Tjarnargígur Crater - Iceland 2026
Tjarnargígur is one of around 130 craters formed during the powerful Skaftáreldar eruption of 1783–1784 in Iceland. It is part of Lakagígar, a spectacular 25-kilometre-long chain of craters created by the eruption. This striking linear formation is a reminder of the extraordinary volcanic forces that reshaped the this landscape.
Tjarnargígur is unique among the Lakagígar craters due to the pristine lake that fills its basin. On clear days, the crystal clear water has a stunning turquoise color, creating a striking contrast with the surrounding volcanic terrain and the green moss.
