@me-tizi
Anne of Cleves was a tenacious woman and I wish we’d go back to portraying her as such
Most people don’t know (because it so often is never remarked upon in biographies) but Anne’s first reaction upon hearing of the dissolution of her marriage was to fight back ala Katherine of Aragon. She was reported to be very incensed at the news, she broke down, and then she is said to have declared that she was the King’s true legal wife, before retiring with her ladies for the night. It was only the next morning that she quietly and humbly consented to the King’s desires and agreed to the annulment.
This woman wasn’t well educated, but it is well attested too that she was highly intelligent (this woman learned English with such rapidity that men were remarking upon it in awe), and that her dignity, and sense of purpose more than made up for any lack of beauty she may have possessed. She immediately went about learning English culture and customs so that she could appeal to her people, and she succeeded (We know she was hugely popular with the people of England). She was keenly aware of her situation however, whatever Henry may do in public, and she even once complained to her ambassador about Katherine Howard.
Anne wasn’t this mild mannered or simple minded woman who let herself be led about easily, she was a proud, capable, and politically adept princess of Cleves who knew how to handle a very difficult and sensitive political situation that was thrown at her. But she was also generous and charitable and apparently a joy to serve, a real delight to all her met her and knew her, specially the women who would never stop praising her in their letters (Princess Mary it should be remembered, adored her).
I have to butt in here: contrary to how people regard her as the wife who was so relieved and happy to be rid of Henry, signs point to otherwise.
After Katheryn Howard’s execution, there were rumors stirring Henry might rekindle the marriage to Cleves. When this was revealed to be untrue, there were reports Anne was so upset she couldn’t get out of bed for days and even made unsavory comments about his choice of Catherine Parr, allegedly remarking that she wasn’t as attractive as herself.
After Parr’s demise, she went so far as to petition Edward VI’s council to be bequeathed the title and endowments of Dowager Queen. This request was refused.
We can’t know why she wanted to be queen, but she may well have believed that she was his wife, bound under God, just like KoA. Psychologically, I find it explains the info above, but people much prefer the interpretation that she took Henry’s annulment and ran.
On another note, she was also the first step-mother to show concern, interest, and outright adoration for the young Elizabeth I. While a supporter of Mary I’s, Jane Seymour did very little with or for Elizabeth, whether due to personal feelings, self-preservation, politics, etc. Anne was said to be absolutely delighted and instantly in love with the little Elizabeth; it may be fabrication or exaggeration, but Leti offers an anecdote where she remarked that she’d rather have her for a daughter than any crown. Their relationship remained until Anne’s own death.
It’s honestly a shame Anne’s tenure as queen wasn’t longer, although I think she had rather a colorful life in spite of it.
I 100 percent agree and I hate this common assumption of people (both historians and general Tudor enthusiasts) that Anne of Cleves was more than happy to accept the annulment and enjoyed her status as femme sole all the rest of her days…especially when their is evidence all over the place to suggest the exact opposite. First we have her initial reaction to the news, outrage and denial and it was only after a whole night with her ladies that she finally humbly accepted the annulment (its safe to say she got no sleep that night). But also we have reports of her randomly bursting into tears and sobbing hysterically long after the annulment proceedings. That doesn’t really sound like a happy independent woman. Then there was her reaction to Henry picking Catherine Parr over her for his next queen and the fact that unlike Katherine Howard, Anne of Cleves never made any attempt to make nice with Catherine Parr, which led to a rift between her and Henry.
And during the reign of Edward VI she wrote a letter to her brother saying that even after all this time she still felt like a stranger in England. She had to constantly fight with Edward’s council for her rights and income as well as her right to hear mass (similar to Mary’s own fight).
Anne of Cleves may have been well loved all throughout England and she may have adapted to English culture and taken to the English people, but she was still a discarded German princess stuck between a rock and a hard place trying to make the best of her situation. She didn’t have an easy life-as is often depicted in shows and mini series-after the annulment and it’s the fact that she could carry her head so high despite those circumstances, and that she could be so outspoken, brazen and courageous in such a precarious position as hers that makes me admire her so much.
And of course the fact that she was so loving and kind, especially towards women. She adored little Elizabeth, and she was a loving friend to Mary, she seems to have had some misgivings about Katherine Howard at first, but she quickly put them aside and showed her nothing but respect and even warmth during her tenure as queen. All the ladies who ever served her adored her and consistently noted in their letters to each other how gentle and easy to serve she was (in the beginning this was a great relief to the ladies as Jane Seymour had been a very strict and demanding mistress). The evidence of her conversation with some of her senior ladies (among them Jane Boleyn) about what sex entailed shows to her rather lax behavior towards her ladies, as they all apparently felt safe enough to speak so openly to her without being directly addressed and that she wasn’t incensed by it at all.
I just…..I really love Anne Of Cleves and I want her to get the recognition she deserves.
Have a sketch of Arthur and his baby sister Ellie @me-tizi
Here’s my half of the art trade that I’m doing with @lexartsstuff, she asked for Isabella being gay so I decided to make her gay in the presence of three Marys, Jane and @inquisitive-mess’s Ann.
The three Marys featured include @me-tizi’s Mary Tudor, @marygrey’s Mary Boleyn and @include-women-in-the-sequel-work’s Mary Stuart!

He can normally be found sorting said equipment or being sarky with @spooner7308 's EB. Cracking jokes thatll make your head roll right off your shoulders!
In @spooner7308 's monster au, he is a sasquatch, which is a distant cousin of the yeti.

Mary "Marie" Tudor, Queen of France
I felt like drawing my sixtended oc's in some different outfits so here's Marie. I'm going to do Meg in the next few days
+ Five facts about her
She's bisexual
She can play piano and guitar
She gets sick very easily
She's a dancer
She hates that she still has feelings for Charles Brandon (her past husband) but she just can't get over him
Elizabeth "Ellie" Tudor
I decided to make another one of the Tudor siblings because... I was bored. So here is Elizabeth "Ellie" Tudor.
She was the fourth child and second daughter of Herny VII and Elizabeth of York and she was the first of their children to die at the age of three. When she came back also as a three year old she got put into different foster families and orphanages. She remembered parts of her old life but because she was a small child she didn't really understand what happen which lead her never really getting along with the other kids and sometimes even to her getting bullied. The adults thought that her believing she was a princess and her parents were the king and the queen was her way to cope with being an orphan so she got sent to a child therapist which helped her a lot adjusting to her new life but also made her believe that her past life was in fact not real. Now she lives with one her siblings or grandmother (she basically gets past around between them) and knows that her past life wasn't just her imagination but still doesn't really understand it.
So, here’s my long procrastinated-on contribution to the Sixtended universe: Margaret Beaufort, grandmother of Henry VIII and arguably the most important person to the founding of the Tudor dynasty.
Historically, Margaret’s life was absolutely wild. She was married four times, the first happening when she was seven, and gave birth to Henry VII at age 13. She lived through the Wars of the Roses, carefully navigating the ever-changing political scene, trying to ensure a safe and prosperous life for herself and her precious son and, when the opportunity presented itself, she became his most dedicated supporter in his bid to become king. After Henry VII’s ascension, she essentially became the most powerful woman in England, advising her son on political matters and, more often than not, overshadowing the actual queen. She loved her grandchildren, playing an active role in their lives, and lived to see Henry VIII be crowned king and wed Catherine of Aragon before she died at the age of 66.
In the modern era, Margaret is a high-powered investor and businesswoman who, in her spare time, takes a particular interest in funding media about the Tudor era. She’s very invested in having the story of her family told and making sure their accomplishments do not fade from the public memory. She was the first person to provide financial backing to Six and is currently serving as the band/show’s executive producer. She enjoys life in the 21st century as she is free to act on her own and her ambitious, driven, and involved personality is not seen as inherently unbecoming of a woman. She spends most of her time away from work with her grandchildren and can always be counted on to show up to events that are important to her extended family.
