Emilia Clarke for Dior Magazine (Winter 2015)
The Show Must Go On / Dorcas and Marlene / Date TBD
Marlene rubbed her eyes, still heavy with sleep, and smiled, closing the door behind Dorcas. There was still some coffee left in the coffee maker, and her friend helped herself to some without asking, not that she needed to. Though Dorcas’s early energy was such that the blonde did wonder whether if it was healthy for the other woman to drink caffeine. Marlene, on the other side was awake at this hour only because she’d wanted to see the sunrise and enjoy the quiet stillness of the hours before everyone began their usual Saturday. But she normally went back to sleep or stayed in bed after that. Dorcas was lucky to have found her awake. She rolled her eyes and pouted. Typical Doe, showing up with some exciting news and refusing to reveal them right away. Stretching a moment like that was one of the worst things a person could do to Marlene McKinnon. When she wanted to know something she wanted to know it now. Dorcas was purposely playing with her precarious patience. “C’moooooon!” she pouted, stamping her little fit against the floor of her living room “You just showed up at nine in the morning, so you’ve better start talking right now, Meadows. Don’t make me hex you so that music comes out from a place that isn’t your mouth” Retrieving her own mug, Marlene motioned for the other witch to sit on the old couch, and she took a seat beside her, taking an anxious sip. She rolled her eyes while Dorcas made a big show of blowing the steam of hers before finally opening her mouth again. Vacations? Sure thing, it seemed like Dorcas couldn’t stop talking about taking some time off these days. Even in the radio, one could hear her going on about a holiday in some distant tropical island in between records. If Dorcas wanted a holiday that was fine, though perhaps now wasn’t exactly the most ideal time to casually leave England with all the attacks going on. The Order was needed more than ever. What she couldn’t understand was what Dorcas’s possible vacation plans had to do with her. “Pack my bags? Why? I’m not following…” she grabbed the envelope that was extended to her, scrunching her nose in confusion, and after glaring at Dorcas as if asking for permission, she opened the thing and extracted what looked like a pair of tickets. She read them curiously “What is-OH MY GOD!” There was a loud crash and her mug hit the floor, breaking into pieces as a dark brown coffee stain colored the rug. But Marlene didn’t pay attention to her lost coffee, jumping to her feet like an alarmed rabbit. She clasped a hand to her mouth and stared at Dorcas with wide, sparkling eyes. “DORCAS MEADOWES IS THIS WHAT I THINK IT IS!?”
Dorcas fell less than gracefully, careful not to spill a drop of caffeinated nectar on Marlene's couch, with her smirk firmly imprinted in her cheek. It wasn't unheard of for her to find pleasure in purposefully grinding the gears of any and every person she came in contact with, but lately she found herself putting a little extra effort in her ventures. Perhaps she simply knew what Marlene's number one pet peeve was. Perhaps it was more than that. As a child Dorcas grew up on an estate that more resembled a small village. There were servants and animals and an abundance of things to do, certainly. Her mother was more or less a stewardess, attending to each and every dilemma faced in a day, which left her small daughter with more time than rules to abide by. Even as a child, though, she was plagued with a serious case of the 'what ifs' each night before bed, and during the days she spent frolicking around, she developed habits to help cope with her inability to control everything. One of those mechanisms developed into trying to control everything else (such as the livestock, other workers, etc.) in her life. It was no real shock that now she was falling back into that child-like groove, but the only issue there was the lack of reprimand on the habit. She curled her feet under her bottom, a smile worthy of the most cunning alive curving her lips as Marlene reacted exactly the way she wanted. Sure, it was all in good fun. This was a time to be celebrating. A once in a lifetime opportunity all but fell in her lap, and she knew Marlene would enjoy and understand that more than any other. "Listen, I can't make this up. Some little tuft of a man wearing a periwinkle suit just waltzed into the station, alright? First he went on and on about how groovy it was to have a wizarding station play muggle rock-- obviously a man who had smoked many recreational cigars while listening to Dark Side of the Moon-- and hands me these." She paused to take another drink of her coffee, but don't let that blasé behavior mislead. Dorcas had her total meltdown on the way over, drawing multiple heads on the street as she, on more than one occasion, jumped to click her heels together. "It took everything in me not to scream it over the air about a hundred times, but I wanted to surprise you." She grinned, almost revealing her true inner feelings. "Tell me you're just as excited as I am." She leaned forward to help collect the broken cup, knees hitting the carpet as an expectant face looked up at the blonde. "I know there's a ton going on here, but we won't be gone more than two days. I could always ask Archie--" but she really didn't want to. He was an intern who hadn't quite grasped the concept of personal hygiene. Dorcas had estimated fault on the mother in the months she'd been forced to listen to him tell horror stories about still living with her, but that was up for debate. "Or you could pack your bloody bags, and we could hit the road."

Devils and Dust / Dorcas and Alastor / February 11, 1980
[ @head-auror-moody ] To say she was on her last leg when she waltzed into headquarters would be a vast understatement of the truth. Due to complications at the station and a spree of late night cleaning the night before, Dorcas’ already chaotic sleep schedule had been thrown off course (again), leaving her with approximately thirty-seven consecutive minutes of drool-worthy sleep. As of late she had been gorging on as much caffeine as possible, making her believe that bodies did not really need blood as long as a relatively equal substance was available to fill the void. Even with her ever-so-high levels of go-go juice, it took her a moment and a half to register what her former headmaster was saying (urging, really) when she attempted to fall to the couch, but when she did, high gear shifted in place and off she went. She had been tired before, but not like this. Her eyes burned. Her body ached. She couldn’t remember the last time she actually enjoyed a shower rather than going through the motions. Don’t even get her started on when the last time she had some adult company was. That would only end in a monologue worth of the grandest muggle soap opera. But personal qualms were just that– hers. At the end of the day, her life was lived for the cause. Pausing to reflect on how much she gave up did nothing but stress her already addled brain out more. Although she wasn’t a frequent flier at the Ministry, she remembered the way to the Auror floor from a trip she made back in school. The halls were quiet and eerie as she crept along the tile floors, wand precariously poised inside her cloak, for who knew what lurked beyond every twist or turn. By the time she made it to the end of the corridor, face-to-face with the foggy glass engraved with Alastor’s name, her heart was all but beating wildly out of her chest. Without pause or much preamble at all, she entered, hair and cloak whipping wildly around her shoulders and ankles as she closed the door behind her. At his look, she held up a hand, one vaguely similar to her mother’s when she was two shakes short of a lecture, and quickly began, “Dumbledore sent me. The Potters are in danger.” She pulled the blinds on the window, a paranoid habit of her own, and turned back to him expectantly. “The rest are already on the way–” she held the piece of paper she was given up for him to take. “Here. He told me to give you this.”
I feel strong. Not strong enough to face myself, but strong enough to keep going.

The Show Must Go On / Dorcas and Marlene / Date TBD
@cherrybomb-witch:
Marlene yawned with annoyance, wondering who in Merlin’s name could be knocking at her door so early on a Saturday morning. The only option she could conjure up at the moment was Zach, her neighbor and friend, probably to ask her if she wanted to go for a run, or something equally ridiculous for a Saturday morning. For that, she was more than prepared to shut the door in his face. The blonde took her time, calmly tip-toing around the kitchen as she prepared her usual morning coffee, humming a Pink Floyd son under her breath. She had this silly belief that coffee always tasted better when it was prepared the muggle way in the kitchen, not just with a few flicks of her wand. It gave her mug a special taste afterwards. A sensation of natural flavor that she was aware only existed inside her mind, but none the less, she found the little morning ritual therapeutic. Sometimes she liked to pretend she was just a muggle girl for a little while, unaware of the war raging the Magical World. Untouched by it. Blissfully oblivious Marlene leaned against the kitchen table, resting her elbows on the surface as she lifted the mug to her lips. She took a deep breath of that strong, bitter scent combined with warm cream, but just as she was about to take a sip, a new series of knocks assaulted her door, this time succeeded by a familiar voice…that was most certainly not Zach’s. Surprised Marlene hurried towards the door, mug in one hand as she reached for the knob with the other. For a moment, she hesitated, half-glancing over her shoulder. She’d left her wand in her bedroom. Nowadays it was dangerous to answer the door unarmed, especially for a law enforcement employee and order member, like her. The tone was undoubtedly Dorcas’s…but was it really her friend? “They could have taken her” she thought “And then prepared a polyjuice potion. It could be one of them”. She battled with herself. Despite knowing what was wise, Marlene desperately wanted to believe that things hadn’t gotten as bad as to being forced to doubt her own friends’ identity. She was becoming paranoid. But… In the end, her paranoia won the battle. Marlene told herself that it was just because she was still a bit jumpy after the whole abduction, which had occurred a little bit over a month ago. That was the only reason why she preferred to have her wand with her. She went to fetch it quickly, and opened the door, coffee in one hand and wand in the other. “Merlin’s socks, Doe. What are you doing here at nine in the morning!?” she greeted the woman at the other side of the door with a smile, immediately convinced this wasn’t some Death Eater impersonating her friend. No one could’ve possibly have embodied Dorcas’s natural excitement so well. She looked simply ecstatic. “What?” she asked with a growing smirk, infected instantly with the other’s enthusiasm “What did you get?”
To Dorcas, the day had started hours before. She couldn’t remember the last time she enjoyed sleeping in on the weekend, or any day for that matter. Seeing Marlene with her glorious bedhead struck a chord of envy inside her, which would usually prompt a remark on laziness, but today she could not, for the life of her, manage even one sarcastic quip. Dorcas simply smiled, reaching up to poke the blonde’s nose, before sliding in sideways between Marlene and the door frame. “I’m here at nine in the morning because I waited as long as I could.” Her grin grew with each word as she backed across the floor, waving the envelope in her hand in the air. “Besides, what better time to get the best news of your life than first thing in the morning?” It was natural for Dorcas to add a dramatic flair to any aspect of life, but when she was genuinely excited about something, her antics grew by a few notches. A chuckle fell out as she rounded the table, making a beeline for the pot that was giving off such a delicious aroma. “Mind if I?” But she was already pulling a cup from the cabinets and pouring it full before she fully finished the sentence. Making herself at home wasn’t an issue she ever had hardships with. Because she enjoyed drawing out the moment, Dorcas blew the steam off the top of her drink, savoring the sweet smell, before taking her first sip. Knowing that she was probably making Marlene crazy by waiting, she was smiling before she finished swallowing. “You know how I’ve been going on and on about needing a vacation?” Honestly, it was her favorite topic as of late. Between the station and the Order, she felt as if she had used up the last fumes of her energy. Dorcas was surprised none of her friends had begun referring to her as raccoon eyes as bad as her circles under her eyes had gotten. “Well, apparently my boss has actually been listening to me. There I was, in the middle of my late show, minding my own fantastic business, when he walks in,” she stepped around the table again, holding up the envelope for Marlene to see. “Holding this. Of course, here I was thinking I had finally made him mad enough to fire me.” How many ministry jokes can someone make on air before the axe falls, anyway? “But, boy-oh-boy was I wrong.” She stopped just short of Marlene again, smile now so wide it gave off the illusion of endless teeth. “All I need for you to do is pack your bags.” And with that, she held it out for Marlene to take.
The Show Must Go On / Dorcas and Marlene / Date TBD
[ @cherrybomb-witch ] Dorcas rapped her knuckles on the door to a tune playing somewhere deep in her mind. Her exuberance left her bouncing on her toes as she awaited the answer. She looked down at the envelope in her hand, knowing full and well the contents were a one and a million chance, and there was only one person she knew would appreciate the chance as much as she did. Marlene. For years she’d been running set lists by the blonde to play at the station. Hell, it was even Marlene who convinced Dorcas to stop being scared to play muggle music on the air. The world deserved to hear it, after all. Which was why she owed this opportunity to her friend. Somehow WNN was included in a country wide give away trying to promote more business for the band, which meant two backstage passes for a whole festival. One whole weekend sans war and violence and general Order business was right up Dorcas’ alley, and she knew Marlene would feel the same. Her excitement began to get the best of her. Another set of pointed knocks fell to the door, this time accompanied by, “Hell, it’s me, Marlene! Open up! You aren’t going to believe what I got today.”
❤: what my muse looks for in a person they like
She doesn’t usually go looking because romance is not high on her priority list, but what attracts her is simple. She finds those who have an eccentric trait or personality draw her in quicker. She isn’t picky between girls and guys, really. Her curiosity has to be sparked. It’s almost like she gets off on the learning more than the actual relationship.
✺: something my muse loves and never gets tired of
Bread. When she was small her mother was always baking fresh bread for the family she served, and Dorcas for all of the leftovers. She can usually be found hoarding a piece or two in pockets or tearing bits off as she rambles away or paces trying to solve a problem.
✈: where my muse would go if they could move anywhere
America. Probably California. She has an obsession with the beach as it is, but she loves the music that comes out of the states. If the war wasn’t raging and her guilt wouldn’t eat her alive for leaving, she would have left years ago.
♧: something my muse is really good at
Vanity charms. Dorcas has a fascination with making her hair crazy colors, so over the years she has grown very adept at wielding a wand to change her appearance. Also, as a bonus, she uses this skill to get back at people when violence isn’t called for.
☮: when my muse feels the most at ease
There’s a moment just before dawn, when the sky is constantly changing colors, when the stars are disappearing one by one, that Dorcas associates with hope. She can usually be found sitting with her legs crossed, a joint in her hand, staring steadfast at the horizon. It’s like the oncoming day chases her fears, anxiety, self loathing, back into the shadows. The drug infiltrates her senses, numbing the outside world, and for a moment, just one tiny moment, she feels nothing. That is when Dorcas feels most at ease.
