Regulus didn't know what to do, and so for a while they had just been sitting there, quietly talking and cuddling.
However, once the lights went out, all three children of a lady who was all on her own, driving to go meet her husband, started crying.
Regulus popped up instantly, running over to distract the kids. James watched as his husband pulled out a Rubix cube that Regulus kept in his bag at all times, something the eldest, who seemed to be five years old, wouldn't be able to choke on.
The lady smiled gratefully as James followed, and the two of them began playing with two of the kids as the lady rocked her infant.
Maybe Christmas wasn't about the presents, or even who you are with. Maybe the spirit of giving was enough.
Christmases When You Were Mine - (sad, unrequited... ??) rosekiller microfic - 187 words
(part 1, not necessary though)
It's been a year, and Evan really should move on, but he didn't know how he could. He didn't know how he could ever be happy around the holidays, not when he didn't have Barty with him anymore.
Not when for years, Barty had been his best friend. For years, Barty was his lifeline, and his one true love.
Now, ever since the Christmas when Evan messed everything up, they hadn't spoken. And every celebration Evan's family could think of paled in comparison to the idea of having the holidays back at school with Barty, again.
But Evan couldn't have Barty again. He would never have Barty again, because last year, Barty got him the most amazing gift he had ever been given. And Evan couldn't do it.
He couldn't keep pretending to not love Barty. He couldn't keep pretending that Barty didn't mean so much more to him than he could handle.
And he definitely couldn't handle Barty giving him a gift and note that said "I love you."
So Evan threw the gift out, and Barty left, and now Christmas will never be the same.
The only bit of Barty that he has left is the one "I love you" he ever got told. The one thing Evan wants most, even if it won't be in the way he wants it to.
Last Christmas - (sad, unrequited... ??) rosekiller microfic - 227 words
(part two, not necessary though)
Barty knew he needed to let go, but he didn't know how he could. He had been in love with his best friend for years, and last year was the first-and only-time he ever or would ever do something about it.
All he had done was give Evan a photo album, of photos Barty had taken either of Evan or of the two of them together. Barty had been so proud of it. He thought, finally, I'm showing Evan how I really see him-see us. He even put a little note in the back that said "I love you."
Barty didn't need Evan to think about the gift romantically. He just wanted Evan to know how much he cared for him, and it could've been a bonus if it had turned out Evan liked him too, but he didn't need it.
But clearly, Evan didn't think that way at all. Because the next day, December 26, Barty had found the whole photo album lying in Evan's trash bin.
If he had looked just a little closer, he would've seen teardrops on some of the photos. If he had looked just a little closer, he would've noticed that the "I love you" note had been taken out of the book.
But he hadn't. Barty left, crying, and so they hadn't spoken for a year. Not since that Christmas.
Regulus closed the picture book as he finished reading the final sentence of the story. The three goats all lived happily ever after, blah, blah, blah.
Regulus didn't care much for the picture books Harry liked, seeing as he thought the plots were always quite stupid, but in defense of this book, it was written for one-year old children, and his four-year old Harry (who had a slight obsession with the book), was not in that age range.
Still, Regulus loved reading to Harry every night before bed. He loved how every single time, no matter how many times Harry had heard the story, he still got incredibly happy at the end, when all the characters had their happily ever after.
He also loved how James always sat on the floor, simply watching them every night as Harry giggled in Regulus's lap. Regulus, of course, would not sit on the ground, he instead sat on the single armchair in the toddler's room.
Now, Regulus helped Harry off of his lap so James could help the little boy get ready for sleeping, and re-shelved the book on Harry's miniature bookshelf.
It was, for a moment, completely silent, and Regulus almost audibly breathed a sigh of relief as he heard Harry's giggles start up again as James tickled him while pulling off the toddler's socks.
Pandora pulled her beanie over her head, the final layer in the outfit that took her twenty minutes to put together. Her wife, Lily, always laughed at her ability to layer clothes to the point that even when the temperature was below freezing, she never needed to wear a coat.
Currently, Pandora had fleece-lined leggings, normal leggings, and skin-colored stockings on under a black skirt, as well as three layers of long-sleeves, two of them fleece-lined, under a blue Christmas sweater.
Pandora finally walked out of her and Lily's bedroom and out of their flat to where Lily and their three-year old daughter, Luna, were waiting for her to finish getting ready.
Luna was bundled up in a coat, hat, mittens, and snow boots, despite the fact that there was not even a bit of snow on the ground. Lily was not quite as covered as their daughter was, but she still had a coat and some gloves.
Her wife laughed at Pandora's outfit before smiling and gesturing for the three of them to begin their walk to the Santa meet-and-greet.
Pandora quickly found herself carrying Luna on her back, holding her up with one arm, while holding hands with Lily with her other hand. Luna giggled every time Pandora hoisted her up to keep the little girl from falling.
Christmas lights blinked on the front steps of the flats they walked by, and displays in store featured toys that Luna kept shouting "That's so cool!" at (after which Lily would sneakily write down what the toy was to remember it) and bookstores that the whole ground would pause to peer into before remembering where they were going.
Even if there wasn't snow on the ground, Pandora was still pretty happy with how her Christmas was going.
All of their friends had decided that this Christmas, someone should pretend to be Santa for all the friend group's toddlers. After a competition where they all went around and did their best Santa voice, Lily got voted to be the Santa. She looked excited, and so Pandora was proud of her.
At least, until Luna came up to Pandora, saying "We know that this 'Santa' isn't the real Santa, he's over in the North Pole! This is just Mommy," with Harry and Teddy in tow.
"Alright, alright, you caught us. But you know what we can do?" Pandora had said, getting an idea to keep them invested. She didn't want it to be a bust, since Lily was really looking forward to this. "Let's trick everyone else by shouting out a bunch of silly stuff!"
-------------
"I want one of those big fancy fur coats!" Luna shouts, the first of all the children to follow Pandora's request. Pandora has no clue where she learned that "big fancy fur coats" even existed, but it's a funny request nonetheless.
Lily looks startled for a second, blinking a few times but quickly recovering and replying (in her Santa voice, of course) "Of course, dearie, I'll try my hardest to find the perfect one."
Harry, clearly picking up that the "plan" had started, shouted out "A convertible," his toddler voice slurring the syllables a bit.
LIly, again, looks surprised, but laughs and says "I'll try my best, if you're sure that's what you want?" to which Harry nods seriously before Lily turns to her final child and says "Alright, anything for you, Teddy?"
The little boy considers it for a moment, held up in his father's arms, before finally shouting out "I wanna get married" and giggling at Lily's shocked expression.
'tis the damn season - jegulus microfic - 285 words
Regulus rested his head against the glass window, foggy from the cold air, and watched the school grounds begin to rush by outside the train.
James was somewhere on the train. Regulus knew he was, since Sirius had come to talk to Regulus while they were both boarding the train, and Sirius was going home with James, just like every holiday, at least for the past five years.
Five years ago, that's when James came walking up to Regulus' house in the middle of the holiday. He had taken the train from his house all on his own for an hour. (Regulus had heard him bragging about his bravery at school after that weekend.)
Regulus had sat in his window and watched James walk up to the front door. He had watched Sirius—since their parents were out, luckily—answer the door. He had watched the boys hug. He had heard Sirius yell "I love you, Regulus!" up the stairs to him. He had watched them both walk away.
Now, Regulus' biggest regret was not leaving with Sirius, when Sirius had asked him earlier that day, whispering to him as they walked to the dining room for dinner. He wished he had been braver then.
But now, his biggest dream was James making that same commute, alone on the train, to come get Regulus. Even if it was just for the weekend. Even if all he did was walk Regulus to a park, kiss him, and bring him back home.
All Regulus wanted was James to come and get him, and love him again. But Regulus wrecked that a year ago, when he said that he could never love James.
Regulus was never one to interrupt a fancy occasion. He had grown up in a toxic high-society household, he knew how to act at important event and this was definitely not that.
But he wasn't invited to the wedding. He knew it was her fault, and he knew James had tried to get him invited, but didn't want to risk getting in a fight.
So, Regulus sneaks into the back door of where James and his friends are getting ready. As he walks by the hallway where Lily and her bridesmaids, he can hear her yelling at someone.
He would never do that.
He walks by a window where he sees her whole nasty family dressed in ugly matching pastel outfits, and James' parents clearly struggling to get out of conversation with them.
James' parents love Andromeda, Nymphadora, and Sirius.
Before he even gets to James' room, he imagines a wedding to which he was invited. He imagines the priest asking for objections. He imagines standing up, shakily, but standing up nonetheless.
"Please, don't say yes. Run away with me. I can meet you at the back entrance, and we can leave," he would say.
He imagines being able to be certain that James wanted him instead, that, however awful it may be, James had had the courage to kiss him, to tell him he loved him, even if James stayed with her.
Too bad it's all just in his head. Regulus sighs and walks back out the way he came, slipping past Lily yelling once again.
Fifteen - (past + bad ending) jily microfic - 274 words
Lily still remembered taking a deep breath before walking through the doors on her very first day of high school. She had walked around quietly, trying not to get in anybody's way.
She remembered staring at all the senior boys, wishing one of them would wink at her or talk to her, in particular a messy-haired boy named James.
She sat next to a girl named Marlene, who soon became her best friend. Marlene and her would laugh at all the other girls, thinking that they were so much cooler than everyone around them. Most importantly, they would moon over James Potter and Sirius Black.
The first time James really did talk to Lily, all he said was "Do you wanna go get some ice cream after school?" He didn't wait for an answer. He knew she would say yes. Practically the whole school knew she was obsessed with him.
She didn't know how fast it was supposed to go. All she knew was that on her first date, he pulled up to the front of the school and gestured for her to come into the car with him, before driving them away to the ice cream place.
All she knew was that he kissed her, and it was amazing. All she knew was that James Potter told her he loved her that night, and almost every night from then until the end of the year.
And then he left, and all she knew was that she wasn't dating James Potter, that boy on the football team, any longer. She didn't know that she would do much more important things. She was only fifteen.
Remus met Sirius when Sirius was a freshman in college. Remus had gone to a cafe to study for his masters, and there he met a drop-dead-gorgeous waiter. The waiter kept talking to him, and at first Remus was annoyed, but as they interacted more, Remus found he didn't mind it quite so much.
Remus had had his heart broken one too many times in one too many ways the years before they met, and he was scared of falling for Sirius.
The night they got together, they were sitting with their feet dangling in the water, and Sirius had pulled his arm around Remus' shoulders, almost thoughtlessly. Remus had gasped a little and looked at Sirius, and then they were too close, and their noses were brushing together, and they were kissing.
They later agreed Sirius made the first move, but Remus started the kiss. Half and half.
Sirius was patient, and he didn't push when Remus wanted to explain to him why he was so careful, but he wasn't uninterested either. Just safe.
Sirius promised him he would never leave him once, when they were arguing in the middle of the night. It was stupid, Remus couldn't even remember why, but as Remus stomped out, crying, Sirius followed. He promised he wouldn't abandon Remus.
Sirius was absolutely exhausted. He was tired of forcing his laughter at old bigot's messed-up jokes, he was bored of faking smiles at all of his parent's business partners who he hated and who he knew hated him.
He was lonely, tired, and so, so, bored of all the insincerity and the falseness of everyone there. But then, he caught the eye of another man, about his age, tall and with just as bored a look on his face.
Suddenly, he wasn't so tired.
The man had beautiful amber eyes that sparkled as Sirius stared into them, a smirk playing on the strangers face, seeming to mean "Have we met yet?"
Sirius could only stare as the man walked over, still struck by his classic, old-money style beauty that everyone else in this gala seemed to think they could pull off, but no. Everyone else in this gala paled in comparison to this man.
Sirius quickly learned the man's name, Remus. Remus had a sharp tongue, and Sirius loved needing to counter all his quick remarks.
The whole night, all Sirius could think about was Remus. Did Remus have a boyfriend? Girlfriend? Did he even like men? Oh God, what if Remus didn't enjoy talking to Sirius?
Sirius got pulled away too soon, his parents insisting that "Blacks never stay the whole party," they had to keep up the pretense of being busy and important, even though everyone knew it was a facade.
And Sirius didn't get Remus' number, but he hoped, god, he hoped, that he would meet Remus again. That they had a whole story, a whole life, to go through, together.
Sirius had been trying to leave hints for Remus for months now, too scared to actually confess to Remus straight-up. He was pretty sure the other boy liked him back, but you could never be too certain, and Sirius definitely wanted to be certain.
Remus curled his fingers around a cold glass of wine in the Great Hall, tapping on the edge of the glass before moving his hand away to fiddle with the gold ring on his pointed finger, twisting and pulling it.
Sirius couldn't help but stare at those hands, but Remus must've felt his gaze because he slowly looked up to meet Sirius' eyes, giving a slight smirk.
Well, Sirius didn't think he could do it anymore. He needed to adopt a little more of the "fuck it, we ball" attitude, because he didn't think he could spend even a minute more staring at Remus and unable to kiss him.
Sirius licked his lips and let his eyes rake over Remus' hands, face, and sweater-clad body, before roughly standing up and announcing loudly "I've got to got to the bathroom."
"Okay, Pads, Jesus, the whole of Hogwarts doesn't need to know you're going to take a piss, now does it?" James said, laughing slightly before going back to talking to his cousin Marlene about Quidditch tryouts this weekend.
Sirius threw a final hot look at Remus before walking towards the entrance of the Great Hall, making sure to take a left, back up towards their common room, instead of the right he should've taken to go to the bathroom.
He knew Remus was watching him, and just like he'd hoped, Remus followed him, showing up a few minutes after Sirius arrived in the empty common room with a "I can't take this anymore, Sirius. Can I kiss you?"
And if Sirius was the slightly obnoxious boyfriend who couldn't stop kissing and touching his partner every two seconds, well, he knew at least Remus didn't mind.
I've had four different people tell me im intimidating, istg, STOP THAT I AM SOFT AND SILLY YALL I THINK I REG KINNED TOO CLOSE TO THE SUN (pun intended)
Regulus was fine, alone in his huge house. He wasn't lonely, he wasn't sad, he didn't need someone to hold.
But then James came up to him at a party a few weeks ago, introduced himself. James called Regulus "Baby," "Darling," and "Love," more times than he called Regulus by his name.
And Regulus liked it. They danced together, perfectly in sync, and everything felt better. Regulus was living, before he was just surviving.
Regulus had been on plenty of set-ups by his parents. First, with stupid girls who twirled their hair and didn't say anything interesting, who were taught to just look pretty and the boys would like them.
Then, when Regulus came out as gay as well as trans (which he had told them about a few years prior), the set-up pool decreased, but it was still there. The only reason he had any confidence to come out to his parents as anything was because they couldn't throw him out like they did his brother. They didn't have a choice, Regulus was the heir.
The boys he tried to get set up with were not interesting as well, but mostly because they had been beaten down and beaten down, with no support system. Regulus had seen that happen to Sirius, and he tried to help them, but nobody had ever caught his eye, even a little bit.
That was, until James. James laughed a lot, he listened and asked important questions when Regulus was ranting to him while the rest of the city was asleep. He smiled at Regulus, he had interests and hobbies, and he enjoyed life.
Regulus had only been waiting for his person, and fuck, James was it.
