He turned 80 last Monday. Instead of a memoir, he gave away more than 700 paintings — and put his own name on the country's first Chicano art museum.
You know the voice. Half of Cheech & Chong, the guy from a hundred movie posters, the one everybody quotes badly at parties. Cheech Marin was born in South Los Angeles on 13 July 1946, which made this past Monday his eightieth birthday.
He spent the day before it in Riverside, California, in a building that used to be the public library.
The doors were open and free to anyone who walked up. Aztec dancers worked the plaza. A Ballet Folklórico troupe took the floor in full skirts. There was live music, and there were families, and there was a 79-year-old man about to turn 80 standing in the middle of it watching people look at his paintings.
Because that is what the building is now. The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture opened its doors on 18 June 2022, four years and a month before that birthday party, and it holds the largest collection of Chicano art in the world. Over 700 works.
Most of them came out of his house.
For decades he bought canvases from Chicano artists nobody in the art establishment would take a meeting with. He hung them, stacked them, ran out of wall. Friends told him he had a museum's worth of art in a private home. They were right, and he knew it, and for years he couldn't find anybody willing to put a roof over it.
"It's the first one, and that means a lot to me," he said.
The first one. In the whole country. It took until 2022, and it took a comedian to do it.

I met this lovely couple on one of my walks in Mariehamn. We had a pleasant chat about the weather, the quality of this year's grazing, and whether the local humans had finally learned to keep a respectful distance. Delightful company.
