Clementine winces ever so slightly. “On the whole I think it's pretty good actually. Entertaining.” She's struggling to come up with more positive things to say. “It's just... it's pretty hard to get over the way they kinda butchered St. James, you know? That's my...” baby? Precious creation? “Most beloved character,” she settles on. “And it just sucks that people kept walking out of the theatre with a completely distorted view of who she is. It like, hurt my heart. Genuinely. I don't know if that sounds crazy or not but... yeah.”

ever  the  listener,  she  hums  knowingly  as  clementine  struggles  to  explain  her  gripes  with  the  movie.  she  doesn’t  interject  until  the  other’s  done.  “that  doesn’t  sound  crazy  at  all,”  haram  assures  her.  in  fact,  she  completely  understands  where  the  author’s  coming  from.  if  her  own  songs  were  butchered…?  well,  let’s  say  it’s  in  everyone’s  best  interest  that  she  continues  to  oversee  the  process  every  step  of  the  way.  “you’d  be  hard  pressed  to  find  any…  hmm,  creator  who  didn’t  have  a  connection  to  their  body  of  work.  and  detective  st.  james  is  practically  the  face  of  your  books…  could  you  imagine  if  someone  told  arthur  conan  doyle  that  sherlock  holmes  was  a  psychopath?”

haram  almost  doesn’t  believe  her  ears  —  is  she  getting  hit  on?  it’s  too  early  for  her  to  be  buzzed  enough  to  fully  entertain  the  likes  of  him  but  her  mood’s  good  enough  that  she  doesn’t  immediately  shut  him  down.  she  plasters  on  a  smile,  and  settles  on  playing  dumb.  “what  kind  of  ideas?  that  i  might  want  a  drink?”

chanel  appears  the  polar  opposite  to  zack  on  this  fine  morning,  ponytail  swinging  around  and  accidentally  hitting  their  manager  in  the  process  of  her  way  into  the  break  room.  the  sun  is  out,  summer  is  near,  and  she's  all  smiles!  “no,  no.  the  key  is  to  wake  up  a  few  minutes  early,  so  you  can  chug  a  cup  of  coffee while you get ready.  and  then  on  the  walk  to  work,  you  can  chug  an  energy  drink!  it's  maximum  efficiency,  zack!  there's  literally  zero  downsides  to  this  method.”  besides  to  her  beating  heart,  of  course.  “i  have  an  extra  can  in  my  tote  if  you  want  it.”

normally  he’d  be  as  chipper  as  chanel,  time  notwithstanding,  but  the  constant  early  morning  shifts  have  quite  literally  worn  him  down.  totally  just  that  and  not  the  hours  he  spent  scrolling  through  tiktok…  yeah.  zack’s  face  contorts  as  she  goes  on  to  explain  her  ‘method’,  almost  disgusted.  “ugh,  i’ll  pass  on  the  coffee.  that  sounds  gross.  never  really  got  over  my  first  sip  of  black  coffee,  i  don’t  know  how  you  guys  tolerate  it.”  forget  ambrosia,  it  might  as  well  be  poison  to  him.  but  ok,  the  energy  drink  part’s  not  so  bad.  he  perks  up  a  little,  his  palm  out  and  open  to  receive  the  can.  “yuuup,  that  i  can  deal  with,  thanks.  do  you  think  maybe  i  can  drink  like  three  cans  of  this  instead  of  the  coffee  and  energy  drink  combo?  maybe  throw  in  some  chocolate  too  while  i’m  at  it?”

minhyun’s place of choice today is le jardin café. his laptop sits opened in front of him, displaying the myriad of pictures he had spent the better part of the week taking. he’s planning to spend a good few hours here as he sorts through them, pick his favorites to display and add to his ever growing portfolio. maybe it’s because of his own tendencies to observe people does he feel someone’s eyes on him. or maybe she is simply being very obvious about it. either way, she’s turning to him. he does the same, giving her his full attention as he lowers the laptop screen just a bit. “maybe. what if i do?” his tone is light. he’s more so curious why she’s asking. it could be for multiple different reasons, based on his own previous experiences being asked this.

an  answer  that’s  neither  a  yes  nor  a  no?  might  as  well  have  not  answered  at  all,  which  brings  her  back  to  square  one.  but  maybe  that’s  her  fault  for  not  considering  the  fact  that  everyone’s  someone  in  azure.  “i  would’ve  asked  if  you  were  the  photographer,  hong  minhyun,”  she  decides  to  play  along  even  if  to  some  degree,  that  had  been  her  plan  of  action.  “then  confess  that  i’m  a  fan  of  your  work  if  you  happened  to  be  him,  but  it’s  fine  if  you  aren’t.”  consider  the  tongue-in-cheek  of  an  otherwise  earnest  response  haram’s  little  revenge,  who’s  still  somewhat  miffed  that  she  wasn’t  given  a  proper  answer.  at  this  point,  she’s  fairly  certain  she  isn’t  off  the  mark.

To think there'd be a day where one of her babies don't immediately descend on whatever's edible in front of them. And sometimes non-edible. She hasn't forgotten the pebble incident. “Didn't he try to peck your toe off the other day? There's no way he's suddenly smart. C'mon Pichard, here boy.” She tries her best to tempt Pichard into eating, but unlike his sister Pichelle, he's refusing to budge. “No way, you don't think Pichard's becoming a picky eater, do you? Ugh, I bet one of the guests did this. I bet they tossed out some caviar or whatever and it made Pichard's palate all boujee now.”

his  nose  scrunches  in  distaste.  that’s  not  at  all  how  it  went  down,  it  was  more  like…  “kissed,  you  mean.  pichard  kissed  my  toe,  thank  you  very  much!”  if  kissing  meant  having  to  get  his  toe  bandaged  after,  but  it’s  not  like  it’s  pichard’s  fault  he  was  born  with  a  pointy  beak.  zack’s  toes  wiggle  in  his  shoes  at  the  memory.  stupid  little  man.  huffing,  he  glances  contemplatively  at  the  assorted  mix  of  grains  and  seeds  still  in  his  palm.  “uh,  caviar?  what  if  my  man  just  wants  to  increase  his  protein  intake?”  he  flings  the  rest  of  it  to  the  feeding  flock,  rubbing  his  hands  together  to  get  rid  of  any  remaining  grains.  “bulk  up  for  summer!”

being  too  on  top  of  things  has  its  own  pitfalls  sometimes.  case  in  point:  the  situation  haram’s  currently  facing.  if  she  hadn’t  realised  her  cardigan  was  missing,  she  wouldn’t  have  marched  over  to  le  rivage  to  retrieve  it  from  her  brother’s  place,  then  she  certainly  didn’t  have  to  bump  into  samuel  gao.  of  all  people  too  —  the  world  seems  incomparably  tiny  in  moments  like  this.  what  is  he  doing  here?  without  even  realising  it,  the  tiniest  “oh”  slips  out  of  her  mouth  unbidden. huh.

it’s  been  so  long  since  they’ve  met  face-to-face  that  her  stomach  actually  turns  when  she  finally  sees  him  in  front  of  her.  haram  doesn’t  know  if  it’s  because  she’s  nervous  or  something  else  entirely  (like  frustration  maybe?)  but  she  knows  better  than  to  break  any  semblance  of  composure.  take  it  in  stride,  and  all  that.  “hi  samuel.” the words  come  out  a  little  bit  more  stilted  than  she’d  prefer,  though  maybe  her  increasingly  frantic  thoughts  are  to  blame.  haram  blinks.  “you  look  well,”  is  as  sincere  as  it  gets,  especially  when  you’re  comparing  the  real  thing  to  a  picture  on  a  phone.

making  up  for  it  (it  being  the  thing  swept  under  the  rug)  entails  a  weekly  dinner  date,  enforced  by  the  one  and  only  choi  haneul.  bit  measly,  considering  the  damage  done  but  haram’s  not  one  to  complain.  she  is,  however,  not  above  taking  full  advantage  of  whatever  guilt  he  might  be  feeling  to  eat  to  her  heart’s  content.  “you’ve  been  here  for  half  a  year,  what  do  you  recommend?”  she  passes  him  the  menu  she’s  been  hogging  for  the  past  few  minutes.  an  olive  branch  perhaps,  if  you  really  squint.

“early  morning  shifts  will  be  the  death  of  me,  i  can  feel  it  in  my  soul…”  he  groans  as  soon  as he sees it’s  chanel.  his  head  cradled  between  his  hands,  zack’s  usual  cheery  expression is  nowhere  to  be  found.  “i  don’t  understand  why  boss  likes  to  schedule  me  so  early.  do  you  think  it’s  a  ploy  to  siphon  away  my  youth?”

“well,  i  didn’t  know  you  wrote  the  movie  off  completely.”  in  all  honesty,  haram  hadn’t  even  watched  it  beyond  the  trailer.  too  busy  to  attend  the  premiere,  then  just  busy  enough  to  forget  she’d  wanted  to  watch  it  in  the  first  place;  diving  headfirst  into  juggling  multiple  projects.  “it’s  that  bad?”  sure,  she’s  read  some  comments  floating  around  but  it’s  different  hearing  it  from  the  original  author.

her  croissant  sits  on  the  plate  untouched,  still  as  pristine  as  it  was  when  she  bought  it.  the  same  croissant  she  had  every  intention  of  devouring  until  she  catches  sight  of  a  vaguely  familiar  face at the next table.  not  familiar  like  haram  knows  him  as  it  is  she  knows  of  him.  probably.  she  wants  to  figure  it  out  all  the  same,  not  really  fond  of  the  nagging  feeling  regret  brings.  her  attention  is  on  the  instagram  profile  she  pulled  up  minutes  ago,  brows  furrowing.  is  there  no  other  way  of  checking…?  leap  of  faith  it  is, then.  she  turns to him,  chair  creaking  in  kind  as  her  weight  shifts.  “do  you…  take  pictures,  by  any  chance?”

　　࿐　　thea  rolls  her  eyes,  hand  flying  up  to  playfully  swat  zack's  arm.  “  you  are  so  annoying!  ”  though  it's  hardly  a  sincere  complaint  when  she's  clearly  fighting  back  a  smile.  she  turns  back  to  the  subjects  at  hand,  hopes  they  didn't  overhear  the  brief  interaction,  but  they're  in  their  own  little  world  as  they  continue  their  little  gossip  session.  thea  hushes  zack  when  he  speaks  again,  hand  lifted  up  behind  her  to  get  him  to  be  quiet.  “  do  you  recognize  that  guy?  he  looks  like  someone  who  golfs.  i  think.  ”

at  her  signal,  his  mouth  purses  in  an  attempt  to  stay  silent.  he  glances  briefly  to  check,  then  makes  sure  he’s  using  his  inside  voice  this  time.  “him?  oh  yeah,  caddied  for  him  like  last  week.  maaajor  small  dick  energy.  i  tried  to  give  him  advice  because  he  looked  like  he  was  having  some  trouble  but  he  gave  me  the  stink  eye  and  said—”  here,  zack  tries  to  imitate  the  guy  from  memory.  “—‘i’ve  got  this’.  like,  hey  sorry  man,  just  trying  to  be  helpful.”  continuing  his  mini  reenactment,  his  hands  raise  in  mock  surrender  before  they  fall  to  his  sides.  he  pauses  thoughtfully,  gaze  flickering  back  to  the  guy.

“i  think  it’s  because  he  tried  to  impress  some  girl  he  brought  along.  and  get  this,  it  took  him  so  many  strokes  to  land  the  ball  in  every.  single.  hole.  like  if  this  was  golf  on  nintendo  switch  sports,  he  would’ve  kept  reaching  the  limit.  except  there  wasn’t  a  limit,  so  i  was  just  standing  around  waiting  for  him  to  finish.”  which  is  as  boring  as  it  sounds, by the way.  “why?  are  they  talking  about  how  bad  he  is  in  bed? i’d  totally  believe that  he’s  as  bad  at  it  as  he  is  at  golfing.”

the  downside  of  stealing  someone's  pet  is  that  their  owner  always  came  knocking.     she'd  had  to  hush  zack,  scared  her  roommate  would  wake  up  and  then  there'd  really  be  problems.  now,  though,  she  stands  imperious  and  refusing  to  admit  guilt,  arms  crossed  over  her  chest  as  she  sniffs,  lifts  her  chin  up.  “  maybe  you  just  remember  wrong.  you  know,  memory's  fickle  and  all  that.  ”  she'd  just  looked  up  fickle  in  the  dictionary  two  days  ago,  and  now  she  was  using  the  word.  someone  needed  to  get  her  a  nobel  prize  in  english  or  something.  “  and  maybe  she  can  open  doors.  she's  very  talented,  you  know.  ”  she  pauses.  her  gaze  sweeps  over  zack  and  for  a  moment  she  wonders  if  she  could  beat  him  in  a  brawl  for  the  lizard.  a  consideration  for  another  time.  “  i  think  you  should  let  her  stay  here  until  tomorrow,  since  it's  so  late.  ”

being  questioned  over  his  love  and  enduring  belief  that  elizabeth  the  third  must  be  the  smartest  pet  alive  inevitably  gets  him  riled  up.  his  tiredness  doesn’t  help  either.  “you  think  i  don’t  know  that?  of  course  she’s  talented,”  he  hisses,  understandably  irritated  that  evie  won’t  budge.  “i’ve  been  raising  her  for  like  10  years,  which  is  more  years  than  you.  and  no,  my  memory  is  not  ‘fickle’,  thank  you  very  much.”  whatever  the  hell  that  means,  but  zack  knows  when  he’s  being  insulted!  tonight  he  decides  to  finally  put  his  foot  down  —  and he’ll  stop  at  nothing  to  get  lizzy  back.  kind  of  like  liam  neeson  in  taken.  leveling  his  gaze,  he  scoffs  at  her,  “yeah,  you  wish.  do  you  even  have  a  proper  enclosure  for  her?”

"  it's  not  what  it  looks  like,  really  !  "  of  course,  it's  a  sight  to  see  nevertheless.  chanel  hunched  over,  a  mountain  of  paperbacks  up  to  her  neck  in  hand  with  no  bag  as  proof  of  purchase.  it's  about  saving  the  environment  though  !  her  hands  and  arms  work  just  as  well  as  some  flimsy  bag  could.  "  i  paid  for  all  of  these  ...  with  my  hard  earned  money.  "  and  the  generosity  of  a  guest  who'd  handed  a  wad  of  euros  over  and  told  her  a  day  prior  :  treat  yourself to something pretty,  chanel  !  jokes  on  him  though,  no  way  he'd  think  she  was  blowing  this  play  money  on  raunchy  romance  books  with  shirtless  men  on  the  cover.  the  same  embarrassing  covers  that  threatened  to  spill  out  of  her  hands  with  each  passing  moment.  "  you  wouldn't  ...  um,  be  able  to  give  me  hand  would  you  ?  they really rushed me out of there. "

“i  doubt  anyone  at  the  bookshop  would’ve  missed  the  sight  of  you  if  you’re  struggling  this  much  to  carry  it,”  she  remarks  dryly,  the  corner  of  her  mouth  quirking  up.  “you’d  make  for  a  horrible  thief.”  it  isn’t  really  that  hard  to  believe  in  chanel’s  innocence  when  she  still  looks  every  part  the  eager  girl  haram  remembers  her  to  be.  or  —  scratch  that,  maybe  a  little  more  grown  up  seeing  the  half-naked  man  on  the  cover  of  the  top-most  book.  she  reserves  any  judgement  for  later,  quick  to  take  a  few  of  them  off  her  hands.  corrects  herself  again  as  the  pile  on  her  right  arm  grows:  multiple  men  in  varying  states  of  undress, abs always in full view.  “what’s  the  occasion?  or  are  you  just  treating  yourself?”  it’s  not  the  most  ideal  reunion,  all  things  considered,  but  she’s  glad  to  see  a  familiar  face regardless.
